Homegrown Terror
Homegrown Terror: Benedict Arnold and the Burning of New London | Eric D. Lehman
9 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
On September 6, 1781, Connecticut native Benedict Arnold and a force of 1,600 British soldiers and loyalists took Fort Griswold and burnt New London to the ground. The brutality of the invasion galvanized the new nation, and Remember New London! would become a rallying cry for troops under General Lafayette. In Homegrown Terror, Eric D. Lehman chronicles the events leading up to the attack and highlights this key transformation in Arnoldthe point where he went from betraying his comrades to massacring his neighbors and destroying their homes. This defining incident forever marked him as a symbol of evil, turning an antiheroic story about weakness of character and missed opportunity into one about the nature of treachery itself. Homegrown Terror draws upon a variety of perspectives, from the traitor himself to his former comrades like Jonathan Trumbull and Silas Deane, to the murdered Colonel Ledyard. Rethinking Benedict Arnold through the lens of this terrible episode, Lehman sheds light on the ethics of the dawning nation, and the way colonial America responded to betrayal and terror.

Homegrown Terror, my pick for #BestofSeptember & #FavoritesofFall
Reading it was engrossing, intriguing & persuasive. A history particular to CT Revolutionary period. Author uses the lens of the Burning of New London & the Battle of Groton Heights, his hometown area, to reimagine/rename Benedict Arnold as a more of a terrorist rather than traitor.

All I want to do is sleep- no breeze as a saving grace, so when I try to read, I doze. Bird songs lull me as well. I finally got 3 little pumpkins yesterday, but does not feel fallish at all! ☀️☀️🐦

ValerieAndBooks This hot weather is making me sleepy too! I really don‘t want to turn on the ac in late September but I might have to for tonight! 7y
Lmstraubie I know what you mean. It's supposed to get cooler here by week's end 🤞🤞🤞 7y

No #chapter20 so this is #page20.
"Though his first home in eastern Connecticut was now a center of seditious activity, Arnold could hardly have picked a better city to find radical politics, full of Enlightenment hallmarks like newspapers, coffeehouses, and an educated population." (city was New Haven) Always ☕️☕️☕️☕️!!

#CTHistory #BenedictArnold #history
My pleasure reading has slowed down now that I am teaching, and also because I have been watching Vietnam on PBS each night since Sunday.
Only 30 pages into this but fascinating synopsis of CT people, places in colonial, pre revolutionary & Revolutionary history as related to Benedict Arnold. Enjoying learning about my state.

Beckys_Books My husband has been watching that, too. 7y

Had to return books to two different town libraries- so of course I picked up a few books. Restrained myself as I have HUGE TBR & two book club books to read this month. Just joined a new book club (offshoot of one I started with a friend & was in for 16 yrs, but left due to work/family obligations) this month so a little nervous about the obligation but excited to be in monthly discussions!

drokka I've heard good things about both those cozy series #ilovecozies. 7y
