This was an amazing read. It brought up some really important issues. I enjoyed reading it so much. It definitely had a lot of heart in it. I would strongly recommend reading this book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Three Pakistani-American teenagers, on a trip through the land of pork ribs, mechanical bulls, and Confederate flags. It‘s going to be quite an adventure.

The summer after her freshman year of college, Mariam is looking forward to working and hanging out with her best friends: irrepressible and beautiful Ghazala and religious but closeted Umar.

This is a story about a group of Pakistani-American teens who hit the road, headed from New Jersey to New Orleans. One is hiding from the fallout after she's featured on a Times Square billboard, one is looking for her absentee father, and one is deciding when and whether to come out.

A cute ya. Mariam is traveling with her friends, and all of them have something they are coming to terms with.

Something that I expected to be pretty light ended up being pretty the opposite. A cool roadtrip novel that goes into depth, and tackles a lot of racist bullshit, a lot of youth problems, but also sees a lot of that carefree stuff that is meant to come with roadtripping.

So it wasn‘t terrible. And there were some good points to it, although sometimes it felt a little “After School Special” in the race relations department. Sometimes it was too much information and at other times not enough. The main character just wasn‘t interesting enough to carry the focus. The other 2 were dealing with much larger issues that Mariam just faded in the background for me.

Ever read a book named after the main character, but it is the supporting characters that made the book interesting?

I really wanted to love this book a lot more than I did. I think the focus on friendship is excellent, but the characters didn't feel like real people and the narrative felt very superficial on a lot of levels, which is part of why the characters failed to feel like real people . There were good moments and it's worth a read, but it was not the strongest road trip narrative I've read.

Road trip read (plus Apple seltz). Er, the book is about a road trip. I'm drinking fizzy water at home reading it 😂
