Jane Austen: An Illustrated Treasury | Rebecca Dickson
8 posts | 1 read | 6 to read
Takes you inside the author's world - the hardships she faced, the loves she lost, and the keen sense of irony that kept her going. Fully illustrated with Regency-era artwork, the book also explains key aspects of life in Austen's time.

Stunningly beautiful book. Loved illustrations & memorabilia. Saved for #JaneAustenThenAndNow. 👍for Presentation. Keeping for that reason & because it was gift from a friend. But👎for commentary. I have THOUGHTS #PemberLittens!

Elizabeth Bennet was joking when she said she fell in love with Darcy on “my first seeing his beautiful grounds at Pemberley.”

My next comment has Spoilers for Mansfield Park. 👇

Crinoline_Laphroaig We may not completely ostracize a woman who leaves her husband and runs off with another man like Maria Rushworth but don't act like most people these days would think nothing of it. 2d
Crinoline_Laphroaig My BIGGEST complaint is
what author calls 'The Complicated Henry Tilney.'

"Northanger Abbey reads as a lighthearted novel, but Henry Tilney doesn't seem to fit, in part because he doesn't come across as lighthearted."

Northanger Abbey is close 2nd to Pride and Prejudice as my favorite Austen. And Henry Tilney is one of my favorite characters. Yes he
has some serious moments but for the most part he is a charming man with a sunny disposition.
2d
Crinoline_Laphroaig Author asks if Jane was in a bad mood when she wrote. Jane wrote Northanger Abbey as a very young woman and she was poking fun at Gothic Novels. So many people don't get that it's very tongue in cheek. 👇 2d

Crinoline_Laphroaig Enjoy it without trying to over analyze it. Sometimes the curtains are just blue or in this case Henry Tilney is just a lively young man who falls for a sweet young woman. End of Rant. 2d
TheBookHippie No. Not our Henry. No. 😭😩 We love him. 2d
Deblovestoread My niece, dad and I were discussing JA over Christmas and talking favorites and NA and Henry is her favorite just for the reasons you listed. 2d
Andrea313 Henry not lighthearted?! With a few exceptions, all the man does is poke lighthearted fun at everything and everyone. I have to admit, I'm curious to read the author's view even though I think I'd adamantly disagree. 2d
bookandbedandtea I don't know how anyone could read NA and come away thinking Henry "isn't lighthearted." 2d
Crinoline_Laphroaig @Andrea313 it's only few paragraphs long and it made me rant hard. 2d

There are a few scenes in Austen‘s works that involve the main character and #Conveyances , or I like to think of them as “ominous carriage rides.” In Northanger Abbey, Mr Thorpe is rather devious, and he and his sister practically kidnap Catherine and take her on a very awkward carriage ride (she begins to realize these people are not her friends by this time). ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Librarybelle While the tagged book does not explicitly describe the scene in question, it does explore themes in each of Austen‘s works (for instance, Mr. Thorpe‘s love for hunting and driving). Plus, there are objects in envelopes that readers can explore Austen‘s thoughts through letters. Another fun way to dive into Austen! #200PnPCovers 3y
mabell Oh I love books like this! (The Jolly Postman is one of my all time favorites) And I get mad just thinking about that carriage ride! 😆 3y
CrowCAH Looks like a fun book for any Austen enthusiast! 3y

I got this little treasure years ago and have loved it ever since. One of my book challenge categories is a re-telling and I‘m thinking of a re-telling if one of Austen‘s stories. Does anyone have recommendations?

Lindy An inspired retelling set in contemporary Brooklyn: 5y
Lindy Or, another contemporary P&P retelling, this one set in a Muslim community in Toronto: 5y
Lindy @sprainedbrain has just finished a month of Austen and she might have some good recs for you. 5y

sprainedbrain Not really a retelling (more of a continuation), but I recently finished this book and enjoyed it. 5y
sprainedbrain Oh and I also liked this... again, not really a retelling, but Jane Austen is a character. 5y
