The Water Margin
The Water Margin: Outlaws of the Marsh: The Classic Chinese Novel | Shi Naian
16 posts | 5 read | 1 reading | 12 to read
Based upon the historical bandit Song Jiang and his companions, this Chinese equivalent of the English classic Robin Hood and His Merry Men is an epic tale of rebellion against tyranny and has been thrilling and inspiring readers for hundreds of years. This edition of the classic J. H. Jackson translation features a new preface and introduction by Edwin Lowe, which gives the history of the book and puts the story into perspective for modern readers. First translated into English by Pearl S. Buck in 1933 as All Men Are Brothers, the original edition of the J.H. Jackson translation appeared under the title The Water Margin in 1937. In this updated edition, Edwin Lowe addresses many of the shortcomings found in the original J.H. Jackson translation, and replaces the original grit and flavor of Shuihui Zhuan found in Chinese versions, including the sexual seduction, explicit descriptions of brutality and barbarity, and the profane voices of the thieving, scheming, drinking, fighting, pimping lower classes of Song Dynasty China. Similarly, the Chinese deities, Bodhisattvas, gods and demons have reclaimed their true names, as has the lecherous, over-sexed and ill-fated Ximen Qing. All of which was sanitized out when first published in 1937. While Chinese in origin, the themes of The Water Margin are universal enough that it has served as a source of inspiration for numerous movies, television shows and video games up to the present day.

Alright, lots of great stories but I can't get past the rotten morality.

The book kills nameless low ranked soldiers, massacre victims, family members of antagonists, etc., in the 100's of thousands.

War is gruesome, not something for mighty heroes to treat like a game. Ordinary people are not cannon fodder for the designated 'heroes' to kill while the text to slides past their deaths as if they don't matter.

‘This Chinese equivalent of the English classic ‘Robin Hood and His Merry Men‘ is an epic tale of rebellion against tyranny, developed from folktales about the real life rebel Song Jiang who led a peasant uprising in the early twelfth century.‘

I finished my #reading1001 annual read! The Water Margin is one of the 4 traditional classics of China. It is repetitive, but the story reflects the Confucian idea of The Mandate of Heaven for government. According to the intro, which I am glad I read both before and after the book itself. The outlaws/bandits/heroes are honest men cheated or set up by those with more power, and they flee to Liangshan Marsh to continue their honest ways. ⬇️

DreesReads They are also quite violent as they fight for good. This is not unlike the story of Robin Hood, but bigger and more complex. Very interesting and I‘m very glad I read it. I‘m also glad to be done. #1001books #1001booksyoumustreadbeforeyoudie 6y
Daisey Congratulations! 🎉 I‘m only half way through the version I have, so it‘s going to be a continuation into next year. I‘m not giving up, but I‘m also not going to read just that to get done by the end of the year. 6y
BarbaraBB Congratulations! Very good! 6y
erzascarletbookgasm Well done! I‘ve been meaning to read this. 6y

I didn't read much of this book for months, but recently I've been trying to make progress. I'm to chapter 42 of 100 or 40% through the novel, and this weekend I read volumes 9 & 10 of the graphic novelization. I'm getting tired of people trying to kill Jiang Song and then becoming fast friends as soon as they learn his name. It's mostly an endless cycle of violence and drinking, but I'm pretty committed to finishing at this point.

Lovely outdoor afternoon reading with Eleanor! I‘m catching up a bit on my long read of Outlaws of the Marsh with Volumes 5 & 6 of the graphic novelization to stay close to my progress in the novel to chapter 22. This story is getting more violent all the time.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I haven‘t attempted that one yet, and I‘m not sure if I will. Although I am planning to start The Count of Monte Cristo next week.😉 7y
Daisey @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I'm actually enjoying it, although it tends to get set aside for everything else which means I'm currently about 3 months and 20 something chapters behind where I would like to be. 🤷‍♀️ If or when you do attempt any of the classic Chinese novels on the list I recommend these graphic novelizations if they're still available through Hoopla. They've paired wonderfully with my reading. 7y
Daisey @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Also I loved Count of Monte Cristo but have no time to reread it now, although I've been debating trying it on audio. 7y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Daisey I loved it too when I originally read it years ago, I recently realized I had read an abridged version though, so I‘m going for the unabridged this time. 👍 7y
ErikasMindfulShelf Omg what a cutie 😍🐶 7y

I'm not quite where I hoped to be by this time in the year, but I have finished 15 chapters of this classic Chinese novel and 3 volumes of the graphic novel version. The graphic novel was a good review since it had been a while since I picked it up and all those characters get a bit confusing.

I'm really enjoying reading a few chapters of this classic Chinese novel and then pairing it with the graphic novel version. It's fun to have visuals to go with all of the names, and I especially like the addition of the maps. I've read through chapter 11 of the novel and finished Volume 2 of the graphic novels.

JenP I didn‘t know there was a graphic novel version. How fun! 7y
Daisey @JenP It is fun, and so far it's matched very well! 7y
Daisey @JenP I went back to Goodreads and looked; I‘m pretty sure this author has done graphic novel versions of each of the classic Chinese novels on the list. I hope I can still get them from Hoopla if/when I try those as well. 7y
JenP @Daisey that‘s great, thanks! 7y
Liz_M I think graphic novels or an animated series would be a perfect way to experience this epic, episodic book! 7y

It‘s the end of January and I am finally starting a group yearlong read. And there are 44 pages of front matter, aye yi yi, I‘m on page 11 of that! #1001books #reading1001

Suelizbeth Your copy is beautiful. Mine is a dud. And I‘m nowhere near as far along as you are. 7y
sprainedbrain I really need to start this... 7y
BookwormM I am up to chapter 17 7y

DreesReads @BookwormM I am hoping to make it into ch 1 today. @Suelizbeth this is a library book and I‘m pretty sure no one has read it—certainly not the whole thing. Managing the reading with checkouts all year will be interesting. @sprainedbrain start late-ish with me lol!! 7y
BookwormM Mine is a library book too and I don‘t think it has been read before either 7y
DreesReads @BookwormM I guess that explains why there aren‘t many library copies here!! My usual system has 3 different versions that are reference only and an ebook for checkouts. I had to go to my second system to get an actual book (they have just 1!). 7y
Daisey I‘m ready to start chapter 11, but I don‘t think I‘m going to make it much further in February. Too many books on my list! 7y
JenP I feel like I‘m never getting my book😭. I ordered it (amazon) then it never arrived so they reimbursed me. Had to reorder from a different seller and I‘m still waiting for it to ship 7y
DreesReads @JenP that‘s horrible!!! At least they refunded you, but how frustrating! 7y
JenP @AudreyMorris thankfully they reimbursed me because it was really expensive. The plus side is that I found a different seller with the exact same edition for half the price 7y

This year I‘m participating in a long read of the classic Chinese novel that has been translated as Outlaws of the Marsh and The Water Margin. I‘m using these 3 versions. The top right is my main read on kindle, but I can also get the ebook version below from the library for comparison. I also plan to read the graphic novel retellings. Last night I read Volume 1, which matches chapters 1-5 of the kindle version.

erzascarletbookgasm The Water Margin! One of the four essential classic Chinese novels! I should read these, it‘s probably easier to get through via graphic novels, I think. 🙂Enjoy! 7y
Yellowpigeon Good luck! This one is the only one of the four classics I haven't read. Should get it down from my shelf. 7y

AshleyHoss820 Good luck!! 🍀 You can do it! I think it's one of the longest on the list! 😊 7y
Liz_M @AshleyHoss820 Depends on which version you use. I opted for the 70 chapter version, which omits the amnesty and pardon of the bandits, rather than the extensive 100 or 120 chapter editions. :-D :-D 7y
AshleyHoss820 @Liz_M Good granny! I don't blame you for that! 😄 7y
Daisey @erzascarletbookgasm If you have Hoopla they are all available, along with one or two other retellings of Chinese classics. 7y
Daisey @Yellowpigeon @AshleyHoss820 Thanks! I haven‘t read any of the others for comparison, but I‘m finding this story/translation pretty readable. 7y
Kristelh Graphic novel. That would be the way to go. 7y

Picked up my yearlong group read (tagged), and 3 freebies from the giveaway carts. The German one is for my husband, I can‘t even tell if it‘s fiction or nonfiction 🤣 and it might be way over his reading level. I jeep@picking books up, I really need to finish something!! #1001books #libraryhaul

JenP Is that the full book or volume 1? I‘m still waiting for my copy to arrive but think they are in 2 volumes 7y
DreesReads @JenP This is the 70 chapter one, in one volume. Between 2 library systems it‘s the only version I can check out! The others are reference only, and I just can‘t imagine trying to read them lol! (edited) 7y
