18 posts | 35 read | 32 to read
Sixteen-year-old Eleanor Fitts brother is missing. And when she discovers that the Dead are rising in Philadelphia and wreaking havoc throughout the city, she knows that her brother is involved. So Eleanor enlists the help of the Spirit-Hunters. This motley crew, hired to protect the city from supernatural forces, is after the necromancer who has been reanimating corpses. Their skills can save her brother. But as Eleanor spends time with the Spirit-Hunters, and their handsome inventor, Daniel, the situation becomes dire. Now not only is her reputation at risk, but her very life may hang in the balance. In Something Strange and Deadly, the first book in a trilogy, Susan Dennard weaves together vividly imagined scenes of action, adventure, and gorgeous Victorian fashion to create an entertaining steampunk tapestry of humor, horror, and romance. Readers who love Cassandra Clares Infernal Devices series will be intrigued from the start.

Steampunk zombie YA with some romance and a capable heroine. First in a series. Dennard is a fantastic author and this earlier work shows she was great even with her first novel. Even though I don‘t love zombie books I still enjoyed it.

This book has a similar feeling to Dread Nation but the main characters are a bit more reserved, including the zombies. However, since Dread Nation came after this book, perhaps it is that Dread Nation is an intensified, more full bodied Something Strange and Deadly. Chicken or the egg...

Trying to fit in one more spooky read before Halloween

Eos462 How is this? Ive had it on my book outlet wishlist for a while. 5y
KeepCalmWithBooksAndCoffee So far I like it. Just haven‘t gotten back to it. If you like YA from this time period it is fairly typical. I‘m hoping the main character gets a little more brass to her. So I guess a mixed bag. But I‘ve only read 70 pages 5y

Third #BookHaul post of the day! 🙃 I'm almost done, I promise!

rubyslippersreads Lovely covers! 😍 7y
GypsyKat @rubyslippersreads Aren't they? They were also inexpensive and I've heard it's a cute series, so why not. 🙃 7y
Laura317 Might have to show this to my 13 yr old daughter. She loved Miss Peregrine so this might be up her alley. 7y

GypsyKat @Laura317 I haven't read them yet, so I can't say weather or not I would recommend them to a 13 year old. Has she read the Ruby Red series? It's really cute. 7y
[DELETED] 3803335244 I have these in ARC's from years ago, & I'm ashamed to say I haven't read them yet 🙈 I need to get to it! Beautiful covers! 7y
GypsyKat @ForeverNerdy It's funny how many people I've seen say they have old, unread arcs laying around! 🙃 7y
Laura317 @GypsyKat I'll wait to see what you think of them first, then. I'll tell her about the other though. Sounds good!! 7y

Very reminiscent of the Parasol Protectorate series and the Steampunk Chronicles. It's a fun read, ever so slightly predictable though, but that doesn't really take away from it. A fun cast of characters and has a great setting. There were one or two things that I didn't see coming which I was impressed with. Excited to see where the rest of the series goes.

Enjoying a rainy day on the balcony with an intriguing book and tea. Having devoured Dennard's Witchlands books, I'm exploring her backlist.

I'm not gonna lie I totally bought these books because of their covers but I actually enjoyed the first book and look forward to reading the next two. Steampunk, spirits, zombies and little bit of romance👌☺️
