May Day
May Day: Poems | Gretchen Marquette
14 posts | 1 read
You arrive at my altar with no idea what it means to worship--to adore. You haven't even learned it: ecstasy and suffering make the same face. --from "The Offering" May Day is both a distress call and a celebration of the arrival of spring. In this rich and unusually assured first collection, the poet Gretchen Marquette writes of the losses of a brother gone off to war in Afghanistan and Iraq, and a great love--losses that have left the world charged with absence and grief. But there is also the wonder of the natural world: the deer at the edge of the forest, the dog reliably coaxing the poet beyond herself and into the city park where by tradition every May Day is pageantry, a festival of surviving the long winter. "What does it mean to be in love?" one poem asks. "As it turns out, / the second best thing that can happen to you / is a broken heart." May Day introduces readers to a new poet of depth and power.

Me (April 5): I‘m going to read all 4 of my #ReadYourEbooks picks this month!

Me (May 5, mere hours before the numbers are picked): Ok, I read two. And by “read,” I mean I‘m just now finishing the last 30 pages of the second one. 🙄

And…here‘s my list for May!

Here‘s my living bingo card for May #bookspinbingo! We Need New Names is my #bookspin, which is great since it‘s a #ReadingAfrica2022 book, and my #doublespin is The Bookshop of Yesterdays, which I‘ve been meaning to read forever!

Librariana I think "The Bookshop of Yesterdays" is one that has been in my "Books about books" TBR stack for a while now, too! Hope you enjoy it! ? And as always, thank you for including me so I could see your live bingo board ??? 3y
shanaqui I love this way of doing it, but I've got a bunch of ebooks on my list. 😆 3y
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! Looks great!! 3y
Hooked_on_books @shanaqui I started doing the bingo challenge each month this way as a method to read down my unread physical books, as I have SO many. So, I usually only put those on the card, which always me to do it this way. It‘s fun! And it does help me get my books read, which is great! 3y

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! So are the colors a code, or just for prettiness? 3y
bekakins @TheAromaofBooks I use a different colour each month… books stay on my list till read & then I tick off with the colour for the month I read it… so a code of sorts but I mainly started doing it for prettiness 😆 3y

May‘s reading selection was small, but that worked out because it was a very busy month. Of course that also means all of my library holds have come in all at once for June. Wish me luck! 😜

I‘m sharing the books I‘m going to read in May. I used a random letter generator to pick my TBR. I‘ve seen people on YouTube choosing their TBRs this way and I wanted to try it for a month because it looked like fun. This game wasn‘t very nice to me. It was my first time playing. It gave me M twice and I added on the nonfiction book to my TBR that I wanted to read since the random letter generator didn‘t give me a letter for it.

Here is my initial #proposedTBR for May. My birthday is at the end of the month, so I reserve the right to completely throw this out the window. 🤣 I want to finish the books I started in April, Dark Age and A Small Town in Germany. Untamed is my work book club pick and we meet on the 11th. I‘m pretty sure Destination Unknown is the next LMPBC. Those are my must reads. The rest are a combo of favorites: authors, books, and genres.

rabbitprincess Keeping an eye out for your review of The Naive and Sentimental Lover if you get to it! It‘s one le Carré I have not yet got to. 4y
DGRachel @rabbitprincess I skipped over it when I started reading his books 20-ish years ago, but after he passed away last year, I decided to try to read all of his work in publication order. 4y

13 down for May. Dread Nation, Time and Time Again, and A Woman of Arabia were my favorites. Hit a slump mid-month where I just wasn't reading much but a push at the end got me back on track. Caught up on some series and started some new ones. Checked off a few challenge pieces and will be hitting book 75 soon. All in all some solid progress made.

LauraJ Well done! 6y

Happy May Day/Beltane/first day of Spring. 🌱🌼🔥. A May Day bonfire from when I was visiting family in the rural west of Ireland many many years ago. It was beautiful seeing all the bonfires on the hills. Also, be careful of any standing stones today 😜 #outlander
