When newly orphaned Cassandra Dashwood arrives as governess to little Sophy, the scene seems set for the archetypal romance between young girl and austere widowed employer. Strange secrets abound in the ramshackle house. But conventions are subverted in this atmospheric novel: one of its worlds is suffused with classical scholarship and literary romance, but the other is chaotic, quarrelsome and even farcical. Cassandra is to discover that in real life, tragedy, comedy and acute embarrassment are never far apart.

#14books14weeks 3 weeks already !Taylor‘s 2nd, hints of her later style.shades of Jane Eyre as Cassandra is to become governess to a child whose mother died in childbirth with a father still living with his sadness and letting his estate decline around him. The characters are well drawn , a gothic feel, with a plot twist that makes perfect sense yet came as a shock.I picked thin volumes in hopes I can fulfill this challenge.😁

batsy I see that I already have it stacked! A Gothic feel and a plot twist, sign me right up 🙂 10mo

One of the best things in life! When you go to a bookstore you shopped years ago ..before you moved away...still the same owner, still the same carefully curated selection of wonderful books! Chopin‘s 1st book ,#virago , and a Grace Lumpkin !😻😻📚📚
Happy dance!

LeahBergen Ooooo!😍😍😍 I‘ve never read Grace Lumpkin. Should I? 4y
Leftcoastzen @LeahBergen She is an excellent writer ,her approach was more left leaning in the 1930s.I think her under appreciation could be the rise of the McCarthy era red scare in the fifties .She writes more of the working class .I loved (edited) 4y
batsy What a gorgeous haul. Green Viragos and that Chopin cover! 4y

1. A book? Who'd have thought?!
2. 2 years? I think...
3. Edinburgh Fog, the Scottish Eton Mess http://www.informededinburgh.co.uk/edinburgh-fog-recipe/
4. 5.41, the same time as the last three days 😬
5. Tea, chocolate, a wax burner and a skull...
@mindea #humpdaypost

vivastory Is it the skull of the person who woke you up at 541? 😬💀 6y
Moray_Reads @vivastory it would have to be mine then, it's my own brain that's decided this is an appropriate time to get up 😂 It's a just an ornament 6y
vivastory I've never been a morning person, so waking up that early sounds really difficult. My brother wakes up at 430, which I'm just baffled by 6y

Moray_Reads @vivastory I can usually get back to sleep after. I look at the clock, roll my eyes and stay in bed until 7! The exactness of the time is just ridiculous 6y
vivastory Well, that's good. Nothing is worse than waking up early and not being able to fall asleep again! Especially on days off. 6y
Melissa_J The Edinburgh Fog sounds delicious! If I ever get back there I‘m going to have to try it. 6y

Mehso-so

Taylor is one of my favorite authors, so it pains me to say that I struggled to finish this. Cassandra is orphaned at the age of 19. She decides to be a governess, and her romantic ideas get the best of her when she decides that like Jane Eyre, she will fall in love with her widowed employer. But the house is dilapidated, the servants opinionated, and the residents super secretive. Very dark, with hints of DuMaurier‘s Rebecca. ⭐️⭐️

LeahBergen But it sounds amazing! 😮 6y
EvieBee @LeahBergen It might suit you better. 6y
LeahBergen I‘m going to go ahead and stack it (but you may say “I told you so” 😆). 6y

rubyslippersreads Lovely photo! 😻😻😻 The book sounds intriguing but might be too dark for me. I'll let @LeahBergen go first. 😄 6y
EvieBee @rubyslippersreads Lol good idea! 6y
LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads I might not be the best indicator - I love dark reads. 😄 6y
