Dirt Music: A Novel | Tim Winton
9 posts | 21 read | 7 to read
Winner of The Miles Franklin Literary Award, The Christina Stead Award, WA Premiers Book of the Year, Book Data/ABA Book of the Year Award, Goodreading Award-Readers Choice Book of the Year Set in the dramatic landscape of Western Australia, Dirt Music tells the story of Luther Fox, a broken man who makes his living as an illegal fishermana shamateur. Before everyone in his family was killed in a freak rollover, Fox grew melons and counted stars and loved playing his guitar. Now, his life has become a project of forgetting. Not until he meets Georgie Jutland, the wife of White Points most prosperous fisherman, does Fox begin to dream again and hear the dirt musicanything you can play on a verandah or porch, he tells Georgie, without electricity. Like the beat of a barren heart, nature is never silent. Ambitious and perfectly calibrated, Dirt Music resonates with suspense, emotion, and timeless truths.

A grungy small town love story that goes off on some deep psychological tangents. Rugged and slightly harrowing but written brilliantly in a style that is strong & unique to Winton.

I'm going to try to post a write up for each of the 6 #Booked2021 prompts during December, starting with #setinAustralia!🦘🐨

Australia Day 🇦🇺, on Jan 26, is the anniversary of the arrival of the first fleet of British ships at Port Jackson NSW. It is also seen by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders as the date which began the deliberate destruction of their people and cultures.

Earls, Winton, and Carey were favorites of mine when I lived ⬇

alisiakae in Australia in the 2000s. For #Booked2021, I plan on reading one of the two indigenous authors I have featured above, Taboo by Kim Scott or The Yield by Tara June WInch. (edited) 4y
Cinfhen I never knew you lived in Australia.....cool!!! 4y
Clare-Dragonfly I decided not to sign up for Booked but this is one of the prompts that had me tempted. Taboo sounds really good—stacked! 4y

alisiakae @Clare-Dragonfly My library has Taboo on Hoopla, so I'm pretty sure that's the one I will be reading! 4y
CarolynM I enjoy Nick Earls's books a lot, my favourite is still his first Zigzag Street. Where did you live in Australia? 4y
alisiakae @CarolynM my favorite is zigzag street too! I lived in Brisbane for 4 years, my hubs went to med school at UQ. I actually saw Nick Earls at a restaurant once, a coworker pointed him out.😄 @Cinfhen that‘s where Aaron went to med school! 4y
alisiakae @Cinfhen although just realized i posted the completely wrong decade that I lived there in my comment. 🤣🤣. We were there 2001-2006. 4y
Cinfhen That‘s so awesome! 4y
CarolynM Have you read tagged book? It has been a big hit here, it's full of Brisbane local references 4y
alisiakae @CarolynM I haven‘t, but it‘s on my list now! 4y

This was ok. I listened to it as an audiobook. I think I would‘ve liked it at lot more if I‘d read it instead.

Home for Xmas at my family farm in the central west of Oz that is badly effected by drought. This book is very fitting. Dirt Music started off with a bang but is slowing down & I‘m really not sure where it‘s going but loving it just the same. Tim mostly writes about men. Not as much this time.
P.S. please spare a thought for the struggling farmers this xmas. If we don‘t look after them & our precious environment, our food will eventually run out.

MrsMalaprop That is a stunning photo of a stunning book. I‘m glad you‘re getting through another Winton. Enjoy that family time. Thinking of the farmers and ushering rain 🌧🙏🎄. 6y
julesG Will try to blow the rain clouds over Germany your way. Climate change is real! 6y

#backtoreading #AnditsAugust #audiobookstogo #dayfour

I have only listened to two novels on audio - these two. We road tripped when our boys were young, from Brisbane to Cairns (which is a loong way), and we loved hearing the full cast version of #northernlights. I bought Dirt Music when I travelled 45 minutes each day to and from work for several years, but I mustn't have fallen in love 😍 with the experience because I never got another one.

Missusb Con't This was back in the day when there were actual CDs to play in the car stereo... 7y

inkcrush I've enjoyed audiobooks a lot in the last year - I just download them from Brisbane overdrive/BorrowBox and enjoy them while out walking. I do give up on at least half though, but the half I don't I really enjoy! 7y

I've been bingeing on podcasts the last two weeks and this morning I listened to @ReadingEnvy with guest @shawnmooney - great episode guys. I'm always thrilled to hear Australian books on non-Australian podcasts and this one featured a Tim Winton (not this one though). They loved it, most people do love Winton. I do not, I find his fiction overly colloquial, like he's trying to prove just how Australian he is, and under edited. So Winton, 👍or 👎?

shawnmooney I have been picking up on a strong anti-Winton undercurrent here and on Goodreads, and—keeping in mind I've only read one of his books, Breath—I'm flummoxed by it. Can you say more about this, perhaps share an example of his prose style that you don't like? I was a tad disappointed by the way he ended Breath, plot-wise, but I thought his prose absolutely soared. 8y
Joanne1 @shawnmooney I totally agree RE his prose, it's often breath-taking and his writing of the Australian landscape is among the best. I think it's his characters and dialogue I don't warm too (especially in Cloud Street), I feel like he's trying too hard to prove their uniqueness - or something like that. All the Wintons I've read I love the first third, get bored in the middle and just plain frustrated by the ending. (edited) 8y
shawnmooney I really appreciate hearing your detailed perspective. I shall keep it in mind as I read more Winton. Thanks! ❤️ 8y

Joanne1 @shawnmooney lots of people love him and certainly don't feel the same way I do. I also wanted to mention that I tagged his novel Dirt Music because it's spectacular setting (kind of like the excerpt that was read out in the podcast). So if you do like his novels thus would be an interesting one to look out for. 8y
Sue Where can I find this podcast ? (I confess I've never read Winton - mainly because he's like THE modern Australian writer who gets all the publicity. We have so many writers who are not straight, white and male who I would rather support.) 8y
Joanne1 @Sue I could not agree more, let's look a little wider! As for the podcast, just search for Reading Envy podcast wherever you get podcasts (I use iTunes but there are others). @thereadingwomen also have a great podcast. 8y
Sue Located and subscribed, thank you! 8y
ReadingEnvy Ah it is helpful to have your insight. I may end up disagreeing but to be fair the only character in the book I read was the natural world! Ha! 8y
Joanne1 @Sue my pleasure. Do you listen to any book podcasts? I'm looking for good Australian ones but am struggling to find any. 8y
Joanne1 @ReadingEnvy lots do disagree and to be fair his writing on the Australian landscape is pretty spectacular. Definitely his strength. 8y
Lindy @Joanne1 @ReadingEnvy I'm in the 👍camp. I've loved 3: Dirt Music, Eyrie, and 8y
ReadingEnvy @Lindy I recently came home with a copy of something by him so I'm looking forward to trying more!! 8y
thereadingwomen @Joanne1 I'll let you in on a secret, we have an interview with an Australian author coming up at the end of this month. 🤗 8y
Joanne1 @thereadingwomen woohoo!! Can't wait. 8y
Sue @Joanne1 I only listen to the book Riot ones and the Reading Women ones that are specifically bookish. The only Aussie book talk I've found is the ABC's book club. I have found the Deviant Women podcast, who talk about some interesting people. They've done a great episode on Angela Carter, and a couple of their episodes see, to have sprung from books, which they don't mention specifically but which you can find. 8y
Sue @thereadingwomen How exciting! Do we get clues? 8y
Joanne1 @Sue we seem to be listening to the same ones. Love abc book club but the seasons are always too short!! I'll check out the other one you mentioned too. Thanks. 8y
Joanne1 @Sue @thereadingwomen yes clues please! 8y
thereadingwomen @Joanne1 @sue She's a Stella Award winner and Kendra mentioned her in passing a few weeks ago. 😊 8y
Joanne1 @thereadingwomen oh I think I know who that might be. I'll be listening for sure. 8y
mischa I will be honest I've never read a Winton and don't intend to. I saw a few interviews with him a number of years ago and he appeared to be a total wanker so after that I was hell no. A guy I work with did try one of his books, however, but said it was far too boring to finish. 8y
Joanne1 @mischa I agree he comes off so arrogant in interviews. I've read two and won't be going back! 8y

"One night in November, another that has somehow become morning while she sat there, Georgie Jutland looked up to see her pale and furious face reflected in the window."
