Rivers: A Novel | Michael Farris Smith

For fans of Cormac McCarthy and Annie Proulx, a wonderfully cinematic story (The Washington Post) set in the post-Katrina South after violent storms have decimated the region. It had been raining for weeks. Maybe months. He had forgotten the last day that it hadnt rained, when the storms gave way to the pale blue of the Gulf sky, when the birds flew and the clouds were white and sunshine glistened across the drenched land. The Gulf Coast has been brought to its knees. Years of catastrophic hurricanes have so punished and depleted the region that the government has drawn a new boundary ninety miles north of the coastline. Life below the Line offers no services, no electricity, and no resources, and those who stay behind live by their own rulesincluding Cohen, whose wife and unborn child were killed during an evacuation attempt. He buried them on family land and never left. But after he is ambushed and his home is ransacked, Cohen is forced to flee. On the road north, he is captured by Aggie, a fanatical, snake-handling preacher who has a colony of captives and dangerous visions of repopulating the barren region. Now Cohen is faced with a decision: continue to the Line alone, or try to shepherd the madmans prisoners across the unforgiving land with the biggest hurricane yet bearing downand Cohen harboring a secret that poses the greatest threat of all. Eerily prophetic in its depiction of a Southern landscape ravaged by extreme weather, Rivers is a masterful tale of survival and redemption in a world where the next devastating storm is never far behind. This is the kind of book that lifts you up with its mesmerizing language then pulls you under like a riptide (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution).

Got this one last book signed by Michael Farris Smith. Now all of his books are owned by me and are signed. One of my favorite authors. Seriously, if you have not read anything by this author, you need to. I would start with Desperation Road. #MSBookFestival #LiteraryLaunchParty

KathyWheeler I bought this book because it‘s set where I live but I‘m having trouble reading it because it‘s a dystopian vision of where I live. 😄 It is good though and I need to finish it. 6y
Pelican71 I didn‘t get to see him 😔. I did buy his latest book that I didn‘t have 6y
LisaJo @KathyWheeler I understand that. I was listening to an Anne Bogel Podcast. She was talking about dystopian novels and whether she could read one if it took place in her area. I have read the prequel novella for this book it is pretty rough. 6y
LisaJo @Pelican71 The Fighter is good. For such gritty and rough story lines, he is such a beautiful story teller. I hope you enjoy it. 6y

If you are looking for a book that is both intense and haunting, look no further.

Rivers is set in a terribly storm battered version of the Gulf Coast. The United States has abandoned part of the land so battered by storms, it is nearly unlivable.

Between the incredibly compelling plot and the amazingly vivid characters, this book left me emotionally drained and shaken, and yet I loved every moment.

Five stars; highly recommend!

I've barely been able to squeeze in any reading time lately. A few minutes before I fall asleep at night isn't cutting it right now!

Mail call! Had to order this one recently. One of my favorite professors from college, who has remained a friend, recommended it, and after reading the description, I just had to get my hands on it. Definitely up next on my #TBR

Set along the gulf coast after a series of hurricanes have left the southern states devastated and mostly deserted. The government has drawn a line and abandoned that part of the country. One man is trapped by grief and unwilling to part with his last connection to the life he had before until a violent incident with others also fighting for survival spurs him into action. Atmospheric and absorbing. Recommend reading during thunderstorms ⛈

Zelma That sounds awesome. Added to my TBR. 7y

Just started Rivers by Michael Farris Smith. First chance all day that I have had time to read-had our first crawfish boil for the year so had to socialize most of the day. Gonna read now until I can't keep my eyes open 😴#Litsypartyofone

A group of people attempt to leave the lawless, hurricane ravaged Southern United States, heading towards what they hope is safety. I liked it. It was a quick, easy read. It was an interesting story with a couple of good plot twists.

A southern dystopian novel about a continuous string of hurricanes that pound the Gulf Coast. The story follows a man named Cohen and his struggle to cope in the waterlogged land. You'll look at heavy downpours a little differently after this one.
