The Breakthrough | Daphne Du Maurier
12 posts | 12 read | 9 to read
Dispatch the maimed, the old, the weak, destroy the very world itself, for what is the point of life if the promise of fulfilment lies elsewhere? On the windswept coast of rural Suffolk, a deranged scientist attempts to extract the essence of life itself. Penguin Modern: fifty new books celebrating the pioneering spirit of the iconic Penguin Modern Classics series, with each one offering a concentrated hit of its contemporary, international flavour. Here are authors ranging from Kathy Acker to James Baldwin, Truman Capote to Stanislaw Lem and George Orwell to Shirley Jackson; essays radical and inspiring; poems moving and disturbing; stories surreal and fabulous; taking us from the deep South to modern Japan, New York's underground scene to the farthest reaches of outer space.

For saying I don‘t normally read short stories or sci-fi, I didn‘t dislike this, but I didn‘t love it. Scientists experimenting with life after death. Dubious ethics and outdated mindsets made me feel equally uncomfortable! #AuthorAMonth @Soubhiville

I didn‘t know du Maurier wrote sci-fic! This is a decent story of an engineer who was sent to an isolated research laboratory to work with a scientist..sort of a mad science story that raises the moral & ethical questions. A good story with interesting plot, but would work better if it‘s longer, I think. But as usual, du Maurier‘s writing is brilliantly effective in creating a foreboding & disturbing atmosphere. Give it a go. 👍

I was gifted this short story by @veritysalter for Christmas, but since it arrived late (thanks, postal service!) I decided to save it for #AuthoraMonth !!

An engaging & fast read, I enjoyed this one & found it interesting, but not particularly creepy or tense.

5 🌟

cmastfalk If I love Rebecca, will I enjoy this one? 4y
jenniferw88 @cmastfalk probably, but it deals with the idea of life after death. It's also a bit out-dated in terms of learning disabilities, and trigger warnings for mentions of leukaemia 4y

Picked up a mix of little black classics and penguin moderns as shorter reads as I‘ve been in a bit of a slump. Gonna read this on the train today methinks
