Oh man, I feel like I need more days to digest this book. This is my first Ruth Ozeki book and it won't be the last. Usually, I am not a big fan of authors doing their own book narrations, but Ruth did a fantastic job. She sure is a wonderful storyteller!

The themes of bullying and suicide were very prominent, so there are definitely trigger warnings. However, I felt I learned so much about Japanese culture and I found it fascinating how ⬇️

vonnie862 Ruth writes herself and her husband as characters. It makes me wonder if this was a true story. Ruth mentioned that listening to the audio is one experience and that reading the print is another. Looks like I need to buy the physical copy! 2d
Graywacke Glad you enjoyed. Your comments are interesting to me because I struggled with her reading it herself. 🙂 2d

This book is due back in two days, and I don‘t want to renew it. I‘m not hating it, but I don‘t feel like spending seven more hours with it. Even though it‘s an #awardwinner and an #authoramonth selection, I‘m bailing. #springskies

Bookwormjillk I bailed too. Just not for me. 2d
Eggs Life is too short 🏆👍🏼🥇 2d
Graywacke I wasn‘t a fan. (Although it didn‘t help that i didn‘t like the way the author reads the audiobook.) 2d

Listened to this on audio, narrated by the author, and I just didn‘t love it. I feel like this is a book that I might like the movie version better of.

The other two I‘ve read by her were home runs, but this one was more #goodnotgreat. I‘d still love to read more Ozeki, though! #AuthorAMonth

Yumi runs away from her tiny Idaho town at 14 after sleeping with a teacher. As her parents age, a neighbor takes care of them, but when their health falters she returns with three kids in tow. Meanwhile, a group of organic food activists have targeted the area to protest GMO potatoes.

Soubhiville Wow your dogwood blossoms are huge! So pretty, I love them. 😍 6d

Bailedbailed

My second book by Ozeki and she just isn‘t for me. I really wanted to finish this one for #authoramonth but was finding too many creative reasons to avoid picking it back up.

AmyG I thought it was me but I agree with you. I did read it but I have no desire to read another of her books. 1w
JenReadsAlot I ended up bailing on this one too 1w

Ruth, living on an island in Canada, discovers a diary (written by Nau who lives in Japan), letters from WWII, and a watch inside a Hello Kitty lunchbox on the beach. They presumably made the Pacific crossing from Japan‘s massive tsunami. Ruth, who is half Japanese is able to read the diary but not the letters. The diary, though, leads her to believe Nau and her father are intent on committing suicide. Ruth illogically thinks she can save them ⬇️

Texreader when in reality, given the time for the diary to cross the ocean, the deeds are probably already done. Everything about this situation though is unusual and time isn‘t what we think it is. This is a very dark book and there are so many trigger warnings, I made a list:
Sexual Assault
Suicide
Harm to animals
9-11 jumper
Kamikazi pilot who doesn‘t want to die
Prostitution
Tsunami
Radiation
Bullying is the one of the worst, and it makes the ⬇️

Texreader reader want to bail. However, it is resolved in the end with a most unique ending I may have ever read. I wish this book weren‘t so dark. It really felt like the author was trying to make it as horrific as possible. So I had to take quite a long time to think on it before writing a review. Because of the ending, I recommend it. But beware of the darkness before the light. #authoramonth 1w
TheBookHippie I bailed…. 1w

Texreader @TheBookHippie I really wanted to but had invested so much time into it, and it‘s well-written. I‘m glad I stuck it out, but it was so darned dark. I felt a burden off my shoulders once I finished it. 1w
TheBookHippie @Texreader there‘s enough dark I fight not doing it in book form was my mantra. Writing is good. It‘s just too dark. 1w
slategreyskies Thank you for the trigger warning on this one. I think I‘ll drop the copy I‘ve been meaning to read off at the Little Free Library instead. 1w
Yenya1954 This was a very difficult book. I wanted to enjoy the story but I didn‘t. I had the audiobook and I didn‘t care for the narrator‘s voice. I wondered if I would have found it better on paper. 1w

Dry | Jane Harper
post image

"Dry" by Jane Harper is a great thriller set in a drought-stricken small town in Australia. Agent Aaron Falk investigates a supposed murder-suicide case and uncovers many secrets. The book has many twists and turns that kept me guessing until the end. If you enjoy reading thrillers, I highly recommend checking it out! However, I suggest reading the physical book instead of the audiobook. Thank you, @Soubhiville for organizing #AuthorAMonth
