Beyond the Woods
Beyond the Woods: Fairy Tales Retold | Paula Guran
20 posts | 3 read | 2 reading | 45 to read
Once upon a time, the stories that came to be known as fairy tales were cultivated to entertain adults more than children; it was only later that they were tamed and pruned into less thorny versions intended for youngsters. But in truth, they have continued to prick the imaginations of readers at all ages.Over the years, authors have often borrowed bits and pieces from these stories, grafting them into their own writing, creating literature with both new meaning and age-old significance. In the last few decades or so, theyve also intentionally retold and reinvented the tales in a variety of waysdelightful or dark, wistful or wicked, sweet or satiricalthat forge new trails through the forests of fantastic fiction. This new anthology compiles some of the best modern fairy-tale retellings and reinventions from award-winning and bestselling authors, acclaimed storytellers, and exciting new talents, into an enchanting collection. Explore magical new realms by traveling with us, Beyond the Woods . . .

Mehso-so

An interesting collection of stories intended to be fairy tale retellings. Some were captivating, some revolting, all unsettling. All were well written and all left me feeling slightly disturbed. None of them sat well with me. I did not “like” this book. In fact, I probably hated it. There was no simplicity of story and character. It all seemed so pretentious in their style. And yet there was something to be appreciated.

Ugh, this anthology is not at all suitably formatted to read on a phone. Blockquote is not a friend here. At least the stories themselves render okay.

esurient I'll port this to my ereader next. The table of contents promises an extremely strong showing, and I think I'll very much enjoy the editor's intros once they're more comfortably formatted. 5y

Finished this up tonight for my #fairytaleretelling prompt for #booked2019!

This is an anthology of fairytale retellings, many of them darker in nature than our traditional knowledge of fairytales. Definitely for adults rather than children!

I absolutely love fairytales, folklore, mythology and retellings. Really enjoyed this one! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

The winter weather is back here... 🙄 what better way to spend a night listening to ice falling outside than with some dark faerie tales? 🕯

What a great collection of fairytale retellings! I love there is a little intro page before each tale, that inteoduces the author and/or the original tale. Some stories were closer connected to their original story than others, which gave some great variety to my reading experience. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading a #fairytaleaday from this book in November 👏👏

My husband bribed me into eating a hot chili pepper with the promise of a book. I do not handle spicy food well, but I'll do anything for book. And the contributor list on this one was amazing.
