One Part Woman
One Part Woman | Perumal Murugan
15 posts | 15 read | 16 to read
Kali and Ponnas efforts to conceive a child have been in vain. Hounded by the taunts and insinuations of others, all their hopes come to converge on the chariot festival in the temple of Ardhanareeswara, the half-female god. Everything hinges on the one night when rules are relaxed and consensual union between any man and woman is sanctioned. This night could end the couples suffering and humiliation. But it will also put their marriage to the ultimate test.

A Tamil novel about a loving childless couple struggling with family and societal pressures. Sad but with a great deal of comic relief. The book ruffled some feathers and the author was threatened, which is how I came to hear of it and decided to read it despite the fact that I had filed it under “chicklit“ (which it isn't). Recommended.

I finished this while vacationing in Goa. It couldn‘t be further from my world of butter garlic prawns & sedate beaches. But this is all I looked fwd to every time I got back to my room. This book of a different time, custom and place is magnificent. The core issue of human lust, belonging, the idea of marriage-property-heir are still very present not only in rural India but across the world. #Booked2019 #IndigenousAuthor #SomethingsAreYetToChange

Story telling at it's best. Amazed how Murugan describes life of a simple farmer with so much sophistication and elegance with a element of mystery for the reader. The pain of being treated as a barren a d our community's reaction is described so beautifully. And when you think the ends near to the story he leaves you wanting for more. On to the second part with 2 endings (in 2 books), upto the reader to chose which book he picksup or even both.

Kali's Mother | One Part Woman

A highly controversial book due to which Author Perumal Murugan had to stop writing after a communal conflict in South India. Finally after High Court verdict later he was allowed to start writing again.

Set in rural India during the British colonial period the story follows a couple married for 12 years and unable to concieve. This 'failure' is the center of how the couple are treated by relatives, neighbors and even strangers who comment (quite nastily) on the lack regardless of the success of the farm. With the comments we see the extreme measures the couple will go to and be manipluated by family to appease the gods and have a child. 👇

mreads Translated from Tamil interesting backstory the author was attacked by right wing Hindus who called for a banning of the book and was forced to defend himself in a High Court in India, where the author's right to free expression was upheld. 6y

Come January it‘s Spring here in India. So here‘s the roundup for my first leg of #Booked2019 @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft Tharoor for Night-Oriented Title, Perumal Murugan for Indigenous Author, Kiedis for Musician, Ghosh on climate change for Social Media Focus (my timeline is filled with updates on Cyclone Gaja) and it‘s a tie between the Anglo-Indian Cookbook & the alimentary canal for Food or Beverage on Cover.

AppuNthebooks The only thing missing is CliFi. Hope to plug that with The Bone Clocks. Also just wanted to check - @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft does the Great Derangement fit the bill for Social Media Focus? 6y
Cinfhen I love that you‘re reading Spring🌹🌻🌷 I‘m planning on reading Scar Tissue for musician too!! And yes, absolutely works for social media focus 🤓 6y

I just finished reading this masterpiece and it is an instant favourite. Originally written in Tamil, this book created quite a stir when the English translation was released by Penguin. And the events that followed led to the author announcing his retirement from writing.
The novel has an open ending and author has already written two independent sequels in Tamil based on the possible outcomes.

One of the few contemporary novels translated from Tamil (a language spoken in one state in India and in Sri Lanka). Controversial because of its content but brings to light the casteism and sexism that's still prevalent in rural farming communities in India. Fabulous read!
