Three Cups of Tea
Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time | Greg Mortenson, David Oliver Relin
The astonishing, uplifting story of a real-life Indiana Jones and his humanitarian campaign to use education to combat terrorism in the Talibans backyard Anyone who despairs of the individuals power to change lives has to read the story of Greg Mortenson, a homeless mountaineer who, following a 1993 climb of Pakistans treacherous K2, was inspired by a chance encounter with impoverished mountain villagers and promised to build them a school. Over the next decade he built fifty-five schoolsespecially for girlsthat offer a balanced education in one of the most isolated and dangerous regions on earth. As it chronicles Mortensons quest, which has brought him into conflict with both enraged Islamists and uncomprehending Americans, Three Cups of Tea combines adventure with a celebration of the humanitarian spirit.

I listened to the intro, did some googling, and decided to bail. After reading about the controversy and that Relin committed suicide once the truthfulness of the book was called into question, I just couldn‘t continue.

First May #roll100 is a bummer of a DNF

PuddleJumper You have to stay true to yourself. Better to DNF a book than feel compromised. The whole situation over the book seems sketchy 3y
Smarkies I have also taken this book off my TBR because of all the controversy. Doesn't seem right reading it after the sketchiness. 3y

This was a really good book! I didn‘t really post that many quotes for this book because I read this in one sitting and didn‘t want to put down the book to post a quote, although the quotes I posted a few minutes ago were that ones that hit me the hardest and so I went back to find them again. As said before this was an AMAZING book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Now please pardon me while I try to piece my heart back together. 🖤

If you really want to change a culture to empower women improve basic hygiene and health care and fight high rates of infant mortality the answer is to educate girls.

This book is said to be similar to ‘The Kite Runner‘ and I loved that book, so now I‘m starting this now one!

This is my plan for #FoodAndLit #Pakistan in August. I haven't done very well with this reading challenge the past few months, though, so we'll see. 😁

#readingasia2021

Mortenson stumbles across a remote village in #pakistan after a disastrous descent of K2 Mountain. He returns to build a school, which leads to many more.

It‘s a really warm book, although perhaps slightly hagiographic, but maybe that‘s just me being my usual miserable self! I did prefer the earlier parts where Greg met the villagers and built the schools; once the organisation expanded it became more distant and political.

Librarybelle I find the cover quite striking in its subtlety 4y
squirrelbrain @Librarybelle - he had a very strong focus on educating girls in particular. It is a very striking cover. 4y

We Americans think you have to accomplish everything quickly…Haji Ali taught me to share three cups of tea, to slow down and make building relationships as important as building projects. He taught me that I had more to learn from the people I work with than I could ever hope to teach them."

Listening to this on audiobook. I didn't want to read it with all the foreign words it would keep tripping me up not knowing the correct pronunciation--so I listen. But I'm not a fan of the narrator whose character voices border on the offensive.

Catching up with #colormepretty; this is for Day 11, #red. I missed yesterday due to a kitty vet visit and inexplicable exhaustion. Hopefully I‘m not getting sick ... Sleeping too much would cut into my reading time. 😁

Knowing that some of it was fabricated made this kind of hard to get through. A lot of good did come of Greg's school building efforts and If I were unaware of the drama and confessions by him, I'd likely find it more inspiring. Unfortunately, his fabrications really took away from being moved enough by the story to recommend it. Writing was also so-so. I enjoyed the beginning of the book, but it had a hard time holding my attention. I also have a hard time believing parts of it happened the way Mortenson said it did, and now I'm really wanting to read the rebuttal, Three Cups Of Deceit.

Lea I‘m glad I read it before all the drama came out so I could appreciate the story for what it was. It‘s sad and disappointing how it all turned out. 6y
WorldsOkayestStepMom @Lea when I started reading TCoT, i had no idea there was a rebuttal. Then I found out and it changed how I was reading it. 6y

Three Cups of Tea is a nonfiction novel about Greg Mortenson and his inspiring campaign to build a bold in the most dangerous, remote, and anti-American reaches of Asia. It is all based on real life experiences. This book would be perfect for students in 8th-12th. #UCFWaltersLit

Seans_h @lizzie0922 This book looks interesting to use in the classroom because you can tell your students how it was all based on real life experiences. Like you said, it‘s probably recommended for 8-12 grade students but nonetheless, the link attached includes a summary of the book and reason why it should be taught. Great post! #UCFWaltersLit 7y

This book is moving and inspiring. Can't finish it though. Knowing a majority is allegedly fabricated dampens the spirit of it.

Rcoco I thought it was just the prologue that was found to be fabricated? 7y
LibrarianChels I read a few articles, including an interview with Mortenson in 2014. He wouldn't deny the accusation, which makes me cautious about taking the book at face value. Maybe I'll watch the documentary that fact checks the book. 7y

"Here (in Pakistan and Afghanistan), we drink three cups of tea to do business; the first you are a stranger, the second you become a friend, and the third, you join our family..."

This has been on my list forever! Glad I spotted it at the high school's book sale.

Thank you @PennyPistol ! I ❤️ my #beachinbookswap 🎁. That scorpion lollipop is insane. My dad used to call me the Cheshire Cat and I ❤️ magnets. Your book choices will make me a more educated reader. Three Cups of Tea is especially interesting to me. Thank you!

Eryn2513 Three Cups of Tea is an amazing book! It's one of those ones that really stick with you, I read it about 8 years ago and still think about it often. 7y
PennyPistol You're welcome @MaleficentBookDragon! I happen to love magnets too. I saw that one and thought it was just too cute. I also wanted to send you a little piece of Arizona. Happy Reading! (edited) 7y

BucklingBookshelves I haven't read any of these but I'm intrigued. I like nonfiction a lot on audio, so I'll have to see if my library has any of these. 7y

This book was all the rage for a while, so I'm using it for the #peace prompt; however, I know that the author has recently found himself in a bit of trouble because of some of his practices while working to spread peace. #MayBookFlowers

This book touched my heart. The setting is Pakistan and Afghanistan. I was reminded of how blessed I am to live in a country where education is available to everyone, and that education, particularly of women, can solve many problems.

I was forced to read this in college and meet the man and his giant lying head and I hated it.

DivineDiana Oh my! Just starting to read. Why do you say he is a liar? 9y
ScrappyMags @DivineDiana I know it's a bit late but if you Google him you'll see this book was made up, he lied, etc 8y
DivineDiana @scrappymags Thank you for getting back to me! Never too late! I did Google him after your comment. Although I was disappointed, I still felt that he was remarkable and did help many people. He seems to have repented and is continuing to help others. 8y
ScrappyMags @DivineDiana yeah I think the problem is one of credibility when you do that because then you have to question what he IS being truthful about. :( 8y
