10 posts | 14 read | 14 to read
A 25th anniversary edition of the enchanting story of a widow who finds herself in possession of an extraordinary broom after a witch falls into her garden. Some of Minna Shaw's neighbors don't trust her clever broom. "It's dangerous," they say. But Minna appreciates the broom's help. She enjoys its quiet company. But one day two children get taught a well-deserved lesson by the broom. For her neighbors, this is proof of the broom's evil spirit. Minna is obligated to give up her dear companion. Chris Van Allsburg, master of the mysterious, brings this tale to life with moody and memorable pictures that will haunt readers long after the book's covers are closednow in a new edition to celebrate this beloved book's twenty-fifth anniversary.

Charming and eerie story about a widow who helps a fallen witch 🧙🏻‍♀️ who overestimated the power of her broom.

This is by one of my favorite children‘s illustrators. The pointillist style pencil drawings are detailed and entrancing! And the story itself is the perfect amount of scary for little kids, complete with a wonderful happy ending.

Spooky and fun. Great for inferential thinking. A widow finds help from an old witch's broom.

#NewHogwartsAdventure Day 14: From the first page of this magical book: “Witches‘ #Broom(s) don‘t last forever. They grow old, and even the best of them, one day, lose the power of flight. Fortunately, this does not happen in an instant. A witch can feel the strength slowly leaving her #broom.” My full review here: https://wp.me/pDlzr-1wN

vkois88 That's so sad, but those illustrations are absolutely breathtaking! 6y

The illustrations in this book were amazing. I loved their old-fashioned style and the greys and browns. And the story was interesting. I want a broom like the one in this story. I mean, it plays the piano! 😂

For #ghastlyghosts the story of a ghostly witches broom. "She has seen the ghost of the broom. It was as white as snow and moved through the woods at night carrying an axe...The next night it returned, circling even closer, and the night after it came again, tapping the axe lightly on the door..." I love the illustrations (and it isn't actually as menacing as my quote makes it sound!) Perfect #hallowreads for #raisingreaders

I asked my teacher sister-in-law for a suggestion of a Halloween book that isn't scary for #allhallowsread today. She told me she had just finished reading The Widow's Broom to her 3rd grade class. I looked it up and it sounds great! #giveascarybook @litsy
