Finished book. A dark, gritty yet exciting read.
Started: October 20th, 2019
Finished: December 21st, 2019
Genre: Historical Fiction
I could not finish it beforehand since I was focused on John Toland's war narrative 'In Mortal Combat'
The general plot of the book revolves around the lives of Hideki, Okinawan child soldier fighting for his homeland, and Ray, a 17-year-old US Marine partaking in his first battle on Hideki's homeland.

4thwallbreak Continued Summary:
This book is a must-read for those who enjoy thrilling battles, unsparing imagery and a clear, realistic look on the consequences of war. The pacing of the book is wonderful, utilizing scenes of warfare in a way that is able to keep you engaged in the story, but not overwhelmed because of said engagement. It is also very unpredictable, amplifying the impact of the story's message greatly. Overall, it is a phenomenal read.

I‘ve read bits and pieces about the Battle of Okinawa, but this story clearly described the reality of that battle without too much gore. Told in alternating chapters from the perspective of a young U.S. soldier and a Okinawan teenager, it provides a picture of the chaos and bloodshed experienced by all of the groups involved as well as some of the cultural aspects of Okinawa separate from Imperial Japan.

There is a family near Japan when world war 2. There is a boy named Hideki who is about to run in to the war zone with two grenades. I I recommend this book to someone who likes War.

Hideki lives on the island of Okinawa, near Japan. When WWII crashes onto his shores, Hideki is drafted into the Blood and Iron Student Corps to fight for the Japanese army. He is handed a grenade and a set of instructions: Don't come back until you've killed an American soldier.

Here is a haiku I wrote about this book:

Muggy and humid,
No food, water, or shelter,
Only solitude.

bishopwatchestheoffice I love how you choose to write a haiku! That's such a creative way to write about a book, especially to me because #poemsarethebest and its a new way to tell future readers about how the book could be 5y

Mehso-so

I loved the book, “Refugee“, so this book was perfect for me. Although, I did feel confused most of the book, and it didn't help me understand the setting better. I also must say that the book is very enriching, as it (mostly) describes the wars between America and Japan during World War 2. I would recommend this book to people who like history, but I would probably not read this book again.

Just closed up my book fair and sent everything back - here‘s what I got to keep with my profits! I‘m really pleased with how it went this year!
These will be a nice addition to my library‘s collection as well as some great prizes for various library activities throughout the year! #schoollibraries #librariansoflitsy #litsyloveslibraries

MelissaSue81 My daughter got that Resistance book from her book fair this year. It‘s not something I‘d have thought she would have liked but she seemed to enjoy it. Her first WWII book, I think. She also got The Collector from a scholastic order this fall and liked that too. 6y
Johanna414 @MelissaSue81 it was a popular title with my students as well! 6y

Grenade was an absolutely fantastic, albeit gut-wrenching read! With two dueling perspectives on opposite sides of the American invasion of Okinawa in 1945, we as readers get a sense that American soldier Ray and Okinawa native Hideki have far more similarities than differences. This was a very entertaining read packed with historical content and a very powerful message about the dueling nature of mankind. Can‘t wait to use this one in class!
