Finished book. A dark, gritty yet exciting read.
Started: October 20th, 2019
Finished: December 21st, 2019
Genre: Historical Fiction
I could not finish it beforehand since I was focused on John Toland's war narrative 'In Mortal Combat'
The general plot of the book revolves around the lives of Hideki, Okinawan child soldier fighting for his homeland, and Ray, a 17-year-old US Marine partaking in his first battle on Hideki's homeland.
This book is a must-read for those who enjoy thrilling battles, unsparing imagery and a clear, realistic look on the consequences of war. The pacing of the book is wonderful, utilizing scenes of warfare in a way that is able to keep you engaged in the story, but not overwhelmed because of said engagement. It is also very unpredictable, amplifying the impact of the story's message greatly. Overall, it is a phenomenal read. 5y
