Guide to the Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy
Guide to the Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy | William B Irvine
One of the great fears many of us face is that despite all our effort and striving, we will discover at the end that we have wasted our life. In A Guide to the Good Life, William B. Irvine plumbs the wisdom of Stoic philosophy, one of the most popular and successful schools of thought in ancient Rome, and shows how its insight and advice are still remarkably applicable to modern lives. In A Guide to the Good Life, Irvine offers a refreshing presentation of Stoicism, showing how this ancient philosophy can still direct us toward a better life. Using the psychological insights and the practical techniques of the Stoics, Irvine offers a roadmap for anyone seeking to avoid the feelings of chronic dissatisfaction that plague so many of us. Irvine looks at various Stoic techniques for attaining tranquility and shows how to put these techniques to work in our own life. As he does so, he describes his own experiences practicing Stoicism and offers valuable first-hand advice for anyone wishing to live better by following in the footsteps of these ancient philosophers. Readers learn how to minimize worry, how to let go of the past and focus our efforts on the things we can control, and how to deal with insults, grief, old age, and the distracting temptations of fame and fortune. We learn from Marcus Aurelius the importance of prizing only things of true value, and from Epictetus we learn how to be more content with what we have. Finally, A Guide to the Good Life shows readers how to become thoughtful observers of their own lives. If we watch ourselves as we go about our daily business and later reflect on what we saw, we can better identify the sources of distress and eventually avoid that pain in our life. By doing this, the Stoics thought, we can hope to attain a truly joyful life.

Hibernating this book as well.

Still working through this. It‘s slow going, not because the book is hard to read, but because it makes one think and take action. Exactly what I need right now.

I‘ve decided to become a “practicing Stoic” and actually put this advice to use.

The book makes some great points, helps translate the Stoic teaching to modern words and applications.

Thoroughly enjoying it for its ability to make me pause and reflect.

Still reading through this daily. We lost our sweet cat last week, so it‘s put me back a bit, but also emphasizes just how much I need to put this into practice.
Some of these techniques are ones I‘ve already somewhat adopted without realizing it, but it‘s nice to get validation.

Enjoying this book, even though you kinda have to do the work, too!

Including photo of our girl.

Picking this one back up again, going through some rough life moments (extra stress, sick kitty, etc), which has left me contemplative. I think this might be just what I need to read at the moment.

As a newbie to stoic philosophy, I found this book a straightforward and easy-to-follow introduction to the topic. I appreciate the author's efforts to not only explain the ancient stoics' views but also deal with possible modern criticism and offer some updates to the philosophy. ⬇️

eeclayton The book is slightly repetitive, but as I listened to an audiobook (with excellent narration by András Mészáros) over the course of several weeks, this didn't bother me that much. 2y

This was an interesting read/listen. A lot of the general Stoic views of life and death gel with my own. They‘re also similar to Buddhism, which I was entertained that the both the author and myself are failed Buddhists (I always fall asleep at meditation time!😂😴). I think more there‘s a lot from this ancient school of thought that can be adapted for modern living, even if they‘re smaller tidbits based on common sense.

Begin each day by telling yourself “Today I shall be meeting with interference, ingratitude, insolence, disloyalty, I‘ll-will, and selfishness — all of them due to the offenders‘ ignorance of what is good or evil.” — Marcus Aurelius. (p. 55).

FINALLY got around to writing my therapeutic book review on William B. Irvine's "A Guide to the Good Life." This book was the first I ever read on #Stoicism and has had a HUGE impact on my work with clients.

Just got back from a weekend at my favourite retreat centre. This was my third visit, so I decided to reserve the “Hideaway”, which meant I got to stay in my own private treehouse.

Got so much reading done in between hikes. I feel fantastic. Reviews coming shortly.

Soubhiville Oh wow, looks heavenly! Where is this? 5y

I am aggravated by this book. I actually loved 3/4 of it, basically his explanation and interpretation of the Stoic philosophy; I am almost an adherent. Then, in the last 1/4 of the book, he takes it upon himself, as a modern philosopher and practitioner of Stoicism, to “reconsider” it according to his own biased non-spiritual and non-Christian view. Yuck, what a deceptive hypocrite. ⭐️⭐️

Sills Good to know I definitely won't bother reading it. 6y
Laura317 That‘s how I felt reading Jordan Peterson‘s 12 Rules for Life. Parts I could agree with, but when he started calling the Bible “stories and fables”, I got pretty upset. 6y
DrSabrinaMoldenReads Exactly. He waited until the last part of the book to report that he did not believe in God, criticizing traditional Stoicism for being consistent with Christianity or belief in God. Still bugs me today. Glad I got the book from the library and was not tricked into buying it. Thanks for sharing about Rules for Life. @Laura317 6y

Okay, I‘m a therapist but I kinda agree with this quote, at least if we are speaking of the more traditional/early theories, especially of individualized counseling.

Let‘s not do that! The life wasting, that is. Definitely do the philosophy of life thing.

But I wonder, what other philosophies of life do you think are out there? The book mentions zen Buddhism and I tend to lean toward Aristotle‘s ideals and virtue ethics...but there must be more.

🤔What say you Litsy?🤔

6/5💚s

EVERYONE READ THIS BOOK! Potentially life changing! Offers a history of stoicism, practical guide & advice, & how to incorporate it into modern life. Well written & w/ a touch of humor & self disclosure. Sure, he bashes therapists & politics a bit but I have to say I agree w/ him (could disagree a tad on the therapist part though 😉). I plan to incorporate this book in my personal & professional life!

QuoteQueen Oh! And her therapist friend asked to read it after her. AND apparently it's been in the top 5 of a reading list for therapists (so I'm told, can't confirm). And here I just stumbled upon in during my usual browse of the philosophy section. 😜 @TheBibliotherapist 7y

I have been kid & husband free for over 13 hours and it's been glorious! I went and saw Justice League by myself, picked up this gem, contemplated if philosophical guidance could be considered a therapy niche, and I saw Thor Ragnarok with a mom friend. Now I'm going to read The 100: Rebellion past my bedtime. 😊
