War of the Wolf
War of the Wolf | Bernard Cornwell
13 posts | 13 read | 11 to read
Bernard Cornwell's epic story of the making of England continues in this eleventh installment in the bestselling Saxon Tales series--"like Game of Thrones, but real" (The Observer)--the basis of the hit Netflix television series The Last Kingdom. His blood is SaxonHis heart is VikingHis battleground is England"Perhaps the greatest writer of historical adventure novels today" (Washington Post), Bernard Cornwell has dazzled and entertained readers and critics with his page-turning bestsellers. Of all his protagonists, however, none is as beloved as Uhtred of Bebbanburg. And while Uhtred might have regained his family's fortress, it seems that a peaceful life is not to be - as he is under threat from both an old enemy and a new foe. The old enemy comes from Wessex where a dynastic struggle will determine who will be the next king. And the new foe is Skll, a Norseman, whose ambition is to be King of Northumbria and who leads a frightening army of wolf-warriors, men who fight half-crazed in the belief that they are indeed wolves. Uhtred, believing he is cursed, must fend off one enemy while he tries to destroy the other. In this new chapter of the Saxon Tales series--a rousing adventure of courage, treachery, duty, devotion, majesty, love and battle, as seen through the eyes of a warrior straddling two worlds--Uhtred returns to fight once again for the destiny of England.

Another enjoyable book in the series. I especially liked the parts where Uhtred was talking to the priest about the poem.

#Two4Tuesday again, a day late 🤦‍♀️

(1) Tagged. Haven't quite finished it yet, but almost.
(2) The Essex Serpent bored me, so I DNFed it.

I enjoyed this, but for the first time in this series, I felt that Bernard Cornwell was beginning to run out of steam, that the novel was not as interesting as the others. It was inconsistent too in tone and a mismatch with the others books. Uhtred had won back Babbenburg, but there was a disregard for him at the Witan, that this powerful warrior was being disregarded. Weird. 3/5

Uhtred has grown old. He is finally home, but beset on all sides by kingdoms that wish to add Bebbanburg to their swathes of territory. Cornwell has given us another thrilling chapter in medieval England through the eyes of his hero. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I‘ve waited pretty much all year for the NYPL to renew its ebook license for this book, so I just went ahead and borrowed the audiobook. Since I had already gotten 80% through the book, I just needed it to end already.

I thought that Utred will retired after he took back Bebbanburg but his fate seem that he will keep fighting untill he die untill he meet with Gisela in Valhala.

The latest in Cornwell's Saxon Tales. Not my favorite of the series but another good story of Uhtred of Bebbanburg.

Mehso-so

This is number 11 of a series that probably should have stopped at 9. I thought 10 was maybe a blip - it was ok - but the blip has carried on going down.
1-9 of the series are awesome, but Uthred is 60 now and maybe should be retiring 🤷‍♀️
Disappointed.
Confused by 65% 5 stars on Amazon- fans who don‘t want to criticise?

LeahBergen I‘ve only read the first 6 (or so?) but I keep buying them for my husband. 5y
TrishB @LeahBergen be interested to know if he thinks they‘re going off the boil? 5y

My #NovemberWrapUp. I read 11 books this month and up to 78 for the year! I tried to put the images in order from favorite to least but they were all good. I got The Hearts Invisible Furies in just under the wire, finishing it at 11:30 last night. Still counts for November!

Freespirit Wow great work 5y

"The sun was shining, but I felt as though strorm- dark clouds were shrouding the world, and I just sat in the saddle not moving..."
I am very familiar with that feeling. A feeling of darkness rising around you when you should be happy and everything is beautiful, of suddenly feeling cursed.

Only 9 pages in and the reoccurring quote of the book appears. Uhtred's catchphrase translates to "Fate is inexorable". I got it tattooed on my inner arm a few years ago. Anyone else have a book tattoo? I know a lot of you lovely people must.

madamereadsalot1 I have 5! Lothlorian leaf from LotR. Scottish thistle with the Fraser clan motto from Outlander. Golden Snitch from HP. White rabbit from Adventures in Wonderland. Hand shadow wolf with a quote from American Gods as a nod to that book as well as my love for Odin and Norse mythology. Already have "plans" for more of them, just have to have the money first! 5y
WhiskeyMistress I have a quote in ancient Greek from the epigraph of The Wasteland by TS Eliot. It translates to “I wish to die”. 5y
GingerAntics I have one from a TV with accompanying book series, if that counts. lol I definitely want more, but I need the money first. 5y

CaliforniaCay I love hearing the meanings behind other peoples tattoos! I have Tolkiens initials on my wrist, the HP from Harry Potter on my ankle, and the winder clan symbol from Children of Blood and Bone on my shoulder. 5y
kristincatastrophic @CaliforniaCay I agree, I love when people get passionate about the stories. Your ink sounds great! 5y
GingerAntics It used to have the Doctor's oath...but it's kind of bled together a bit in that part. 5y

My favorite series has a new installment! I don't know why but I really thought this wasn't coming out until January but it came out last month. Long story short I splurged and bought it for myself tonight. Time to take a break The Heart's Invisible Furies and start this.
