This is one of CRZ's lesser-known books, a YA novel about a group of teenagers about to age out of their orphanage. Set in Calcutta in the 1930s, Ben & Sheere are fighting against an evil that has waited sixteen years to exact on their family. I like that their friends have distinct personalities, but the story isn't bogged down with more info than we need for an effective story.. This had a little less of the beautiful prose I expect from CRZ, ⬇️
Book 2 of the YA trilogy by Zafon: Set in Calcutta in the 1930s, The Midnight Palace begins on a dark night when an English lieutenant fights to save newborn twins Ben and Sheere from an unthinkable threat….Great story

Another great book from Carlos Ruiz Zafon this time set in Calcutta. While this is a YA book it is definitely dark and has hints of Shadow of the Wind with the historical detail that doesn‘t shy away from violence and mild horror.
At its heart this is a story about friendship, family and making peace with the past.
I love the pictures from each of the chapters.
Loving this book and the illustrations this is definitely dark for YA
I use Amazon sparingly when buying books but in preparation for November's #authoramonth I used a small gift card to buy these used from the marketplace. I had no clue one of them was an ARC. It is in less than very good condition, but I'm willing to overlook it for the probable rarity now in my possession.
I have really gotten into the works of Carlos Ruiz Zafón in the past year and this was another brilliant and emotional tale by him. While shorter than the others I have read, it was still a beautiful tale full of gothic touchstones and melancholy. The imagery it conjured in my head while reading was fantastic.
While reading at my godparents for some holiday festivities, I couldn't help ogling these gorgeous antique books
In his second novel Zafon's art of building misterious, lyrical and stunningly beautiful fictional worlds is beginning to blossom. It's not so elaborate yet, as it will be in The Shadow of the Wind, but such quotes make me feel the same light #melancholy and #nostalgia as my favorite #Zafon's works. #childhood #loneliness #Catalan
#QuotsyApril18 Day 9: That crying must be an extra eerie sound if it calls out to a #predator. I think I will have to get back to reading Zafon soon. I haven‘t read this series yet, apparently it is a trilogy.
“Those places where sadness and misery abound are favoured settings for stories of ghosts and apparitions.”
Haven't posted on Litsy in 2 months because I haven't read in 2 months!!! 😭 It's been a crazy, busy time and I just haven't made reading a priority when I normally do. Trying to figure out what my problem is when I finally pick up Midnight Palace again, read a few pages, and come across this character description that almost perfectly describes my personality. I think it explains a lot! Will try to do better! 🙃

Zafon knows his craft: great to see him channeling Mary Shelley here. Quality description, so vivid!
