The Deep Blue Good-by
The Deep Blue Good-by: A Travis McGee Novel | John D. MacDonald
16 posts | 26 read | 12 to read
From a beloved master of crime fiction, The Deep Blue Good-by is one of many classic novels featuring Travis McGee, the hard-boiled detective who lives on a houseboat. Travis McGee is a self-described beach bum who won his houseboat in a card game. Hes also a knight-errant whos wary of credit cards, retirement benefits, political parties, mortgages, and television. He only works when his cash runs out, and his rule is simple: Hell help you find whatever was taken from you, as long as he can keep half. John D. MacDonald was the great entertainer of our age, and a mesmerizing storyteller.Stephen King McGee isnt particularly strapped for cash, but how can anyone say no to Cathy, a sweet backwoods girl whos been tortured repeatedly by her manipulative ex-boyfriend Junior Allen? What Travis isnt anticipating is just how many women Junior has torn apart and left in his wake. Enter Juniors latest victim, Lois Atkinson. Frail and broken, Lois can barely get out of bed when Travis finds her, let alone keep herself alive. But Travis turns into Mother McGee, giving Lois new life as he looks for the ruthless man who steals womens spirits and livelihoods. But he cant guess how violent his quest is soon to become. Hell learn the hard way that there must be casualties in this game of cat and mouse. Features a new Introduction by Lee Child

I liked this story but it has left me very disturbed. Abuse and sad (to me) ending.

🕵️‍♂️ a protagonist who doesn‘t fit the conventional image of lawman or investigator and can be eccentric, mixed in with shady criminals. Though sometimes loners, Noir MCs collaborate with other noirs to help their victims.
🕵🏻‍♀️ I read a lot of John D. macDonald‘s Travis McGee books (each title has a color in it). McGee,tough and intelligent, lives in Florida on the houseboat The Busted Flush, (won in a poker game), and takes on dangerous 👇

Eggs …assignments for desperate clients. Fun reading! Thanks for the tag Lisa! Great questions 👏🏻👏🏻 2y

Picked up the first 3 of this series in Florida. Wasn‘t drawn by the cover but by the comments from Stephen King, Jonathan Kellerman, Mary Higgins Clark, Dean Koontz, Sue Grafton, John Saul and Lee Child. Love finding these older mystery series and what a powerhouse group of fans! Only took a few chapters in to see why.

This book genuinely surprised me. It surpassed my expectations for the genre, with truly poetic passages that I found myself re-reading. I picked it up for a light read during a trip to New England to visit family, and now I feel like I need to read more of this central character's adventures.

HeinrichLyle "Adventures," come to think of it, really underplays what McGee went through over the course of this narrative. More like "Trials." 6y

Grilling out today. Re-reading The Deep Blue Good-By since it has come up a couple of times in the last month. Also, writing an episode of The Saint.

I bought this after it was mentioned in another book. I enjoyed the well written turns of phrase. Reading it was like a sociological study in the social norms of a bygone era. The plotline was pure genre cliche and a bit dark. But the writing itself is good. It's a fast read. Great for getting out of a reading slump. I would like to read the whole series; for fun and to see how the social commentary changed over those turbulent decades.

minkyb I remember devouring these books. Good memories! 7y

The time capsule sexism is a bit off putting but Travis McGee is an interesting enough character to bring me back for another book.

The great American crime series and a great look at America and Florida from the 60's through the 80's. In an alternate timeline, there is a Travis McGee film series that rivals James Bond.
