A Big Mooncake for Little Star written by Grace Lin is a MF book that has won the Caldecott award. The tale tells the story of Little Star who becomes enamored by the large mooncake she and her mother made. Every night she pays it a visit. It looks super delicious! It is so delicious that Little Star cannot hold herself back from trying just a small bite. Perhaps one too many. This book is great for a RT.

dbears1 I would love to use this book in my classroom as a RA during science because it introduces the phases of the moon. 4y
DrSpalding Scholastic provides reading summits in the summer in a variety of locations. In the summer of 2019 several of the faculty members went to their summit in Orlando. I got to see this author explain all about this particular book and how she grew up as an Asian American. So interesting. Excellent resources and book selection. 4y

So lovely! A modern, magical story without the old-fashioned fairy tale tropes. (Spoilers in my next comment.) Illustrations are easy to see and the use of the black background is so clever! The text allows for lots of open ended questions, like 'What will happen next?' or 'Why did Little Star made that choice?' #dw2020reads #campreadalot2020

cozypunk I liked how Little Star was independent, doing her own chores and walking to the moon on her own. She turns a simple activity into a adventure. Even though Mama isn't in the story much, it's clear she and Little Star have a fun bond. I definitely want to read more by Grace Lin! 4y

This RF picture book was a 2019 Caldecott Honor. The whimsical images take us in an adventure to discover the curiosity and a part of the mischievousness of the main character. The author has different activities related to the book and one of them is an RT. I think this book could be a really cute RT between teacher and students! #UCFLAE3414SP20

Zelymarie.R I would like to use this https://www.curiouscitydpw.com/2018/09/03/big-mooncake-activities/ to introduce the story through multiple media using UDL 2.5. Doing this we provide ESOL #17 with contextual support with multiple media. 5y
DrSpalding This is a book I have been wanting to own. Nice resource. I especially like the mobile. You could actually use these cutouts for the readers theater script or to perform a storytelling! (edited) 5y

This F book would be the best DR for young readers. The story is about a giant mooncake that Little Star's mom made for her. She asks her, daughter, not to eat it all too fast. By night after night, Little Star eats the moon cake until it is all gone! The students would have a blast reenacting this story. #ucflae3414f19

YesseniaN As a classroom activity, I would create a story map on the whiteboard in just words. Afterward I would ask the class to create a story map with pictures. ESOL strategy offering multiple means of representation for the same information. https://www.teachingbooks.net/tb.cgi?tid=57535

“Until one night, Little Star‘s mama went to look for the Big Mooncake. Where was it? It was gone! Instead of a glowing, round cake, there was just a trail of twinkling crumbs.”

A Big Mooncake for Little Star written and Illustrated by Grace Lin is a heart warming Fantasy Fiction PB that tells about her cheeky daughter eating the mooncake into the phases of the moon. It‘s a wonderful story that cross concepts with science: perfect for a primary grade RA. I would utilize ESL strategy #24 and UDL 8.2. Here is a resource to go with the text that helps students understand the moon phases.

DrSpalding Cool image for a recent award winner! High-quality resource. Use this book during science instruction. 5y

A big moon cake for little star by Grace Lin is a Caldecott winner and is published in 2018. Little star is a young girl who is constantly thinking about the moon cake that her mother had made for her. She eventually breaks her moms rule and eats the mooncake before she was allowed to. Each night little star would take little bites from the cake. Each night she took little nibbles it would then start to look like the moon in its different phases.

Definitely my FAVORITE children‘s book that I‘ve read so far! The pages are so crisp and clean, and the black pages give such a good scenery to the sky. This book shows outstanding imagery and is a good imaginative view for children to understand how the moon phases.
