A Big Mooncake for Little Star written by Grace Lin is a MF book that has won the Caldecott award. The tale tells the story of Little Star who becomes enamored by the large mooncake she and her mother made. Every night she pays it a visit. It looks super delicious! It is so delicious that Little Star cannot hold herself back from trying just a small bite. Perhaps one too many. This book is great for a RT.
So lovely! A modern, magical story without the old-fashioned fairy tale tropes. (Spoilers in my next comment.) Illustrations are easy to see and the use of the black background is so clever! The text allows for lots of open ended questions, like 'What will happen next?' or 'Why did Little Star made that choice?' #dw2020reads #campreadalot2020
This RF picture book was a 2019 Caldecott Honor. The whimsical images take us in an adventure to discover the curiosity and a part of the mischievousness of the main character. The author has different activities related to the book and one of them is an RT. I think this book could be a really cute RT between teacher and students! #UCFLAE3414SP20
A big Mooncake for Little Star is a great classroom Caldecott. This informational book about the phases of the moon is complimented with beautiful pictures.
This F book would be the best DR for young readers. The story is about a giant mooncake that Little Star's mom made for her. She asks her, daughter, not to eat it all too fast. By night after night, Little Star eats the moon cake until it is all gone! The students would have a blast reenacting this story. #ucflae3414f19
“Until one night, Little Star‘s mama went to look for the Big Mooncake. Where was it? It was gone! Instead of a glowing, round cake, there was just a trail of twinkling crumbs.”
Lin‘s choice of illustrating this picture book is unreal. Her use of blacks and yellows to make everything pop is just beautiful.
A Big Mooncake for Little Star by Grace Lin published in 2018 is a great picture book that I think children would love. A must need in the classroom!!
This was my favorite page because it‘s when she starts eating the moon cake. I would do a turn and talk and see what the kids think happen next
I would use this book for kindergarten through second grade I think they would really enjoy and understand it
This book is a caldecott honor book. I absolutely loved this book it‘s the cutest i‘ve read in so long
“But would Mama notice if she took a tiny nibble? Little Star didn‘t think so! And she flew back to bed”
“But would Mama notice if she took a tiny nibble? Little Star didn‘t think so! And she flew back to bed”
This book made me think back to when I was a child and I always wanted to eat all the snacks my mom has bought me in the kitchen in the middle of the night!
This Caldecott award winning book was so sweet and fun! I love the use of multiple pages for illustrations to emphasize the words of the story! Truly deserving of the award!
I liked when the mom came in the room in the end and instead of getting upset she was excited to make another cake while bonding with her daughter
I thought this was a very cute book. the pictures and repetition were very intriguing.
A Big Mooncake for Little Star written and Illustrated by Grace Lin is a heart warming Fantasy Fiction PB that tells about her cheeky daughter eating the mooncake into the phases of the moon. It‘s a wonderful story that cross concepts with science: perfect for a primary grade RA. I would utilize ESL strategy #24 and UDL 8.2. Here is a resource to go with the text that helps students understand the moon phases.
I really enjoy this story! I‘ve always loved the moon and I think this does such an amazing job of making it whimsical and beautiful

“Little Star‘s mama laid the big moon cake on the night sky to cool.”
In this stunning picture book that shines as bright as the stars in the sky, Newberry honor author Grace Lin creates a a heart warming original story that explains the phases of the moon
This is a gorgeous picture book that tells a whimsical origin story of the faces of the moon. Little star loves the delicious moon cake that she bakes with her mama.
“Little star took tiny nibble, after tiny nibble, after tiny nibble of the big moon cake.”
I would read this story to my class and they can see the different phases of the moon and maybe we could bake a mooncake together.
A big moon cake for little star by Grace Lin is a Caldecott winner and is published in 2018. Little star is a young girl who is constantly thinking about the moon cake that her mother had made for her. She eventually breaks her moms rule and eats the mooncake before she was allowed to. Each night little star would take little bites from the cake. Each night she took little nibbles it would then start to look like the moon in its different phases.
“There was that big moon cake, an almost perfect circle all alone and delicious in the sky. Would her mama notice if she took another tiny nibble? Little star didn‘t think so.”
This would be a great book for talking about astronomy, the sky, stars or anything moon related! I can imagine doing a lesson with this book and following it up with Oreo cookies shaped into moon phases! Absolutely love this book and will use it in the future.
Definitely my FAVORITE children‘s book that I‘ve read so far! The pages are so crisp and clean, and the black pages give such a good scenery to the sky. This book shows outstanding imagery and is a good imaginative view for children to understand how the moon phases.
This is an Own Voices picture book that celebrates the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival, an Asian holiday. This is a sweet little story.
