Lumberjanes Original Graphic Novel: The Infernal Compass
Lumberjanes Original Graphic Novel: The Infernal Compass | Lilah Sturges
12 posts | 11 read | 4 to read
Eisner Award-nominated writer Lilah Sturges (Fables, Thor: Season One) teams with artist polterink (Enough Space for Everyone Else) for the first Lumberjanes graphic novel in a story about finding your way and navigating life, love, and a literal forest. When the Janes start to become separated during an orienteering outing thanks to a mysterious compass, Molly becomes more and more insecure about the effect of her relationship with Mal on the other girls. Meanwhile, a lonely woman explorer is trying to steal the compass, with the help of some weirdly polite automaton butlers.

Back to the original Lumberjanes graphic novel. A cute beginning, but the girls have really come a long way since this.

This was a fun little self-contained graphic novel set in the Lumberjanes universe. I really loved the art. Molly and Mal evaluate their relationship while on a navigational hiking trip that quickly goes off the rails because of a malfunctioning magical compass. Of course the lumberjanes find their way back to each other again!

ALA book haul no. 1. This is the stack of comics I was plied with for summer reading prizes. Omg, Fantagraphics reps were so nice! As soon as I mentioned prizes, they grabbed a box and started filling it for me. 🥰 including Angel, Buffy, Ronin Island, The Magicians, RL. Stine, Ben 10, Hex Vet, Avant-Guards, and Pandora‘s Legacy.

charl08 That's so great! 6y

I really enjoyed this original Lumberjanes graphic novel! Definitely some of my favorite characters. I love that this story focused on relationships affecting other relationships. #litsyatoz #graphicnovel

I just got it and already read it. I went in to this mostly blind, just knowing it was a graphic novel separate from the comic arcs. I was surprised that it was mostly black and white, just some green to represent the evil compass. The story was good, but not as fast-paced as usual, and the art was just not what I expected.

Underwhelmed. Idk. OGNs are supposed to have longer in-depth narratives, but this story seems shorter and simpler than story arcs in the series--how is that possible?? And I can't tell if the writing is underwhelming or if it's how the letterer presented it; things are exciting!!!! Loud!! Fun!! In the comic, but this was lots of statements with periods. Bland art. Maybe this book is a whole different mood on purpose?

Molly/Mal were CUUUUUUUTE THO

queerbookreader Recommendation: try it and see how you like it. This OGN is presented a lot differently than the comic series. You might like it, you might not. Lumberjanes is a queer comic that is Boom! BOX's best selling series and shatters the treatment of queer content as being Adult, NSFW, inappropriate, etc because it is truly for all ages. I will always love & support Lumberjanes for the path it has paved (even if I'm not a big fan of this storyline 😉) 6y
mcipher Molly and Mal are so so cute together! You can‘t go wrong with Lumberjanes even when they‘re not the best story. 6y

Been hype about this for months and had this on hold for weeks and.......it's so teeny? I'm a little underwhelmed? The book itself is super small and super thin and the last fifth of the book is just a reprint of issue 1 and....ya. I'm gonna read it and I'm gonna try really hard to love it but those are my initial thoughts--did anyone else think this too?

Also, just got a BUNCH of new followers outta nowhere 👀 idk why but hey folks 👋🏼

BethM This series is underwhelming. I didn't go past one. Seemed like a regurgitation of a Girl Scout series I read as a kid. I also got a bunch of new followers today too 🤷‍♀️ 6y

I was planning on waiting until the holidays for this one, but my husband ended up picking up last week‘s comics for me today because our October has been insane and he saw this and grabbed it. Best spouse. Going to cuddle my very photogenically demanding cat and get into this! I am so looking forward to more Mal and Molly. #friendshiptothemax
