I‘m behind on my #3books posts! These are #3books I read based on the covers.

Goats was more the title. Sadly, the book didn‘t work for me.
Don‘t You was because the title made me think of the Simple Minds song 🎶 & I ended up enjoying the story
Cottage because I needed a book with water on the cover for a reading challenge. The story was only meh.

So what I‘ve learned is I‘m not great at picking books based on their covers 😆

cathysaid And now Simple Minds has claimed my brain 😂😂😂 4y
wanderinglynn @cathysaid you‘re welcome! 😆🎶 If it helps, that song always brings to my mind The Breakfast Club 4y

⭐️⭐️💫Really all I want this review to say is: “eh 🤷🏻‍♀️” haha this book was fine, it was a quick read & I thought the main character seemed pretty fleshed out, and I liked her sister & her Bridget Jones-esque friend group. I full on hated the idea that her first love didn‘t remember her...high school might seem a long way off when you‘re 30, but not to the point that you completely forget people.

1. Tagged – didn‘t get it finished for January, so it‘ll probably be the first one done for February!
2. Leia by Claudia Gray
3. I just finished Good Omens (again). It‘s so brilliantly cast & I love the chemistry between Michael Sheen & David Tennant.

So I thought going into this book based on the cover and the synopsis that this would be a fun three star rom com. It wasn‘t. It was a much deeper book about gaslighting, family issues, sexual assault, and men behaving very badly. But this book also made me laugh a lot.

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

https://www.theguardian.com/books/2019/nov/15/young-adult-ya-authors-sarah-desse...

Back in August, I wrote a review about the tagged book. I bought the book, wrote my review, posted and woke up to a lot of mean tweets from the author & her friends. I haven‘t written a review since then. In an effort to catch up, I made a video, which you can view at theludicreader.com

Anyone else ever had an unpleasant encounter with an author?

Lauredhel The only way an author should EVER respond to a review - if somehow the best advice “never ever ever respond to a bad review” eludes them - is with “thank you for reading and reviewing my book”. (edited) 5y
vivastory 👆 Daniel Greene's recently posted video about Dessen is definitely worth checking out IMO 5y

vivastory & I'm really sorry to hear that happened to you. There's no excuse for that. 5y
Reagan Oh my, that‘s awful. It‘s tough because I think generally people try to be fair, even when they don‘t like the book, but as a writer you have to know that not everyone will. Thanks for your honesty, not someone I will be seeking out to read if that is their response to an honest review. 5y
TheLudicReader @vivastory thanks for pointing me in the direction of that video. My experience was certainly nothing like that, but I literally stopped reading my tweets until it died down. 5y
BlameJennyJane Wow. That‘s just unbelievable. And her friends showed up to the bash? Now I don‘t want to read any of them. Although Dessen isn‘t my thing I did have some Picoult in my TBR and I‘ve read some of the others. 5y
jb72 I just read that article earlier today on FB. It was posted by another author. It seems we have come to a point where it is okay to bash reviewers and other authors just because you don‘t like what they have to say. There is a book on GR where reviewers readily admit to not reading the book, but gave it bad reviews. I just don‘t understand that. 5y
jb72 @vivastory That‘s a good video and he is absolutely right. The college should never have apologized for an alum having an opinion over a book. It wasn‘t even a bad opinion. 5y
vivastory @jb72 It's sad that the college apologized & it's sad that some of the journalists apologized. What is astonishing to me is that the group voted on it, Dessen & the other authors are acting like this one person singlehandedly stopped the book from being selected. 5y
jb72 @vivastory Exactly. The student wanted a more open and broader (more difficult topic) subject to read and discuss. While a basic YA can be fun to read (for adults and teens), it is up to par for a campus wide read? I think the students had a responsibility to make a book choice that would open a dialog of hard issues. YA is important, but sometimes it is not the right choice at that specific moment. 5y
TheLudicReader @jb72 that poor girl in the Dessen debacle got a bad deal. I teach high school and have lots of Dessen books, but you know exactly what you are getting when you read her. At the university level, I think we should be expecting an elevated discussion. And you are right, @vivastory Dessen acted like this young lady single handedly destroyed her reputation or something. Ridiculous. And for all those other writers to jump onboard. 😠 5y

Good read but it took me awhile. The title intrigued me & my love for all things 80s movies. It was definitely interesting. I was over half way through reading when it finally sucked me in. It was hard to read with all the British terms so not knowing terminology & "slang" did take away from the enjoyment. But all in all its a great read about finding yourself, standing up for your self and that first loves might end up being your true love.

This is a good find!
I feel I have been becoming more and more critical about books since last year. But I have to give kudos to this author Mhairi McFarlane for her blend of snarky and sweet and so honest protagonist. I became vested in the story from the prologue (rare these days). Just read this fictional TripAdvisor review she wrote in Ch One! "Satan's sweet" ?

Makes me want to write again ?

This story is about Georgina who ends up being a barmaid at at a newly open pub. When she accepted the job she didnt know she would be running into the boy she fell in love with when she was In school.

BookNightOwl I really thought I was going to read a romance but this didnt have that much of it. I felt like there was a lot of things going on with all the characters but still felt like it was all of the place. I just felt like this read wasnt for me. Thanks Netgalley for providing a copy of this book for an honest review. 5y

This turned out to be more of a story about personal growth and courage with a splash of romance. I loved watching Georgina grow as a character and become even more confident. Oh, and Lucas is just 😍😍

New book feels ✨🍓

Georgina‘s life isn‘t going as she planned. From being fired from her shitty job and being cheated on, it‘s looking grim. Until an old flame from high school enters the picture. Will they reconnect , and will she finally get her Prince Charming ?

I‘m loving it so far!

BooknerdsLife Hahaa I see we got the same book 😆🙌🏼💖 So happy to hear you‘re enjoying it 😁 I can‘t wait to read it too! 6y

Georgina Horspool is so real it's difficult not to love her. Unemployed and single on the same day and heading home to a roommate who's not her biggest fan either. This rom-com explores some tricky themes but it mostly fun and witty. This wasn't perfect for me but still an enjoyable 3 stars.

My full review is up on my blog now 📚

I've enjoyed every Rare Birds Book Club book that I've received and I've certainly been impressed with the selection so far! For some reason my shelf is looking a little bare at the moment, so when I found my latest parcel on my door step, I couldn't wait to see what was inside!

This book is so much more than romance. It is funny, sweet, and heavy at times. McFarlane explores some complex relationships, and the dynamic of not being where you thought you'd be later in life and what that does to one's psyche and worth. She created some endearing and engaging characters and I would certainly recommend Don't You Forget About Me.

You guys. Oh. You. Guys. Missing the sort of chick lit (yes I hate that term too, but it‘s the best shorthand for this) we used to get? Where there was a heroine who had some issues but it wasn‘t all misery all the way through? With humour and a terrible ex boyfriend and a family that doesn‘t quite get it, but updated for now without the regressive attitudes? Where she fixes herself & it‘s not the man who fixes her? This. Read this. Read it now.
