A Winter Away
A Winter Away | Elizabeth Fair
3 posts | 2 read | 10 to read
"My last secretary was thirty-five," old M. said gloomily, "and no more sense than a child of ten. Or else she wasn't all there. You all there?" he asked suddenly, giving Maud a searching look. "No banging your head on the table? No throwing the china at me? Hey?" Young Maud has made her escape from an overbearing stepmother and come to stay with her cousin Alice and Alice's companion Miss Conway in the countryside. Alice and "Con" have arranged a job for her as secretary to Mr Feniston, an eccentric and intimidating neighbor who seems to have driven his previous secretary to a nervous breakdown. In between cataloguing Mr Feniston's library, dodging his temper, and encounters, awkward and intriguing in turn, with his son and an alienated nephew, Maud finds herself involved with local eccentricities and dramas, including a "secret" romance which has everyone talking. She may never be the same after this winter away! Furrowed Middlebrow is delighted to make available, for the first time in over half a century, all six of Elizabeth Fair's irresistible comedies of domestic life. These new editions all feature an introduction by Elizabeth Crawford. "Miss Fair's understanding is deeper than Mrs. Thirkell's and her humour is untouched by snobbishness; she is much nearer to Trollope, grand master in these matters."--Stevie Smith "Miss Fair makes writing look very easy, and that is the measure of her creative ability."--Compton Mackenzie

Pickpick

‘A Winter Away‘ didn‘t have much of a plot per se, but the novel takes place in an idyllic village setting with a fabulous cast of characters who endear & make you laugh. A maid named Who‘s it, vegetarian regiments, ‘go to bed‘ biscuits (which I now want to do, myself), a temperamental puppy, a crumbling estate, a library full of books, dinner parties with comical endings & yes even a bit of romance. It was the perfect book for a snowy January.

Crazeedi Hope you had a great Valentine's day!!❤❤ 5y
catebutler @Crazeedi It was wonderful, so much fun to celebrate, with my love! I hope you had a great one too, I just got your sweet Valentine in the post, thank you!! 💝 5y
Crazeedi @catebutler I'm trying to get more notes written, sorry I haven't been very prompt, but I think about you and my #litsylove friends often❤❤ 5y
catebutler @Crazeedi I am so far behind it‘s atrocious, but I remind myself that this group is laid back, so I try not to beat myself up too much! I too love and care about our little #litsylove group!! 5y
Crazeedi @catebutler exactly 🥰 5y

Look at my fabulous birthday gifts from @LeahBergen Such great book picks—I‘d ❤️ to do a buddy read of A Winter Away. My BFF will steal that movie annual. And how did you know I‘ve been wanting that Little Anne book? ⬇️⬇️⬇️

rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen The bookmarks are all gorgeous; the LMM card with all the Anne-ish sayings will have pride of place among my Anne books. And all the stationery goodies —you know exactly what I like. Can‘t wait to eat the chocolate and sink a Titanic teabag! 😄 Thanks so much for everything! 😘 (edited) 6y
LeahBergen Yayyy! 👏🏻👏🏻 You‘re so welcome! 😘😘 Do you have others in that Little Anne of Canada series? And I‘m quite enjoying that Titanic tea myself. 😆 6y
rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen I didn't know there were others. Something new to collect. 😊 (edited) 6y

rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen 😂 BTW, I forgot to say how much I ❤️ the little note on each package. Not to mention your notepaper. 6y

Young Maud has #GoneAway to the countryside to avoid her overbearing stepmother and lands a job cataloguing the library of the the crotchety Mr. Feniston. She soon finds herself embroiled with his (younger male) relations and other villagers in this 1957 comedy of domestic life.

LeahBergen @AlaMich It does sound good, doesn‘t it? I should really read it soon. 😆 6y
LeahBergen @britt_brooke I do, too (and I can get a bit crotchety myself every now and then 😉). 6y
LeahBergen @Ruthiella Yes! I always love any of the “forgotten author” publishers. 😆 6y
LeahBergen @emilyhaldi I‘m hoping I enjoy these as I bought them all for a good deal without reading the author before. 😆 Well, I DID read bits of them all before purchasing so I should be safe. 🤞🏻 Have you read any Angela Thirkell? She seems to be frequently compared to her (I‘m a Thirkell fan). 6y
TrishB These look lovely 💕 6y
CarolynM I'm going to have try this one and see if it's up to the Thirkell standard😀 6y
batsy I know I said this all the time in your comments, but what a pretty cover! 😆 6y
erzascarletbookgasm What a pretty collection! Another author I don‘t know 🙈 but I‘ll be looking her up! Are these like Frances Brody type of books? 6y
saresmoore I just purchased one of hers in ebook form, and it was still the pretty cover that convinced me, though I won‘t be able to see it while I‘m reading. 🙃 6y
quietjenn I really love her books! 6y
britt_brooke @LeahBergen Yeah, me, too. 😬 6y
emilyhaldi Nope! Haven't read Thirkell but I will be looking into her too!! 6y

rubyslippersreads Sounds like a “new” author to collect. 😊 6y
LauraBeth More than anyone else on Litsy, you‘ve introduced me to authors I‘ve never heard before ❤️ 6y
