I picked up this short play for a reading challenge on Goodreads. I‘ve never read any Sartre before but this was compelling. Three individuals wake up to find themselves in hell. I‘ll post my favorite quote from the end of the book below, with spoiler tags.👇🏻 I think it sums things up pretty accurately. 4⭐️

#classics #Sartre

JenlovesJT47 “So this is hell. I'd never have believed it. You remember all we were told about the torture-chambers, the fire and brimstone, the "burning marl." Old wives' tales! There's no need for red-hot pokers. HELL IS-OTHER PEOPLE!” 3d
lil1inblue It's been ages since I read this, but I found it so fascinating! 3d
JenlovesJT47 @lil1inblue it‘s so interesting! I‘d love to see it in person! 💙🩵💙 3d

The ebook edition I got was kind of garbled at times (weird typos), but I found this a surprisingly brisk read. Nice to finally place some of the quotations that go around in context.

Mostly just read it for this StoryGraph challenge, which echoes a Goodreads challenge: https://app.thestorygraph.com/reading_challenges/b39b226a-7d82-4267-a215-77dde52... But I appreciated it more than I'd expected.

My husband and I went to see this play tonight because a friend of mine played the character Estelle. It was a fascinating play and we loved it! So I figured I'd log it here to remember a fun night.

So, do you suppose Sartre was an introvert? #hell #quotsymar20 @TK-421

L‘enfer, c‘est les autres.

I liked reading this for a French literature class at university. We had one semester of plays, such as No Exit, Rhinoceros, and Cyrano de Bergerac.

vkois88 I had to stop reading the blurb when I saw it was three people in a small room... that alone is scary enough and close to hell for me! I get claustrophobic and anxious around too many people 😦 7y

Hell is—other people!

Handmade_Redhead My feelings exactly after a week of customer service. 9y
IndyHannaJones I did a speech piece out of this in high school. It is very difficult to make this play into a one woman show. 9y

I read Huis clos for my advanced French class and even though I did not understand everything-we will discuss it in class and then I will😄-it was pretty good.
It's existentialism and shows a place where hell is not a place of physical torture. There are only four characters one of which is minor and one room they are in.

Gezemice Lol! Reminds me when I saw a billboard with "Hell is real" - and I thought, yep, and it is wherever the people are who put this sign up. 9y
BookBabe Omg, I love this! 😍😁 9y
BookishFeminist Yes!! I love it! I've been tempted to get this pattern before because I completely agree 🤐 9y
Hobbinol Sartre was a genius, of course, but with a strabismus in one eye, it's a good thing he wrote the old fashioned way and left cross stitch to others!😏 9y
