Burma Chronicles | Guy Delisle
15 posts | 27 read | 14 to read
Guy Delisle's newest travelogue revolves around a year spent in Burma (also known as Myanmar) with his wife and son. Burma is notorious for its use of concealment and isolation as social control: where scissor-wielding censors monitor the papers, the de facto leader of the opposition has been under decade-long house arrest, insurgent-controlled regions are effectively cut off from the world, and rumour is the most reliable source of current information. An impressive and moving work of comics journalism from the author of Pyongyang and Shenzen.

Another book down for #readingasia2021 #burma #myanmar This is a reluctant pick. There are a bunch of trivial things that slow the narrative, and abrupt ends to chapters that are discombobulating, but there are also a lot of fascinating facts about Burma/Myanmar-the country, its people, culture, and politics. It‘s a good, quick read to check off a challenge prompt

BarbaraBB I am intrigued by the cover! 3y
DGRachel @BarbaraBB I picked it because it‘s a graphic novel and I hoped that would make it easier or at least faster to get through. ☺️ 3y
Librarybelle Nice choice! 3y
vivastory I've never read him, but I recently added a couple of Delisle's books to my TBR. This one sounded esp. intriguing to me 3y

I like how cultural details are thrown into the everyday experiences.

Testing out the new deck umbrella and mosquito netting since just putting mosquito repelling plants on the deck is not enough protection. 😬

It was great to spend time with Guy and his family again, this time in Burma/Malaya. His wife works for Doctors Without Borders, so he spends his time taking care of their son and working from home. Like his previous “travel” diaries, you get to see the big and small things he experiences and learns in his time there. Filled with curiosity, sadness, & humor, there‘s a lot to like here, as always with his work.
Book 8 of the #readathon #deweyapril

Readerann Yet another for the stack. 😁Looks like you had a great Readathon! I loved the distraction and ‘unplugging‘ for the day. 5y

In addition to being interesting and informative, the author has excellent and funny insights on parenting that I both did not recall from my pre-parent reading and MUCH prefer to his actual books on parenting.

LitsyGetsGraphic Guy Delisle is my favorite ❤️ 6y
melissajayne I‘m still traveling like the baby. 6y
UrsulaMonarch @LitsyGetsGraphic I really love his travel memoirs! (If one can call them that) 6y
UrsulaMonarch @melissajayne 😂 now that I have babies, I just don't travel! 6y

I'm very much enjoying Guy Delisle's graphic novels covering the various countries he has lived in with his partner, an administrator for Doctors Without Borders. Without becoming preachy, he covers a lot of territory: from the personal (the difficulty of being a work/stay at home dad or the problem finding a park) to the larger issues (political instability, troubled lives of local population, or the role of NGOs). Looking forward to next two!

Not glamorous, but a truly accurate photo of how I spend every bedtime. I absolutely cannot sleep if I don't #readinbed for at least a few moments before sleep, no matter how late it is (I've been known to read after dropping into bed at 2 am!)

Creature of habit bed routine:
• 2 pillows ✅
• minimum of 2 books (but frequently more) ✅
• Kindle ✅
• water bottle ✅
• minimum of 1 cat ✅

#photoadaynov16

WordWaller I always have more than 1 book too! Even if I don't actually open any haha 8y
Texreader Looks like your cat is pouting. That's what mine does if she isn't getting enough attention. 😻 8y
Hooked_on_books Totally the same way. Even if I only read a paragraph, I have to read before falling asleep. 8y

Gleefulreader @WordWaller it is a pretty funny compulsion to carry 2+ books to bed when I know I'll only read a chapter or two, but I can't help myself :) 8y
rubyslippersreads I can't sleep without reading first and without at least one cat. 😸❤️📚 8y
Gleefulreader @Hooked__on__books glad to know it is not just me! It is definitely my way of unwinding. Some people meditate, I read 😊 8y
Gleefulreader @Texreader she does, doesn't she? She's the oldest (and most dominant) cat of our three. She starts her evening between Mr and I for pets and snuggles and then always disappears to foot of bed for sleep time (and to smack boy cat if he thinks about coming to sleep on bed. She is... proprietary.) She, too, has her routines ;) 8y
Texreader Love that. I'd let mine sleep with me if I didn't think she'd be in my face all night. What a courteous sweet cat you have especially warding off the other cat. Haha!! 8y
Desha Awesome! ❤️📚 8y
saresmoore SAME HERE! I've been reading in bed since I learned to read! I do three pillows, though. I call the third one my "queen pillow". ??? 8y
