The Lost History of Dreams
The Lost History of Dreams: A Novel | Kris Waldherr
12 posts | 11 read | 39 to read
A post-mortem photographer unearths dark secrets of the past that may hold the key to his future, in this captivating debut novel in the gothic tradition of Wuthering Heights and The Thirteenth Tale. All love stories are ghost stories in disguise. When famed Byronesque poet Hugh de Bonne is discovered dead of a heart attack in his bath one morning, his cousin Robert Highstead, a historian turned post-mortem photographer, is charged with a simple task: transport Hughs remains for burial in a chapel. This chapel, a stained glass folly set on the moors of Shropshire, was built by de Bonne sixteen years earlier to house the remains of his beloved wife and muse, Ada. Since then, the chapel has been locked and abandoned, a pilgrimage site for the rabid fans of de Bonnes last book, The Lost History of Dreams. However, Adas grief-stricken niece refuses to open the glass chapel for Robert unless he agrees to her bargain: before he can lay Hugh to rest, Robert must record Isabelles story of Ada and Hughs ill-fated marriage over the course of five nights. As the mystery of Ada and Hughs relationship unfolds, so does the secret behind Roberts own marriageincluding that of his fragile wife, Sida, who has not been the same since the tragic accident three years ago, and the origins of his own morbid profession that has him seeing things he shouldntthings from beyond the grave. Kris Waldherr effortlessly spins a sweeping and atmospheric gothic mystery about love and loss that blurs the line between the past and the present, truth and fiction, and ultimately, life and death.

Thank you so much @sharread for my #CreepyChristmasSwap gift! I‘m not going to lie; I might have finished the fudge back when you first sent it to me. You told me to open it and look for the “white hat” gift and I really was going to freeze it to save for tonight, but I just couldn‘t. Tasty!!! These books all look so great! I think I might try the tagged book first. Thank you, thank you!!!

For me there was a perfect amount of gore, suspense and creepy things going on. #20in4 #BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks @Andrew65

While this one wasn‘t my favorite, I do think if you enjoy gothic historical fiction you‘ll enjoy it. It‘s perfect for this time of year when you‘re cozied up by the fireplace. Check out my full review: https://amysbookreviews.com/2021/01/17/the-lost-history-of-dreams-by-kris-waldhe...

This was was just ok for me. I kept putting it down to read other things. Maybe the mood was a little too melancholy or just too many ghosts and not enough living characters, but it was entertaining but fell a bit flat. #24b4monday

I really enjoyed this Gothic-inspired mystery/ghost/love story! The plot contains some genuine surprises and the characters feel real and complicated. I love the set up, premise and the setting! I think this would be a lot of fun for book clubs because I definitely want to talk about this one!! My only complaint? I didn‘t want it to end!! #NetGalley

A nearly perfect read: a snaky plot, thorny characters nesteld in compelling narrative & resonant themes. All love stories are ghost stories, we'll read more than once in this book, but this novel is an imagining of the life of a literary genius touched with the insistent naming of the woman behind such a figure. It's tortured emotions stretched taut to the point of madness and deft, quiet moments of revelation that hummed in the heart.

One of the best things about being an author is getting to read upcoming books in advance & say nice things about the ones I enjoy. Just made this blurb official today: "THE LOST HISTORY OF DREAMS is a dark, shimmering gem of a novel, glittering with love lost, secrets kept, and long-buried truths revealed. Wonder, memory, death and passion haunt every page of Kris Waldherr's powerhouse Gothic debut."
