The Woman in the Dark
The Woman in the Dark | Vanessa Savage
In the vein of The Couple Next Door, a debut psychological thriller about a woman who moves with her family to the gothic seaside house where her husband grew up--and where 15 years ago another family was brutally slaughtered. Sarah and Patrick are happy. But after her mother's death, Sarah spirals into depression and overdoses on sleeping pills. While Sarah claims it was an accident, her teenage children aren't so sure. Patrick decides they all need a fresh start and he knows just the place, since the idyllic family home where he was raised has recently come up for sale. There's only one catch: for the past fifteen years, it has become infamous as the "Murder House", standing empty after a family was stabbed to death within its walls. Patrick believes they can bring the house back to its former glory, so Sarah, uprooted from everything she knows, pours her energy into painting, gardening, and giving the rotting old structure the warmth of home. But with locals hinting that the house is haunted, the news that the murderer has been paroled, strange writing on the walls, and creepy "gifts" arriving on the doorstep at odd hours, Sarah can't shake the feeling that something just isn't right. Not with the house, not with the town, or even with her own, loving husband--whose stories about his perfect childhood suddenly aren't adding up. Can Sarah uncover the secrets of the Murder House before another family is destroyed?

I'm gonna say this is like The Shining meets The Yellow Wallpaper. At least so far. I'm sure there are unexpected twists ahead though

ShyBookOwl Update: Amityville horror vibes too!! 1y
FlowerFairy Have had this one on Mount TBR for ages. Sounds like I need to move it up. 1y

Um. No. I almost gave it a so-so rating because I did read the whole thing, but I was either incredulous or annoyed and by the end I really, really wanted to chuck the book across the room. Sarah and her husband Patrick and their teenage children Mia and Joe move to Patrick‘s childhood home on the Welsh seaside. It was the scene of a horrible triple murder years ago. There‘s clearly some bad energy but WHO CARES? Just, yuck.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Pretty photo though!! 3y
kplovesbooks It was a strange one for sure. Didn't really add up. 🤷 3y
TheLudicReader @kplovesbooks it just felt like she chucked every single thing she could at the story and it was soooo frustrating. 3y
kplovesbooks @TheLudicReader So true! Like what the hell was that mess about the teenage daughter and that weird man on the beach?!? It had nothing to do with anything! 3y

Finished this today while I was cleaning the house and working on a craft project. It was a decent story. I found my attention drifting some times but it was a good enough story for me to finish. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Between a pick and a so so. It was good but just dragged on a bit in the middle, the ending was clever. No picture as I deleted the book first
This was an interesting story but it did seem to drag in the middle. I found myself wanting to skip to the end. There was lots of mystery and intrigue in the story. The ending was really good though, some brilliantly clever twists though I did figure some things out. A good thriller

How is it possible for a main character to be used up and abused and still be unlikable? Normally I can get behind an underdog character, I get excited to see her finally kickass but eh... she never does. The over story isn't awful though.

Alrighty, I'll give it a 3.75 star rating. While this is filled to the brim of every overused trope, plot device and twists - chock full!! - those pages were turning quickly. I burned through this one and wanted to find out how it ended, even though I knew already. It was a good book club book but I've got to be done for a long, long time with the thriller/suspense books! 😊😊

I'm on page 58 (of 345) and I have a strong suspicion I know exactly how this is going to go. I need to put those thoughts aside and just read it though. Give it a chance, give it room to breathe. Please don't be as predictable as I think I see it being. 🙏

I read 110 pages of the book but NOTHING WAS HAPPENING. It was the slowest 110 pages. I‘m not sure if the story picked up after I stopped reading, but I needed SOME excitement to want to keep reading.

This one was difficult to rate for me. On one hand, the plot was good & it was suitably dark, but the MC was frustrating. 3.5 🌟(a pick but with reservations).

TW: psychological abuse, physical abuse, & sexual assault.

Thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Little Brown Book Group / Sphere, for the opportunity to review an ARC.
