George Washington's Secret Six: The Spy Ring That Saved the American Revolution
George Washington's Secret Six: The Spy Ring That Saved the American Revolution | Brian Kilmeade
"As a Long Islander endlessly fascinated by events that happened in a place I call home, I hope with this book to give the secret six the credit they didn't get in life. The Culper spies represent all the patriotic Americans who give so much for their country but, because of the nature of their work, will not or cannot take a bow or even talk about their missions." --Brian Kilmeade When General George Washington beat a hasty retreat from New York City in August 1776, many thought the American Revolution might soon be over. Instead, Washington rallied--thanks in large part to a little-known, top-secret group called the Culper Spy Ring. Washington realized that he couldn't beat the British with military might, so he recruited a sophisticated and deeply secretive intelligence network to infiltrate New York. So carefully guarded were the members' identities that one spy's name was not uncovered until the twentieth century, and one remains unknown today. But by now, historians have discovered enough information about the ring's activities to piece together evidence that these six individuals turned the tide of the war. Drawing on extensive research, Brian Kilmeade and Don Yaeger have painted compelling portraits of George Washington's secret six: - Robert Townsend, the reserved merchant and reporter who headed the Culper Ring, keeping his identity secret even from Washington; - Austin Roe, the tavern keeper who risked his employment and his life in order to protect the mission; - Caleb Brewster, the brash young longshoreman who loved baiting the British and agreed to ferry messages between Connecticut and New York; - Abraham Woodhull, the curmudgeonly (and surprisingly nervous) Long Island bachelor with business and family excuses for traveling to Manhattan; - James Rivington, the owner of a posh coffeehouse and print shop where high-ranking British officers gossiped about secret operations; - Agent 355, a woman whose identity remains unknown but who seems to have used her wit and charm to coax officers to share vital secrets. In George Washington's Secret Six, Townsend and his fellow spies finally receive their due, taking their place among the pantheon of heroes of the American Revolution.

This is the true story of the anonymous spies who helped win the Revolutionary War. Brian Kilmeade and Don Yaeger finally give Townsend and his fellow spies proper due, telling the fascinating story of how they passed information to George Washington that turned the tide of the war. They included a longshoreman, bartender, newspaper editor, housewife, tailor, and femme fatale. The Culper Spy Ring used sophisticated tactics to subvert the British.

EadieB Based on previously unpublished research, George Washington's Secret Six is a gripping history of these amazing, anonymous Patriots who risked their lives for our freedom. This is a most interesting book with a good history lesson. If you love history, you will love the stories contained in this book. #GeorgeWashingtonsSecretSix #BrianKilmeade #BookSpinBingo 3y
Butterfinger I read Alexander Rose's book. It was also about the Culper Ring. If you have Netflix, Turn is one of my favorite dramas. 3y

I made a huge mistake in listening to this on audio. The narrator/author made made me cringe through the whole thing. It seemed much more historical fiction vs nonfiction, especially with the made up conversations and the line where Washington considered something shady. The topic seemed so great, but the execution wasn‘t. I do want to read a better book on this topic though! #audiobook

IamIamIam Too bad because it seems really interesting! Fun fact: The Washington Spy Trail is a local historical run along the north shore of Long Island! They've got markers on a number of roads out here and it starts on the east end. 👌 6y

It took a few chapters to get into this one, but once I had the people down I read right through. I thought it very well researched and not knowing the identity Agent 355 is killing me. 😣

Lcsmcat I liked this one too. My mom gave it to me, and I went in with no expectations and ended up loving it. 6y

elawsan @BekahB it's great, but there are scenes in the 2nd season that might be scarring... just saying. Ash vs Evil Dead and Outlander are the only reason we have Stars. 8y
Sydsavvy The Godfather!!!! Yes! 8y
Sydsavvy And what perfect handwriting! 8y
elawsan @Sydsavvy 😊 Thank you. The secret to the handwriting is the fancy calligraphy pen. 😉 8y
Sydsavvy Lol that secret didn't rub off on me when I tried it. 😂 oh well🍀 8y
Mariposa_Bookworm Not only do I love that you too have a cat named Binx, but also one named Chicken Nuggets. Awesome! 8y
elawsan @Mariposa_Bookworm Thanks! Binx is a black cat (a very small tuft of white) and he was named after the cat in Hocus Pocus. Cheron, Binx's brother, started out as ours but is now my daughter's. Mostly because of his sweet temperament. Cheron ferries souls across the river Styx in Dante's Inferno. Chicken is actually my granddaughter's. She named him when she was a couple years old. He's older (about 5) and a grump. The vets love his name too. 😅 8y
Mariposa_Bookworm @elawsan I love animals and it took me awhile to become a cat mom. We rescued our Binx last august and he passed away in March of this year. I miss him everyday and eventually will open my arms and heart to another kitty...or two.💕🐾 8y
elawsan @Mariposa_Bookworm that's the hard part of having fur babies 😔. All I can say is that the good outweighs the heartache. 8y
readordierachel Oldboy is gooood. 8y
elawsan @ReadOrDieRachel It's so twisted. I think that's part of why I like it 8y

monkeygirlsmama Best. Names. Ever. 😁 8y
elawsan @thecomfykitchen @monkeygirlsmama Thank you! I wish I could take some of the credit, but those names were all my wife, my daughter, and my granddaughter. They're hilarious! 8y

The imaginary conversations are proving to be just too unbearable. I feel like I understand the author's need to captivate with dialogue but it just feels like historical fiction that is based on factual information?

This book was fascinating and gave me insight into a part of our early history that I didn't know about. Everyone hears about Nathan Hale, but he, while brave and well meaning, he didn't accomplish anything, where these six did so much. I only wish we knew who Agent 355 was and whether she escaped after she was captured. #LitsyAtoZ #letterG

So far, it is an insightful look into Washington's spy ring . . . I love the credit paid to archivists who, over time, have identified members of the ring . . . Love to my LIS family 📚🙌🏽

Seems like a surprising amount of self-awareness from a Fox News guy. Unless the other author is responsible for this.

I feel like they wanted to write historical fiction, but then did all this research and wanted credit for serious non-fiction. How well this works out is yet to be seen

Sydsavvy Lol it sold a lot of books. I'm thinking it might be a good strategy! But I'm with you. 8y
AlleyChen So far I'm thinking it *could* be a good strategy, in someone else's hands... 8y

Amateurish. Dumb-downed. Drivel. Please skip this non-academic look into the Culper Ring and find a researched book into the spy ring that helped keep British forces chasing their tales in Manhattan and allowing the Revolutionary War to be won elsewhere.
