Upstarts: Uber, Airbnb, and the Battle for the New Silicon Valley
Upstarts: Uber, Airbnb, and the Battle for the New Silicon Valley | Brad Stone
8 posts | 5 read | 15 to read
ONE OF AMAZON'S BEST BOOKS OF 2017 A look deep inside the new Silicon Valley, from the New York Times bestselling author of The Everything Store. Ten years ago, the idea of getting into a stranger's car, or walking into a stranger's home, would have seemed bizarre and dangerous--yet today it is as common as ordering a book online. Companies like Uber and Airbnb have redefined the way we live. And while they have become pervasive in our day-to-day lives, they are not universally celebrated. They are the result of a generation of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs who used technology to upend convention and disrupt entire industries. Led by Travis Kalanick of Uber and Brian Chesky of Airbnb, these are the upstarts, founders with an overabundance of self-confidence and a limitless drive that pushed them to rewrite the rules, better and sometimes for worse. Now with a new epilogue and updated throughout, The Upstarts takes us deep into the origins--and controversy--of these new titans of business.

#NoFemmeber #NonFictionNovember My son recommended this book to me. It‘s about the #creator(s) of Uber and Airbnb two out of the box thinkers who have revolutionized the way we travel and view lodging 🧭 🧳 🚘🏠

Megabooks Sounds interesting! I just finished Bad Blood about Theranos last month and read Disrupted earlier this year. Silicon Valley has a lot of fascinating stories to tell. 6y
erzascarletbookgasm Amazing out-of-the-box thinkers. Airbnb was cerrtainly bad news for hotels and forced them to rethink their strategies. 6y
Cinfhen I know! It‘s amazing the amount of innovations coming from these young renegades @Megabooks Definitely makes for good stories 6y

Cinfhen They have created game-changers @erzascarletbookgasm Taxi drivers in NY are losing millions of dollars too 6y
Megabooks @Cinfhen @erzascarletbookgasm when I was in Vegas last year and took a cab to the airport, the driver was rolling down the window and verbally harassing Uber drivers. 😬 6y
TrishB Clever folks 👍🏻 6y
Cinfhen Oh God @Megabooks it‘s really going to escalate one day 😲and they are beyond clever @TrishB it‘s pretty amazing. My daughter has a bestie from HS, really cool guy but not so book smart anyhow he was named 10 under 30 to watch on Forbes list of young entrepreneurs, last year. He developed an app that has already generated millions upon millions of dollars. (edited) 6y
Billypar It is kind of crazy how quickly these companies have become just as commonly relied upon as their traditional counterparts. And that's amazing that your daughter witnessed it happen to her friend! 6y

The Upstarts. For people who are interested in learning about the founding and growth of Uber and Airbnb, this is a great start that's engaging and informative. Seeing as the sharing economy doesn't show any signs of slowing down, it's a very interesting look at how quickly technology changes in this area.

I'm HUGELY enjoying this. Best anecdotes so far involve a German engineers disbelief at an airbnb hq celebration for *a dogs birthday* and the fact that Uber is called Uber because that it's the founder's favorite word for what is cool: as in, this cup of coffee is *so uber.* & just like the everything store, I'm totally wowed by stone's reporting.

Wellreadtraveler Never seen this book, but looks interesting, something my hubby might like. 7y

No #oranges or other fruit in my book shelf so I guess I'll have to settle for some orange spines. #17rainbowbooks

Malisa I absolutely love The Hidden Oracle ❤ 7y
LibrarianRyan @Malisa not gotten around to it yet but I probably will this summer. Did you have the read the series before? 7y
Malisa @LibrarianRyan Yes! It's very important to read the series before it, the book is like a continuation of the previous series. 7y

LibrarianRyan Kind of bummer. After percy I read the Red pyramid and didn't like it so I haven't picked up anything since. I own them just not read them. Thanks. 7y
Malisa @LibrarianRyan He also has a series about Norse mythology, if you might be interested in that. And no problem 😁 7y
LibrarianRyan @Malisa I have his norse mythology series as well. Like I said just have to get back into them. 7y
NovelGirl82 Trials of Apollo will definitely take you back in to PJO/HOO world, if you liked those. I'm really enjoying the Norse Mythology series, as well. It seems much more like Percy than the Red Pyramid series did. 7y

#TBRtemptation post! Well, the subtitle suggests quite specifically what this book's all about. You know how we say the world's changed so much in the last 10 years? This book attempts to explain part of that observation. We can now get into a stranger's car or walk into a stranger's house without being bizarre, & paying to do so. The latest crop of young SV leaders sidestep legal & ethical bounds to mold a new culture. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

saguarosally You could do that before. It was called a bed & breakfast or a taxi. Also, pouring money into changing laws and ethical norms doesn't make it acceptable. I have a feeling I better prepare for rage reading this book. 7y
