Land of Steady Habits
Land of Steady Habits | Ted Thompson
7 posts | 4 read | 7 to read
"This assured, compassionate first novel channels the suburban angsty of Updike and Cheever...with pitch-perfect prose and endearingly melancholy characters."--Booklist (Starred Review) Anders Hill, entering his early sixties and seemingly ensconced in the "land of steady habits"--a nickname for the affluent, morally strict hamlets of Connecticut that dot his commuter rail line--abandons his career and family for a new condo and a new life. Stripped of the comforts of his previous identity, Anders turns up at a holiday party full of his ex-wife's friends and is suprised to find that the very world he rejected may be one he needs. Thus Anders embarks on a clumsy, hilarious, and heartbreaking journey to reconcile his past with his present. Like the early work of John Updike, Ted Thompson's first novel finely observes a man in deep conflict with his community. With compassion for its characters and fresh insight into the American tradition of the "suburban narrative," THE LAND OF STEADY HABITS introduces an auspicious talent.

‘Coming-of-age can happen at the strangest times. Into his sixties and newly retired, Anders decides he‘s had enough of steady habits..‘

The basis for one of my favorite Netflix movies. A little sad, often humorous, this was a pretty good story.

Anders, 60-ish milquetoast man, has just asked his wife for a divorce.
All hell breaks loose.
Insightful commentary on cultural pretenses, parental expectations, and living the dream.
Loved it.

Thanks @Texreader for the stroll down memory lane. This was my first post 2 1/2 years ago. Had no idea how to post photos. I was so surprised to see who liked my first post. Thanks to @MrBook & @jdtchicago for being encouraging. By the way, I read this well before the movie was made. I liked the book so much I wrote a note to the author and he was very gracious and thankful that I‘d written. Just a reminder to shower an author you like with love.

MrBook You‘re absolutely magnificent, and we‘re so glad you‘re still here and active 🤗🤗🤗. The Littens who don‘t follow you are missing out. 😎👍🏻👍🏻 6y
Suet624 @MrBook You are too kind. Thank you for your kind words and thank you for all you do to keep Litsy so vibrant. 6y

This was a terrific story. I have no idea how a young man could write so accurately from an older man's perspective.
