The Warlow Experiment
The Warlow Experiment | Alix Nathan

An utterly transporting and original historical novel about an 18th century experiment in personal isolation that yields unexpected--and deeply, shatteringly human--results. "The best kind of historical fiction... [Alix Nathan] is an original, with a virtuoso touch." --Hilary Mantel Albert Powyss lives in a large estate in the Welsh Marches, with enough time and income to pursue a gentleman's fashionable investigations and experiments in the field of botany. But he longs to make his mark in the field of behavioral sciences--something consequential enough to present to the Royal Society in London. He hits on a radical experiment in isolation: For seven years a subject will inhabit three rooms in the basement of the manor house, fitted out with books, paintings, tapestries and even a chamber organ. Healthy meals will arrive thrice daily via a dumbwaiter. The solitude will be totally unrelieved by any social contact whatsoever; the subject will keep a diary of his daily thoughts and actions. The pay: fifty pounds per annum, for life. Only one man is desperate to apply for the job: John Warlow, a semi-literate laborer with a wife and six children to provide for. The experiment, a classic Enlightenment exercise gone more than a little mad, will have unforeseen consequences for all included.

The ratings on Goodreads are quite low for this one so I went in with low expectations that it would be for me. But I couldn't stop reading this strange but compelling book! The consequences for many more than just Warlow were significant and made for a book I couldn't put down.

This one doesn't have outstanding reviews, but so far it's been okay. Hope it holds up or my February reading will be all duds. (Guess it's hard to follow after The Dutch House. 😊)

Has anyone read it??

catiewithac It‘s a weird book, but I liked it 4y

Pet peeve: when you buy a used book and it comes in as an ARC. It literally says on the cover NOT for sale. Like, I don‘t understand...

Penny_LiteraryHoarders Oooo those aren't supposed to be for sale! 🤨 4y

This historical fiction novel had a very gothic feel to it in both subject matter & the quality of the writing. In fact at times I felt like I was reading a much older book. A rich armchair scientist locks a poor labourer in a lavishly appointed cellar to see what happens. Unsurprisingly it doesn't end well. There are a lot of themes to unpack here - it would make a great book club read. Disturbing, sad, fascinating and thought provoking.

batsy Great review! And I'm so glad to hear it's a good read—I bought this because it sounds fascinating, but maybe mainly because of the cover 😬 4y

Historical fiction: An experiment to determine the effects isolation would have on a person. I like the part about “unlimited” books. Don‘t know about the toe and fingernails (but mine break easily anyway). I‘m about to start this library book with this interesting premise.

charl08 This is based on a real case, or am I mixing it up with another book? 4y
arubabookwoman @charl08 Haven‘t read the author‘s note at the end yet, but I believe it is based on a real case. (edited) 4y

The 18th century is known as the Age of Reason, but what happens when an amateur “scientist” decides to test the limits of man‘s solitude? That is the premise of this dark historical novel. While France erupts into revolution and Tom Paine‘s writings stir discontent among laborers, an English gentleman swaps his experiments with plants for one with a human. Darkness and violence ensues. It‘s an odd book for an odd reader.

batsy I bought this recently! I like your last sentence 😆 #OddReadersUnite 5y

I really am into the premise and love the cover for this one, but the story fell a little short for me. I didn‘t realize that the inspiration was from an old advert that the author saw, which is very cool.

I don‘t usually read historical fiction, but this novel about a voluntary seven year isolation experiment sounds like the psychological terror that I‘m into.

Just got this from Book Depository on the recommendation of Simon Savidge over at Savidge Reads on YouTube! It‘s not coming out in the US until August, and he made it sound so intriguing I just couldn‘t wait. That cover! Those end pages!

Penny_LiteraryHoarders Yes! It was because of Simon I sought this one out! 😉 4y
