Fight Like a Girl
Fight Like a Girl: 50 Feminists Who Changed the World | Laura Barcella
11 posts | 6 read | 12 to read
Nearly every day there's another news story, think piece, or pop cultural anecdote related to feminism and women's rights. Conversations around consent, equal pay, access to contraception, and a host of other issues are foremost topics of conversation in American media. And today's teens are encountering these issues from a different perspective than any generation has before-but what's often missing from the current discussion is an understanding of how we've gotten to this place. Fight Like a Girl introduces readers to the history of feminist activism in the U.S. in an effort to celebrate those who paved the way and draw attention to those who are working hard to further the feminist cause today.

#WinterWonderland Day 21: #TryToRemember is our theme as girlfriends now that I am in Manila for the Christmas holidays. We have been friends for over 30 years now and counting. We were the original Sex and The City even before the show came out (we are missing another girlfriend based in Jersey City now). And yes, we fight like a girl.

whimsy Oooh is this an SM mall? *squints* (maligayang pasko!) 6y
GatheringBooks @whimsy a litsy pinoy! i love! yes, my family and i are staying in one of the condo units near moa. i have asked friends to just meet me there as i don‘t feel like confronting the manila traffic head-on. 😘🧚🏼‍♀️ Maligayang Pasko at Mapayapang Bagong Taon! 6y
whimsy @GatheringBooks Indeed, kumusta? 😀 Good thinking and good location! I'm over to the north so MOA sounds like a world away ahaha. I visit when the bookfair is in town. But that mall has like, four bookstores (and Lil Orbits donuts) so it's a win 😀 6y

I'm so excited about next month's box! Do any of you do Owlcrate?

#IsItMayYet

Readergrrl I never have, but I‘ve been thinking of it! 7y
Traci1 @Readergrrl I've only gotten one, but it was great. 7y
jenmoody23 I just signed my daughter up so I‘ll get to read the books too. My son gets the jr box. 7y

Traci1 @jenmoody23 my daughter isn't all that interested in most of the books (she's very picky), but I gave her some of the goodies out of the one I got. She gets a artsy box instead. 7y
jenmoody23 @Traci1 The artsy box sounds cool. Both of my kids love getting boxes for themselves, but when I showed my daughter the teaser for next month she got scared. She hates super heroes and said it better not be Wonder Woman. 🤣 7y
Traci1 @jenmoody23 it's not Wonder Woman. I was worried about that too from the graphic. I am not a big fan of superheroes...even wonder woman. Their clue was something about a Viking-inspired tale. It sounds fantastic. 7y
Traci1 @jenmoody23 the one my daughter gets is called Paletteful Pack or something like that. I like it because shipping is included in the cost. She's only gotten one, but she loved it. 7y
leahrosereads I'm so excited for this box! I like trying to guess the book before the box gets here and contemplating what type of goodies will be in it. Looking forward to this one for sure! 7y
LibrarianRyan Yep. And for future reference I post spoilers under 7y
LibrarianRyan I'm pretty sure I know next months book. And no, not Wonder Woman. Too old. @jenmoody23 7y
Traci1 @leahroserng I'm pretty confident about what book it is, and it's one I already had on my wishlist. Can't wait for May. ☺ 7y
Traci1 @LibrarianRyan oh that's a good idea about the spoiler posts. 7y
LibrarianRyan @Traci1 yes, and another girl posts them under the book OWLS. But we both use a spoiler cover. Please do the same. Lizpixie gets her box really late because she's an Aussie and we try to not spoiler it for her. 7y
Traci1 @LibrarianRyan I probably wouldn't post anything til well into the next month anyway. I actually was a tad worried about posting just the graphic here in case some people really really like to be surprised about what's in the box and don't even want clues or things. 7y
Traci1 And by next month I mean like mid-june for May's. 7y
leahrosereads @Traci1 Yep yep! I think I've got May's picked as well! I haven't heard of it but it sounds amazing so I'm pretty excited. 7y

Mehso-so

I am glad that I bought this book and read it. It summarizes the life & work of 50 amazing women everyone should at least heard of. I just wish the chapters would have been longer. That why it was hard to remember the details from the previous ones and they all kinda blurred together. Maybe more pages or only 25 women would have been better. Queer There and Everywhere had 23 people and it worked way better. #feminism #queer #review

#riotgrams day 6 #currentreads -- A few quick reads I am trying to get through so I can return some books to the library. @Jinjer I almost put the dot to dot thing in your package but the numbers are soooo small I hardly have the patience and eye sight to do it myself, lol I bought mechanical pencils with good erasers to do it with to be extra careful. 📚📚❤❤

Jinjer Hahaha too funny about the dot to dot! Is that like a connect the dots or something? 8y
Mimi28 @jinjer Yes! The end results look soo cool but the numbers are extremely small and go up to over 500 on one page, and the book is already tiny so it's more like half a page, lol 8y

Some more of my favorites from yesterday. #womensmarch #womensmarchsf I wish I had got a pic of the other side of the fight like a girl one. It was all great fictional heroines including Hermione and Leia Organa!

Late #funfridayphoto Here is the book case at the head/foot ( I switch sides) of my bed. It was a lot messier when my head was down there but now I moved a lot of books to an accessible box under my bed near where my head is now. Here is Stormy, wondering what I am doing and if I am about to lay down and she'll have to move, lol 😻😻📚📚❤❤❤#catsoflitsy #petsoflitsy

"Feminism doesn't mean subscribing to a certain magazine or marching on the Mall three times a year. It doesn't mean listening to one particular kind of music, or dating one particular kind of person, or reading one particular kind of book, or forcing yourself not to hate-watch The Bachelorette. Your feminism can be self-defined."

I haven't read this book yet, but today reminded me to bump it higher in my tbr list and recommend it to my students. @BookishFeminist , you'll be proud. I love teaching middle school, but sometimes my job requires me to give tough, honest lessons. While chatting sports with kids, one student thought he was being clever by saying one was his favorite girls' team. This quote is what I told him. His shocked face read he'd never use that joke again.

beaniebankbeth I want to make it clear that this kid is wonderfully kind and polite, and that he honestly didn't know how much jokes like that hurt until he saw the stone cold look on my face, the face of a teacher who most of the jokes around and geeks out with students while showing that punctuation is actually intriguing stuff! Seriously, it is. 8y
BookishFeminist 😯 i bet he won't do that again! That drives me nuts, too. Gotten into legitimate arguments over it. With adults. 8y
