This is an absolutely fantastic collection of stories. Loved each and every one so much, but if I had to pick a couple of favs they would be Né łe and The Boys Who Became Hummingbirds. I highly recommend everyone checking this collection out if you're a lover of sci-fi, speculative fiction, or short stories.

In the Dream House: A Memoir | Carmen Maria Machado
Pickpick

This is a memoir showing domestic abuse in a queer relationship. The author describes her trauma in poetic prose that is so freaking haunting. Every aspect of her story resonated so deeply with me, and there's a reminder here that being queer doesn't make you good or bad. It just makes you queer, and you're able to fall for the same mistakes that anyone else could - include falling in love with a monster and staying in an abusive relationship.

AmyG I flew through this book. Sadly, parts were familiar and one doesn‘t need to be queer to recognize this. It was so good. 3y

What a fantastic collection of short fiction! These stories were disturbing in the best possible way. Every single one had me so intrigued and horrified, "flipping" the pages of my e-reader so freaking fast. If I had to pick favorites, it'd be Imitate and Dead America. Oh boy were those two just the pinnacle of creepy!

This is an absolutely fantastic book. The information that the author shares with the reader is incredibly digestible and accessible, which I really appreciate. I chose to consume this via audio (for the most part), and I definitely recommend it.

I've read where this is a lot of people's favorite of the 3 books currently, and I can understand why. For me, this setting was everything! The Moors was eerie and dark and just what you expect from every horror movie ever. I think it's easily my favorite portal world so far (though I think I'd love The Halls of the Dead just as much if we ever get to see that world fully).

I loved the characters and their relationships with each other.

Every Heart a Doorway | Seanan McGuire

No matter how many times I read this story, I always discover something new. This time it was all the foreshadowing. Every Heart a Doorway is brilliant, beautiful, and my favorite of the series (I think). The characters are some of my favorite in any fantasy (YA or otherwise). They're written so exceptionally well. Each character feels important to the story, and when there's under 200 pages, that's an impressive feat!

This was a beautiful story told in verse and in two POVs that were incredibly distinct. I loved the characters, all their flaws and how their lives were interwoven. But I sometimes felt things happened a little too slowly, or that the pacing was just a bit off.

Tender Is the Flesh | Agustina Bazterrica

This was easily one of the most horrifying, disturbing novels I've ever read. It starts slow and didn't answer one of the biggest questions I had, but the premise had me turning pages so freaking fast. I just had to know what happened. This is definitely not for the faint of heart, and with how graphic it is, I'm so very grateful for my aphantasia.

Trigger warnings for practically everything you can think of.

⭐⭐⭐⭐.5

What another absolutely exceptional story! I thoroughly enjoyed following Chih (a non-binary cleric) on this journey filled with a sapphic slow-burn love story, mammoths, and a tiger queen.

While I enjoyed this book, it didn't hit me in the feels nearly as much as the first one. I'll still 100% continue picking anything and everything up by this author. The writing is fantastic, and I cannot wait to see what Nghi Vo writes next!

I feel like I'm always saying it, but this right here, is why I love novellas so much. In 100 pages (sometimes a little more) I find myself running the gambit of emotions. Anger, hurt, joy, sorrow. This book made me feel them all and so much more, and I loved every moment.

Cute, short holiday stories. I liked the first 2 but not the last one (maybe because I work with attorneys). If you're looking for a quickie to finish off your reading challenge for the year, maybe pick this one up!

An absolutely vital read for anyone who wants to learn more about intersectional feminism. Every one of these essays was incredibly important. I was able to learn so much, while also noting areas that I want to research more of and to find other books that go further in depth.

This is the first volume in the series that hasn't gotten a 5 star from me, and it's because it's the first with very little Shiva and Teacher interactions. I know this was necessary to progress the story. Of course, I now have even more questions with everything that happened in this volume, and that ending! I need volume 10 ASAP!

Oh look, another 5 star in this series! This was just an absolutely wonderfully gut wrenchingly sad volume. I absolutely needed tissues for it, and I just don't know what's going to happen in the next one. But I don't think I'm ready emotionally to find out!

I just keep giving these books 5 stars, but it's always so deserved! This volume was one giant conflict that kept going all the way to the very end. Teacher's choices on how to protect Shiva was heartbreaking, but it all felt incredibly necessary. I have no idea what's going to happen because of course instead of a resolution, we got a cliffhanger! Can't wait to dive into volume 8!

Look at Cardan trying to out charm Charming! He's so oddly pleasant here, I don't know what to make of it! These stories were genuinely so fun to read, and Cardan is my favorite character in this world, so I'm absolutely here for any stories surrounding him. Add in the stunning art of Rovina Cai that brought each story to life, and you have just a delightfully fun read.

A fun, guaranteed enjoyable read! Olive and Ethan were fun to follow and the setting was just perfect (especially since it's winter)! Like most romances, there's the miscommunication trope, but here, it works. And works well. Easily my favorite Christina Lauren!

So close to being a five star read for me! I loved almost everything about this. The world building was rich and so very fascinating, filled with myths and folklore, and of course, one of my favorite settings - a dark, magical forest. I loved the characters. They were wonderfully flawed. The story was filled with whimsy and the writing was flowery in the best ways.

This one started off slow, fair warning. It took around 120 pages to get interesting, and honestly, that's just too many pages to build a character for me. After that though, this book really took off. Unfortunately, I didn't like most aspects of it. While I'm not an avid reader of the thriller/mystery genres, I was able to guess most every twist, without trying, and that always really bums me out. I prefer to be shocked, and I just wasn't here.

This was so freaking weird! Did I enjoy it? Heck yah! Could I even try to explain how or what this is about? Not coherently. And honestly that's OK (to me). The writing was good, the characters were fascinating, and the story was odd and complex. Highly recommend!

This was a cute, corny holiday story! I'm not much for steamy scenes and one of these was just a tad too over the top for my liking. But the characters were fun, the chemistry didn't feel forced, and the book was short enough that nothing felt overly drawn out.

Teacher and Shiva just cannot catch a break! This story is unfolding so beautifully. I really appreciate the slower pace of volume in particular. It feels like we got a chance to breathe for a moment in this volume. But of course that ending means that volume 7 is going to be back to fast paced, and I'm here for it!

This may have been my favorite volume yet, even though it was another rough one, emotionally. There was definite tension between Shiva and Teacher, but it was conflict that was so very needed. The plot is seriously thickening, and oh boy, we're getting some answers for a few things, but with each new answer, I seem to have more questions. Definitely looking forward to the next volume!

What a quick, cute read but with enough angst to make it a little less fluff! I loved seeing Nick and Charlie a little ways into the future from the comics and seeing how they're doing. As a couple, they're still working together but having some difficulties communicating (didn't we all at 17/18)? Of course, with how short this is, anything else I mention is going to be a spoiler, so I'll just recommend taking an hour to read this!

Well this was a rollercoaster of a read. I started off almost DNFing it, then became intrigued, then horrified, and ended melancholic. It was beautiful, frightening, and strangely magical, and also weirdly simplistic and complex. I feel like I should have been on something to fully understand this story. It was definitely too smart for me a lot of the time, but I still thoroughly enjoyed what I did understand!

Have you ever read a book that completely redefined your taste in different genres?

In this case, a sequel that rivals the brilliance and depth of the first novel.
