Ladies' Paradise
Ladies' Paradise | Emile Zola
22 posts | 27 read | 19 to read
The Ladies Paradise (Au Bonheur des Dames), now a TV series called The Paradise based on this classic novel, recounts the rise of the modern department store in late nineteenth-century Paris. The store is a symbol of capitalism, of the modern city, and of the bourgeois family: it is emblematic of changes in consumer culture and the changes in sexual attitudes and class relations taking place at the end of the century. This new translation of the eleventh novel in the Rougon-Macquart cycle captures the spirit of one of Zola's greatest works. About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

COMMERCE! The “big-box-storification” of late 19th cent Paris. Local merchants contending w/ threat of the first department stores. So cinematic: the streets, shelves, rush of goods & sales, fabrics & commissions, the push to profit & expansion. Retail management & customer flow. Footnotes explaining away casual stereotypes of Jews & women=wince. Lush language, melodrama. Retail jobs were tough & gossipy w/ harassers aplenty, even back then. 1883

4⭐️ Zola wrote such an amazing story about the lives inside and surrounding a massive department store in late 19th century Paris. The giant killed all the small businesses with its economies of scale and price wars. It‘s ironic that department stores are now killed by online stores. Jeff Bezos IS the Octave Mouret of the modern era 🙈, capitalizing on the consumer behaviour that has not changed since

The location of The Ladies‘ Paradise in Paris 😻 I want to visit Paris and check out all the locations in the series. Hopefully, we can travel soon 🤞🏻

BarbaraBB I do that to. It‘s kind of therapeutic and soothing while we cannot travel. 4y
Hooked_on_books I love looking up locations of things in the books I read. Looks like I‘m not the only one! 4y
sisilia @BarbaraBB @Hooked_on_books I love how the stories transported me to another world 🤗 4y

Thankyou @jenniferw88 for my #lonelyheartsclubswap I haven‘t seen a bookmark like these that show the exact line you have read to. They are great. I am using the sticky notes for my #LMPBC already and I will be sure to let you know what I think of the book xo

jenniferw88 Glad it arrived safely! When I declared the 1 teabag the post lady told me that someone declared a cabbage once! @bookish_wookish 6y

#augustisatrip #day7 - #paris

Was assigned this reading prior to my May-mester trip to Paris back in college. Loved what I read enough to recommend the book to others, though I never actually finished it myself. Also got to go to the actual store from the book!

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks That‘s cool!! I hope to go to Paris one day! 6y

Let's see if I can keep awake. Pens in Colorado. Zola is really good. #readingandlisteningtohockey

writerlibrarian First period is on. Colorado opens the score. 1-0. Pens tie the game and are going on PP. Barrie scores on PP and Colorado is ahead by 1. 2-1 Avs. 3-1 Avs with a late goal in the 2nd period. I'm passed 75% of Zola's novel. 3rd period is on and Geno reduces the Avs lead by 1. (edited) 7y

Sens and Habs are playing outside in Ottawa in very, very cold weather. It's cold here too. Winter has taken hold now. #readingandwatchinghockey welcome back Litsy you were missed 💕💕💕

Melissa_J I would not want to be in the stands watching that game! It‘s much more comfortable watching in the comfort of my own home 😊 7y
writerlibrarian @Melissa_J It looks frigidly cold. Nope me neither would not be out there. 7y
writerlibrarian It's -18 celsius. That is like a bit cold. I understand Karlsson wanting to be on the ice as much as possible and not on the bench. No goal after one period. 2nd period is on. Sens are on PP. Sens score first. 3rd on. (edited) 7y
rabbitprincess Minus 18! Brrrr! I was out a couple of hours ago to get supper and at that time the car thermometer said it was "only" minus 10 ?❄️ 7y
writerlibrarian Pens are about to get on the ice in Arizona. Puck drop. Pens on PP. No goal after one. 2nd period on. Pens on PP. No goal but they get another on back to back. (edited) 7y

writerlibrarian Pens are going on PP. No goal. Colorado score, MacKinnon but it's challenged. It was outside. No goal. Still no goal after 2 periods. (edited) 7y

I will #sharealazyhour today with the next book in my #litsyatoz challenge. Emile Zola had very few lazy hours. #survivingdecember

Lcsmcat Are you reading it in French or in translation? 7y
writerlibrarian @Lcsmcat in french. I read in both French and English. One of the perks of being french canadian. 👊🏻 7y
Lcsmcat I‘m setting myself a goal of reading more in French for 2018 and am trying to set up some buddy reads. Are you interested in joining us? 7y
writerlibrarian @Lcsmcat I usually read in the original edition if it's in English and in French for the rest. I've not done a lot of buddy read but I would be willing to try. (edited) 7y
LeeRHarry I really like this one 😊 and now need to get to Therese Raquin on my TBR 7y

A complex drama that embraces a wonderful historical depiction of retail stores back in the day (I.e. Imagine an early Macy's) with a touch of mystery, murder, innocence, addictive romance, and unforgettable twists that leave you guessing until the end! A fantastic #GoodRead.

Plus, the BBC trilogy was just as enticing by bringing this great story to life! 😎👍🏻
