Everything points to suicide - but I saw her face...Headstrong Journalist, Anna Rothman knows what suicide looks like - her own husband killed himself five years earlier. When Elly Swift, an agitated passenger beside her on a train, leaves a locket in Anna's bag before jumping onto the tracks, Anna starts asking awkward questions. But everything points to suicide and the police close the case.Anna, however, believes Elly's fears for Toby, her young nephew, missing since being snatched from St Stephen's church six months ago, fail to explain the true reason behind Elly's distress. Through a series of cryptic clues Elly left behind, Anna starts asking awkward questions, embarking on a dangerous crusade to track down Toby and find Elly's killer. But nothing is as it seems and Anna opens a can of worms that throws into question the death of her husband, five years earlier - before the threads of the mystery converge in an astonishing conclusion.

When you loudly exclaim "thank f*cking god" when it's done you know it wasn't good.
Where do I even begin with this TRAIN wreck?! I don't think I've ever read a book where in half of it is like "ok, not great but as far as mysteries go it's entertaining" to "what the hell is happening, who are these people, this is actually UNBELIEVABLE"!
Oh yes & TW rape but also don't worry too much b/c not detailed and no one really seems to bloody care!!????

Andrea4 This story was like Russian dolls with mysteries. Did the author even know what story they wanted to write? For that reason there were SO many characters most of which make brief appearances and are so 2D that you can't remember who is who and to which mystery they belong or even figure if they are important to remember! 3y
Andrea4 I also need to rant about how we are just going to nonchalantly deal with a predator; you know they are dangerous but hm maybe I don't really care about being alone with them...I don't really feel threatened. Wtf?! And feeling like they've "paid enough" for a crime no one really knows they committed. Oh just go to hell and burn!!!!! 3y
Andrea4 Oh and I do need to make a side comment about the religious tones that get very strange towards the end...a perceived afterlife??? A mention of a father that I feel was maybe mentioned at the beginning but then completely left out of the whole story. Again I wonder if the author knew what story they wanted to write. I can't go on...I will not pick up another Waines if this is what I can expect. 3y

Reviewsbylola I wasn‘t impressed with this one either. 3y
Andrea4 @Palimpsest oh I think you've got this confused with THE Girl on THE train by Hawkins. Which seems to be a super unfortunate mistake 3y
Andrea4 @Reviewsbylola 🤣🤣that's much more mild a review. 3y
Reviewsbylola 🤣🤣🤣🤣 it‘s been a few years. I may have been more worked up at the time. I remember my main reaction was bafflement. I couldn‘t understand how it became such a popular book. 3y
Andrea4 @Reviewsbylola oh are you thinking of THE girl on THE train which was made into a movie? 3y
Reviewsbylola Totally am! My observational skills are lacking. 😂🤦🏼‍♀️ 3y
Susanita I almost spit out my wine! 🤣🤣 That OTHER book didn‘t impress me (I bailed), and thanks to you I know to avoid this one too. 3y
Andrea4 @Susanita haha why does it feel like such a compliment when people almost spit out there drinks when you say something?! Lol I'm glad I can help you steer clear...now I'm worried about the OTHER one! 3y
Palimpsest @Andrea4 Yes, the titles are similar, but I don‘t feel it was a “super, unfortunate mistake”, just simply a mistake. In my opinion, the Hawkins book also sucks. Wow, how super unfortunate for me that I commented. 3y
Andrea4 @Palimpsest oh, sorry I think my comment was unclear. I meant people getting the books confused have led to super unfortunate mistakes because they think they are going to read Hawkins and then end up with this. I didn't mean to offend you. 3y

I'm literally listening to the last bit of this because I've come this far. Moat of my complaints stem from the last half, and like a crescendo of ridiculousness it just keeps building as we get to the climax. But I have come this far. I will finish. And then probably rant a little.

Don't stir it, is my motto, especially when it's someone else's favourite custard.

Wise words when it comes to dishing out your opinion about loved ones' partners.

BookishMarginalia I love this cover! 3y
Andrea4 @BookishMarginalia it's eye catching. But I think I'd like it better with one hand. I don't know why but both seems to intense for her facial expression. 3y
BookishMarginalia I agree with that! 3y

This book had me trying to predict every twist and turn but never quite getting close to the real picture. This thriller was absolutely amazing and the narrator Melissa Chambers was fantastic too! Not to be mistaken with Paula Hawkins, The girl on the train, but still definitely worth the listen or read! 😊

S3V3N I loved it. 5y
michellelav @BeaG Im now listening to her book The Evil Beneath! 5y
S3V3N @michellelav Let me know how you like it. I have not read that one yet. 5y

These British chicks and trains! Perhaps it's time for Uber 😂
Great narration! Listy reviews didn't have high marks on this one but I'm thoroughly enjoying it.

We had to wait at the train station for my friend's train, which was an hour late. That's about half of the English books they had.
My son was happy about their selection of Marvel and DC comics. We splurged on them, it's his birthday next week.

Bambolina_81 What a joy to have a child who loves to read as much as you 😊 7y
julesG @Bambolina_81 It is truly great. He reads mainly comics at the moment, but he reads! 7y

Bailedbailed

Nope nope nope. Cliched phrases and stereotypical flat characters make this an early dnf. I could only get about 40% before giving up. From what I've read of other reviews about the ending, I made right choice in bailing.

VeryLazyDaisy Not to be confused with the amazing Paula Hawkins book! 7y

Ok so confused! I have been reading this totally thinking I was reading The Girl on the Train, you guys must think I am crazy. But it was a great mistake, such a good story. I was mystified at Hollywood's changing the story SO MUCH in the previews. DERP!!!! I have been in a hurricane. My excuse.

Well-ReadNeck 😂😂😂 8y

Catching an early flight and gonna listen to this. Not to be confused with Girl on THE Train

MrBook 😂👍🏻 I saw this in the bookstore and did a double-take. There's yet a third book with a very similar title which made me do a triple-take. All these girls on trains...maybe they shouldn't ride trains anymore? *shrugs* 8y
