The whole story is interlaced with few ideas, in particular, all ideas are derived from the concept of obligation. The parallel theme to the metaphysical themes is language, use of words and interpretation of them. I have some minor issues with the story, but despite that, this is an excellent book for all of those who like to read/contemplate about relations on Proustian way. And-this is the book with the best opening chapter that I can recallâ€¼ï¸

I love Marias's long looping sentences.

shawnmooney All in all, I didn't like this novel so much. But the scene where the two translators meet for the first time, the one flirting with the other by way of mistranslating his president or PM, is a scene I will never, ever forget! :-) 8y
