The Better World Book Challenge...and only 7 books completed but there‘s always 2018!

Today has been a 2-book day so far, and it's only noon! I just read The Seventh Wish cover to cover and I highly recommend it. I know the author faced some criticism for writing a middle grade book tackling drug addiction, but she did it in a really sensitive way. It's age-appropriate and focuses on what it's like to have a family member with addiction. You don't "see" drug use. I will feel comfortable putting it in my 7th grade class library.

I enjoyed this quick YA read. It was an interesting way of presenting a difficult subject to a younger audience.

I had to read this after the controversy and it's a powerful and age-appropriate depiction of a family member's addiction. My favorite of Kate Messner's so far.

This is a brilliant look at family and how one exuberant girl who has a passion for Irish dancing, an odd taste in science experiments, a fear of ice, and a big heart deals with every day life and an unexpected tragedy. Full of hope and exactly right for the target audience.

Absolutely beautiful. I hope this book finds the kids who need it, because it deals with real struggles. Ugly struggles, but real, and ones that we do kids no favors by sweeping under the rug. This book is empathetic and fierce and important.

I always enjoy Kate Messner's books. I've been reading the controversy surrounding this book and feel that this is a great tween book that deals with the tough topic of addiction in a sensitive, age appropriate, and honest way. A great read!

In this loose retelling of The Fisherman and His Wife, Charlie comes to discover that wishes are tricky, and that even magic can't fix everything—especially the problems in her family.
The story is told with sensitivity and respect for its intended audience. I could not recommend it more highly.

This is a must read.

In my opinion, Kate Messner just gets better and better. Like her other books, TSW tackles real-life serious issues in a gentle, age-appropriate manner. I love books that are both fun and sweet but also don't avoid hard truths. Kids need this book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ An excellent and appropriately written story for middle grade readers on a difficult topic. Not many children's authors tackle drug addiction and its effect on a family. Kate Messner does so in an emotionally engaging, very real way. A great read to help gain perspective and understanding

So nice of Kate Messner's cover designer to match my living room! I've been looking forward to this book for some time—a modern MG retelling of the fairytale The Fisherman and His Wife. Perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

This week, THE SEVENTH WISH was removed from some school libraries and the author "disinvited" from a school visit despite being well-reviewed, kid-friendly, and magical. Why? The book touches on a difficult topic, and the school principal was afraid. ? BUY IT. READ IT. SHARE IT. It's important.

This just came in with the mail. I am looking forward to seeing what about this book has made schools cancel the author's visit.
