Vincent
Vincent: Art Masters Series | Barbara Stok
20 posts | 12 read | 28 to read
A portrait of Van Gogh's turbulent stay in Provence. Vincent dreams of setting up an artists' house in Arles for himself and his friends. However, his attacks of mental illness confuse and disorient him, culminating in the notorious incident with his ear and leaving his dreams shattered. Throughout all of this, Vincent's brother Theo stands by him, offering constant and unconditional support. Van Gogh was passionate about his art. His ideas about success, setbacks and how to create a meaningful life provide an interesting counterpoint to our age of individualism and commercialism. Stylistically, Stok is almost faultless... [Vincent] leaves us aware of a small breath of fresh air blown into the worlds of art history - Nicholas Wadley, The Times Literary Supplement.

Loved this! Wonderful artwork that depicts Van Gogh‘s life from his move to Arles to paint and form an artist‘s society to his mental illness and death. I love the relationship he had with his brother, Theo.

Not gonna lie, near the very beginning I was gonna quit the book just because of how I perceived Vincent as annoying but I kept going and felt compelled to keep reading about him and his doomed path. His ups and downs in both his personal and professional life. Even though I knew it was useless I found myself rooting for Vincent near the end.

What a weird book, but I will say that the feeling of loathing felt by the protagonist throughout the book is SO PALPABLE through the pages. I might revisit this book someday to better grasp the allegories and allusions to post Civil War sentiments of Spain that I know I‘m missing.

It seems I'm getting into graphic biographies. There is so much to read in the pictures here! It focuses on Van Gogh's life between his moving to Arles and painting the Wheatfield with Crows. He's a man on a mission: articulate, impossible, uncompromising, fretful about money and, despite his difficulties, optimistic. The last three spreads (of him painting his last picture, then panning out until only the painting remains) made me sob. Wonderful!

JamieArc Have you Brazen by Penelope Bagieu? It‘s a short biography of 30 different women in graphic novel form, and the woman are all pretty fascinating. 6y

My daughter said, "I ordered some books."
Yes, Pet. Yes, you did!

(I've got my eye on the Vincent book already but I dare say the whole lot will make it on to my TBR sooner or later.)

Laura317 That Vincent book has been on my tbr for awhile. I should just go ahead and order it, shouldn‘t I? 7y
Cathythoughts A daughter with excellent taste 💫 7y
quietlycuriouskate @Cathythoughts ? Have you seen the film (sorry, I forget the title) in which Andy Serkis plays Ian Dury? His lad asks, "Are we posh, Dad?" and he replies, "No, son: we're Arts and Crafts." #relatable ? 7y

A charming, emotive graphic novel about Van Gogh‘s life starting from his sojourn in Arles to his death. The graphic style is like a cartoon version of Van Gogh‘s own. Deals heavily with his view of art, his mental health and his relationship with Theo. It‘s based partially on his letters and absolutely reminds me why he‘s one of my favourite painters. (P.S. Not recommended for children.)

Wow. This is fantastic. It captures the mood of an artist who is brilliant and breaking down, in a sympathetic but not sad way. The art in here is perfection. She captures the feeling of passion and panic. A unique look at the artist. #comics #riotgrams #litsypartyofone
