Now in paperback, the brilliant new psychological thriller from worldwide bestseller Camilla Läckberg—the chilling struggle of a young woman facing the darkest chapter of Europe’s past. Crime writer Erica Falck is shocked to discover a Nazi medal among her late mother’s possessions. Haunted by a childhood of neglect, she resolves to dig deep into her family’s past and finally uncover the reasons why. Her enquiries lead her to the home of a retired history teacher. He was among her mother’s circle of friends during the Second World War but her questions are met with bizarre and evasive answers. Two days later he meets a violent death. Detective Patrik Hedström, Erica’s husband, is on paternity leave but soon becomes embroiled in the murder investigation. Who would kill so ruthlessly to bury secrets so old? Reluctantly Erica must read her mother’s wartime diaries. But within the pages is a painful revelation about Erica’s past. Could what little knowledge she has be enough to endanger her husband and newborn baby? The dark past is coming to light, and no one will escape the truth of how they came to be . . .

I just loved the story in this book. A great storyline that involved a current storyline and a storyline during the war involving Erica‘s mother. Glad to see more of Erica in this book, and also good to get more of the other characters. Great to see Mellberg in a new light. A quite complex storyline which allowed for plenty of theorising by the reader and that‘s what I love in books in this genre. Totally recommend this book! 😠#NordicNoir

Andrew65 Book 10/11 finished for #MidYearRush and met my third target, to read 4 #NordicNlir books, which is a great achievement given the length of the books. @Clwojick 4y

Started book 5 in the Patrick Hedstrom series. #NordicNoir

Providing I finish this before the end of Monday I will meet one of my goals for #MidYearRush, by reading four #NordicNoir books during the Readathon.

An old man is found murdered in his home. Patrik Hedström is on paternity leave, so his colleagues have to solve it without him.

At the same time Erica Falck finds some things after her mother, like her diaries and a Nazi medal, and starts looking into that. We have in the other books heard about how cold and distant her mother had been, so I liked following Erica on her journey to find out more about her mother.

#NordicNoir

AnneCecilie I have some thoughts about the translation of the title that I‘ll leave here. I see that at least one of the English titles is the tagged one which might lead the thoughts to the hidden children. A reference to children, mainly Jewish, that were hidden during WWII. But the original title should be translated into The German Child. I‘m not sure if this was a thing anywhere else, I didn‘t even know it was a thing in Sweden since they (edited) 4y
AnneCecilie were neutral during the war. In Norway, this is term that was used on children that had a Norwegian mother and a German soldier father. After the war these kids had it though since their mothers had been sleeping with the enemy. Their mothers had it though too, some had their head shaved so everyone knew what they had been up to, some even lost their Norwegian citizenships and were sent to Germany. So to me the original title gives me (edited) 4y
AnneCecilie connotation to something completely different than the translated title. Was this a thing anywhere else after the war? 4y
Andrew65 Looking forward to this one, just finished book 4 in the early hours of this morning. Still playing catch up! 4y
EadieB @AnneCeilie Thanks for the clarification on the translation of the title. It does give a new perspective of the story. 4y

Finally made it to the balcony to read outside. I can‘t remember the last time I did that.

Catching up on #NordicNoir now that the library is open again and I can borrow books. This is the book that should have been finished in early May.

Crazeedi Well you're ahead of me so you're doing good! Isnt it awesome to sit on one's porch?!⤠4y

EadieB I like that Mellberg is in love as he doesn't really do any work at his job and I like that he now has a dog. 5y
Tove_Reads This seems to be the best thing that has happened to him. 5y
Butterfinger Mellberg finally acted like a likeable character. He likes the dog. He likes the baby. I hope it works out for him. 4y

EadieB I think it will get complicated with Patrik's ex-wife in the picture. 5y
Tove_Reads I hope the book will still focus on other things than family life. I do understand that she wants to write about this important issue, but it gets old fast. 5y

EadieB Patrik's mom takes over too much when she comes to visit. I think Erica's finds it very annoying and I don't thing Erica will take much more from her. 5y
Tove_Reads I hope they‘ll get along better, but she really is an annoying mil. 5y
Butterfinger @EadieB @Tove_Reads I hope they have a better relationship, but she should have told Erica about the diaries. 4y

Butterfinger @EadieB @Tove_Reads the old murder was so sad. I can understand why Axel became unglued, but Frans was jealous. I certainly disliked Frans's father. 4y

Butterfinger @EadieB @Tove_Reads I am so glad they can understand why their mother seemed to be such a hard woman. Erica was always troubled by it. The diaries were so important. 4y

EadieB I found it rather interesting but don't know how it's going to work out with him meeting his ex-wife! 5y
Tove_Reads He was working quite a lot, so it didn‘t really feel like he was staying at home with his child. 5y
Butterfinger @EadieB @Tove_Reads he certainly tried, but I am glad he told his ex-wife how much he loved his life with Erica. With Erica being a true crime author and Patrick a detective, their children will certainly be immersed in police work. 4y

I enjoyed the book! My fave in the series this far. Erica is working while P is taking care of their daughter. She starts researching her troubled mother‘s past only to find out family secrets and the reason her mother never really loved her. The historical part takes us back to the 40s, which means Nazis. Has Mellberg finally gone soft and fallen in love? P‘s ex-wife is back in town. Naturally the ending gives clues to the next book.

Andrew65 Sounds great. 😊 5y

Picked up these for me from my building‘s book exchange yesterday along with some gifts for others. Are any required reading or should I just put them back? My step daughter‘s are half Swedish so I am trying to read more books by Swedish authors such as Lackberg. The Weldon one had a short story that looked interesting and to be honest I only picked up the Moriarty one because her sister is a writer I enjoy.

Crazeedi Hmmm, I haven't read any but they look rather interesting! 5y
CarolynM I'm not keen on Scandi noir, but I know that Camilla Lackberg is very popular with a lot of people who do like it. 5y

Searched for available audiobooks from my library narrated by Simon Vance. This one was, so I‘m giving it a go while on my lunchtime walk by the office.

Today's author spotlight: (Jean Edith) Camilla Läckberg (Eriksson)! The 43-year-old was born in Fjällbacka, Sweden. Her books are translated into 40+ languages and found in 60 countries. Every one of her books have been #1 bestsellers in Sweden, and she was Europe's best-selling female author in 2010. She's sold more books than Stieg Larsson. She is engaged, for a third time, to MMA fighter and author Simon Sköld. #AuthorPotpourri #TheMoreYouKnow

Read this 528-page book at the beach in two days. It was not what I expected, more of a murder mystery. But fun to read and I loved that the author is described as "the most profitable native author in Swedish history." Take that, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo! 5 out of 5.
