Anna and the King of Siam
Anna and the King of Siam | Margaret Landon

Anna Leonowens, a proper Englishwoman, was an unlikley candidate to change the course of Siamese (Thai) history. A young widow and mother, her services were engaged in the 1860's by King Mongkut of Siam to help him communicate with foreign governments and be the tutor to his children and favored concubines. Stepping off the steamer from London, Anna found herself in an exotic land she could have only dreamed of lush landscape of mystic faiths and curious people, and king's palace bustling with royal pageantry, ancient custom, and harems. One of her pupils, the young prince Chulalongkorn, was particularly influenced by Leonowens and her Western ideals. He learned about Abraham Lincoln and the tenets of democracy from her, and years later he would become Siam's most progressive king. He guided the country's transformation from a feudal state to a modern society, abolshing slavery and making many other radical reforms. Weaving meticulously researched facts with beautifully imagined scenes, Margret Landon recreates an unforgettable portrait of life in a forgotten extotic land. Written more than fifty years ago, and translated into dozens of languages, Anna and the King of Siam (the inspiration for the magical play and film The King and I)continues to delight and enchant readers around the world.

Reading this during my trip to Thailand formerly known as Siam. That is the city of Bangkok where this book takes place. BTW this book is awesome. I learned so much about Thailand and life at the Grand Palace. Spoiler there was no love or romance between Anna and the King. Just friendship.

Apparently, I need to read more books #SetInSoutheastAsia, because all I have for this prompt is the musical of The King and I. #AprilBookShowers

Not the best picture but my #coolspines are old books. I adore everything about old books and they have some of the most interesting spines and covers. #riotgrams

ralexist I have this copy! I found it in a second hand shop and it had an old news article in it about Anna. 8y

I had the joy of going to see The King and I at Playhouse Square in Cleveland last night. The show was very good. The singing was outstanding. I am sharing a picture of the street in front of the theater for those of you who have never been to Cleveland. This is the lovely chandelier over the street. Playhouse Square is a wonderful venue, and I feel fortunate to have it in my area. Come and visit Ohio - Cleveland Rocks!!

Suzze My friends and I enjoy Cleveland very much. We usually stay at the Embassy Suites downtown as they have a free shuttle that takes you practically anywhere nearby. Now we need another trip to see this. Very cool. 8y
ValerieAndBooks I'd like to visit-- last time we were there was about 20 years ago, maybe more! 8y
Lindy Great photo. Thanks for sharing! 8y

So...I follow @GailCarriger because I'm a member of the #ParasolProtectorate. If you're not, you should check out her books - start with Soulless. Anyway, she frequently shares book deals for books she finds interesting or that have influenced her. She also reviews books that she has enjoyed as part of a book club of sorts. It's a lot of fun to learn more an author who's work I enjoy, even if it means I spend all my money on books.

#Day10 of #somethingforsept: books #setinasia. I really enjoy reading about these cultures as they are so very different from our own. The Orchid House alternates between present day England and Thailand during WWII. The Virgin's Knot is set in Turkey. Beneath a Marble Sky is a beautiful love story centered around the making of the Taj Mahal. Empress and the Lisa See books are set in China. The Sleeping Dictionary is a wonderful story set in India
