The Poison Tree
The Poison Tree: A Novel | Erin Kelly
12 posts | 16 read | 17 to read
From an incredible new voice in psychological suspense, a novel about the secrets that remain after a final bohemian summer of excess turns deadly. This taut psychological thriller begins when Karen and her nine-year- old daughter, Alice, pick up Rex from a ten-year stint in prison for murder. Flash back to the sultry summer in 1990s London when Karen, a straight-A student on the verge of college graduation, first meets the exotic, flamboyant Biba and joins her louche life in a crumbling mansion in Highgate. She begins a relationship with Biba's enigmatic and protective older brother, Rex, and falls into a blissful rhythm of sex, alcohol, and endless summer nights. Navely, Karen assumes her newfound happiness will last forever. But Biba and Rex have a complicated family history-one of abandonment, suicide, and crippling guilt-and Karen's summer of freedom is about to end in blood. When old ghosts come back to destroy the life it has taken Karen a decade to build, she has everything to lose. She will do whatever it takes to protect her family and keep her secret. Alternating between the fragile present and the lingering past with a shocker of an ending, The Poison Tree is a brilliant suspense debut that will appeal to readers of Kate Atkinson, Donna Tartt, and Tana French.

Setting - 1990 London. A novel about the secrets that remain after a final bohemian summer of excess turns deadly. Begins when Karen & her 9 yo daughter, Alice, pick up Rex from a 10 y stint in prison for murder. The book switches between the past & present. The characters are well-drawn. The story is slow-building but gets more interesting in the end. The book will appeal to those who love psychological suspense, Donna Tartt & Tana French books.

This has been languishing on my TBR shelf for a while but thanks to #bookspinbingo I‘ve now read it!

I had thought it may be a bit ‘blah‘ and even nearly gave it away earlier this year without reading. In fact it was really engrossing and, even though I guessed the twist fairly early on that didn‘t matter as it was so well-written. I loved the MC who was drawn into a bohemian world so different to her own, with tragic consequences.

Fantastic new to me author! Love her writing, it's as mesmerizing as Biba is to Karen. The first person POV narrative bounces back and forth between past and present. As Karen tells us her story, she drops tantalizing little hints or alludes to something that happens later, and I was constantly on the edge of my seat waiting for the big reveal, and grasping at each secret that finally came to light. Definitely want to read more by this author.

My current read. I‘m at the halfway mark and really liking it. Looked on Netflix and Hulu for the film but neither one has it.

#Day16 #SeptemberPhotoChallenge #bookrainbow Not sure I have the full Roy G. Biv colors in my rainbow book stack-yellow & violet were few and far between in my shelves--so maybe mine is more Ro G. Bi?!?😀🌈 And I would have liked uniform book sizes... but this was the best I could do with limited time and patience. 😬 #readtherainbow 🌈#somethingforsept

Zelma You have more patience than me; I only did one book per color and didn't care about size. 👍 8y
britt_brooke Very nicely done! 🌈📷 8y

Look at this sweet deal! I hadn't heard of this one before, but Stephen King compares it to Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca, so I'm sold!

#recommendsday Toxic relationships and dark secrets. The end presents a shocking moral dilemma. What would you do if you were Karen?

MrBook Ooh, nice premise. And wonderful picture! 8y
