Alone Together
Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other | Sherry Turkle
In "Alone Together," MIT technology and society professor Sherry Turkle explores the power of our new tools and toys to dramatically alter our social lives. It's a nuanced exploration of what we are looking for--and sacrificing--in a world of electronic companions and social networking tools, and an argument that, despite the hand-waving of today's self-described prophets of the future, it will be the next generation who will chart the path between isolation and connectivity.

Pickpick

The first half of this book was about robots & how we as humans interact with them emotionally. The second part was focused on social media, being online & how that is affecting our relationships with each other. It‘s an accessible read, although it is a bit dated and often repetitive. It probably made an impact at the time it was released. 👇

youneverarrived Still, a fascinating read. It really gets you thinking about technology, relationships, how we communicate & what it means to care. I would love to read a follow up. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #booked2019 #socialmediafocus 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Sounds like a good pick for this prompt. 👊🏻📚♥️✔️ 5y

Suet624 Did it inspire you to change any of your behaviors? 5y
youneverarrived @MrBook thank you ☺️ 5y
youneverarrived @Suet624 not really as I think I‘m pretty balanced when it comes to social media/being online and real life. I could relate to some of the things but mostly from when I was younger e.g. feeling like you could be yourself more online. 5y

I am So Excited for this! I'm in the Central time zone in the US, so I can't wait to see how my Litsy friends start celebrating the day! @Ambrosnazzy you are a genius!
I'm not going to make a list of what I'm going to read, I'll just take it as it comes. And if there were ever a time for #Litsomnia to hit, hopefully it's then!
This is going to be such an awesome party!

#TBRtemptation post! Found this in the Science section, but it seems more appropriate for the Social Sciences section, particularly Sociology (one of my favorite sections since I love learning about human interactions & cultures). Written by an MIT professor, it explores the differences between face-to-face life & simulated life of the online world (hello, Litsy, lol). I'll definitely be checking out her predictions. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

mostlycatsandcoffee Oh this looks like a must read. I'm also wanting to read (edited) 7y

When Thoreau considered "where I live and what I live for," he tied together location and values. Where we live doesn't just change how we live; it informs who we become. Most recently, technology promises us lives on the screen. What values, Thoreau would ask, follow from this new location? Immersed in simulation, where do we live, and what do we live for?
