A Storm of Swords Complete Edition (Two in One) (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 3)
A Storm of Swords Complete Edition (Two in One) (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 3) | George R. R. Martin
HBOs hit series A GAME OF THRONES is based on George R. R. Martins internationally bestselling series A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE, the greatest fantasy epic of the modern age. A STORM OF SWORDS is the third volume in the series. The Seven Kingdoms are divided by revolt and blood feud, and winter approaches like an angry beast. Beyond the Northern borders, wildlings leave their villages to gather in the ice and stone wasteland of the Frostfangs. From there, the renegade Brother Mance Rayder will lead them South towards the Wall. The men of the Nights Watch are ready for the coming of a great cold and the walking corpses that travel with it. But now they face a horde of wildlings twenty-thousand strong hungry savage people steeped in the dark magic of the haunted wilderness poised to invade the Kingdom of the North where Robb Stark wears his new-forged crown. But Robbs defences are ranged against attack from the South, the land of House Starks enemies the Lannisters. His sisters are trapped there, dead or likely yet to die, at the whim of the Lannister boy-king Joffrey or his depraved mother Cersei, regent of the Iron Throne. Cerseis ambition is unfettered while the dwarf Tyrion Lannister fights for his life, a victim of treachery. And on the other side of the ocean, the last of the Targaryens rears the dragons she hatched from her husbands funeral pyre. Daenerys Stormborn will return to the land of her birth to avenge the murder of her father, the last Dragon King on the Iron Throne.

It's almost May so it's time to post my #2024bookbracket These picks surprise nobody. (GRRM is a phenomenal writer) I was having trouble deciding between the two ASOIAF books, but ultimately, I love them equally.

I also had my first bonus pick of the year!

Looking back over this one is TOUGH, growth/heartache so much happened & for certain characters it seemed like minimal movement for the whole book -until a sudden twist but some we saw moment by moment. I‘m worried for the characters on the sidelines but I love process.. hero‘s or villains.
I could not do it without #readingwesteros

majkia I'm not sure who is meaner to their characters. GRRM or Robin Hobb. Neck and neck IMO. 7mo

She builds Winterfell in the snow. Littlefinger helps her &tries for a kiss. Sansa rebukes him &they are interupted by Little Lord Robert. Who starts to knock down the castle. Sansa rips the head off his toy
She worries about Lysa‘s reaction to how she treated Robert, but Lysa saw the kiss
Lysa threatens her with the moon door, Littlefinger stops it. In her madnesses, Lysa starts confessing
But Littlefinger has only loved 1 woman, he consoles her-

5feet.of.fury What a crazy chapter. A history lesson, the Tansy mystery & Jon Arryn‘s murder get solved. Loopy Lysa goes out the moon door. The rapist gets framed. Littlefinger is a creep and a conniver but gotta give it to him for this one. 7mo

Sargar114 I totally forgot that Lysa was the one to kill her husband!!! To think this whole series is snowballed because of that because Robert needed a new hand and Ned went to Kings Landing! 🤯. Littlefinger is such a creep, but not upset he pushed her out the moon door. And quick thinking to frame the singer. 7mo
Sargar114 @5feet.of.fury I agree poor Sansa, but you‘d think at this point she‘d have figured out how to protect herself by now 7mo
5feet.of.fury @Sargar114 so true!!! All the Starks would still be in Winterfell, everything would be someone else‘s problem. 7mo

Tyrion, incredibly drunk, theorizes that Joff sent the man to attack Bran w/Littlefinger‘s knife at Winterfell

After pleasantries they toast the new queen &start the festivities. Sansa, distracted, hardly eats

Sansa breakfasts with the Lannisters on the morning of Joff & Margaery‘s wedding, it is custom to give the bride &groom gifts. Tyrion gifts him a book “The Lives of Four Kings”, Joff says he has no time for books &later cuts it in half, everyone trying to tell him how important the book is. After, Sansa &Tyrion come upon Oberyn &Ellaria where they discuss the kings in the book. Tyrion suggests another gift for Joff saying “he has earned a dagger”

5feet.of.fury This chapter showed a change in Sansa IMO, she‘s still a believer in the old stories & in way over her head but her internal dialogue is more witty than the silly scared girl we‘re used to, Tyrion rubbing off on her a bit? 8mo

Bran hears footfalls. But it‘s not the Rat Cook it is Sam& Gilly. Sam knows he is Jon‘s brother. Sam talks to the weirwood &opens the gate

Bklover I was so relieved when Bran found Sam and Gilly. At least they are kind people! 8mo
5feet.of.fury @Bklover glad the found eachother! some good news for once! 8mo
BethM @Bklover @5feet.of.fury agreed! I thought this chapter was really immersive 8mo

Wildlings are coming for Castle Black. Jon is still injured. He wonders where Ghost is. &Ygritte even though he tries not to think of her. The wildings come at night, the night‘s watch pick them off with arrows, but the wildlings start setting everything ablaze. They battle &burn the barricade trapping the wildlings. The Wall defended, Jon goes to look for Ygritte..

Bklover @5feet.of.fury. Boy, no kidding! This Jon seems a bit more brutal than tv Jon. And poor Ygritte- “you know nothing Jon Snow” 8mo
5feet.of.fury @majkia @Bklover we‘ve been through a lot this week in Westeros …but this one 💔 8mo
BooksNBowls @Bklover it‘s one of my favorite lines from the show! You know nothing, Jon Snow! 8mo
Roary47 💔 I hope this coming week gives us a lot less heartache. 😭😭😭 8mo
5feet.of.fury @BooksNBowls I love her, sassy til the end! @Roary47 I hope so 😩 8mo
BethM Wow just anxiety filled the whole chapter. I must say I liked tv better here, I feel like they gave her a better end. 8mo

Stannis hears of the Red Wedding, but he is not impressed with the Freys. Queen Selyse &Melisandre preach that killing Edric Storm will raise dragons for Stannis. She implies her ritual killed 2 kings, Davos says if the 3rd dies he will be convinced &Stannis sees his logic
Davos has been learning to read & Pylos gives him an old letter from the Nightwatch about the wildlings coming south, asking for help; he is troubled by the implications

Roary47 I‘m just impressed that news is traveling faster this time. It normally takes forever to get news to our other POVs. The names in Davos‘ POV I‘m having trouble remembering the most. 8mo
5feet.of.fury @Roary47 there was one person he was talking to to that I was like “ok, thanks, whoever you are” 😅 but happy to help with any of the others 😂 8mo

BooksNBowls Why does no one care about the wildings?! 8mo
5feet.of.fury @BooksNBowls it seems so far away so it must be someone else‘s problem. Unfortunately not much different from how we (society/the US/the average person in the West) react to global events. 8mo
BethM @5feet.of.fury I think you nailed it. 8mo
BooksNBowls @5feet.of.fury great point! 8mo
Bklover This was one of those chapters where I kept thinking “I hope this part isn‘t too important because I am having a hard time with this.” Too many names that I know but can‘t place. 8mo

Lannisters get news from the Twins “captured a fat fish & 2 wolf pelts”. River men are lost now.The Mountain is sent to deal with Harrenhal
Joff wants to torment Sansa with another Stark head, Tyrion stops it
Joff insults Tywin, he &Cersei are dismissed. Tywin was involved with the Frey‘s plot &has more deceptions for the Oberyn. He‘s also promised Arya Stark to Roose Bolton‘s Bastard somehow the North will fall to Tyrion &Sansa‘s hypothetical son

BooksNBowls I‘m glad Tywin put Joff in his place finally. Someone needed to. I fear this news may push Sansa over the edge though.. I enjoyed the little history lesson, but I must say all these names are confusing me. I‘m glad I have the show characters as a reference because otherwise I‘d probably be even more lost by now. 8mo
5feet.of.fury @BooksNBowls There was something in Tywins speech about Renly appearing at Blackwater, I think implying that Tywin had a hand in that too. These effin Lannisters (not you Tyrion) 8mo

BethM @BooksNBowls Joff needs a good whooping 😂 @5feet.of.fury no kidding! Tywin is evil 8mo
Bklover As much of a hardass as Tywin is I can‘t imagine how he‘s controlled himself up to now with Joff. I cannot stand that little monster! 8mo
Roary47 I‘m glad I‘m not alone with all the name @BooksNBowls I thought the same thing about the Lannisters @5feet.of.fury Tyrion is their only good one in that group. I think the only thing saving Joff is he is the only heir old enough to defend himself right now. @Bklover Tywin might off him if there was someone else. Poor Sansa 😢 8mo

Arya is excited that the castle is open, but the Hound senses the danger. The tents are burning, Arya knows it‘s a battle. They are attacked & the Hound saves her, tells her that her brother is dead. She runs from him&he follows. His axe takes her in the back of the head.

Roary47 Oh man. 😭 I hope we are taking a break from that storyline. I‘m not sure I can take much more. 💔 8mo
majkia @Roary47 yeah, this part is definitely hard to take. 8mo

Roslin &Edmure are wedded. Edmure seems pleased. The food is abysmal but the drinks are flowing at the feast. Grey Wind was not allowed in the hall. Roslin is scared as the hall calls for their bedding. Robb doesn‘t go to watch &Cat thinks of the implications. When snubbed by Edwyn Frey, she realized he‘s wearing chainmail &slaps him-

5feet.of.fury -Robb goes to them & is struck down by an arrow… the musicians are armed. Frey men come with long axes, Cat pleads for mercy. She takes a hostage &kills Jinglebell as Robb is killed. She cries out for her lost children as a sword is put to her throat… 8mo
BethM Ugh I hate this so much. I want a vicious end to Frey. 8mo

Doppoetry @5feet.of.fury It's true! last chapter they were so close 😭If they would have only stayed a little longer... 8mo
BooksNBowls We knew it was coming, but it still hurts!! I hate that Cat died not knowing her family was okay. 😭😭 8mo
Roary47 This hurt my heart so much. 😭😭 I need a break from this… until tomorrow. Why is Theon still alive, but we lose Robb and Cat? At least before she can see her babies again! 😭😭😭💔 8mo
Bklover @BooksNBowls I agree! She never got to see any of them again. I‘ve been dreading this part- it‘s just sad. 8mo

The Hound has a plan to get in front of Robb. Bringing pickled pigs feet to the feast. Arya worries over Roose Bolton being in attendance, if he knows what she did to escape Harrenhal. They are denied entry to the castle, but are taken to the tents. She looks for allies. But the Hound isn‘t deterred.

Cat advises Robb on how to approach the Frey‘s but Grey Wind makes a bad impression. They all appear before Lord Walder, Rob apologizes to the Frey heirs for breaking his vow. Edmure meets Roslin &is pleasantly surprised. Cat is still on edge &invokes hospitality laws
Robb finds from Lord Bolton that Ramsay has Theon hostage. Robb gives him command of the rear guard

BethM Ugh so much dread, I need this story line over. I also feel like shouting : LISTEN TO YOUR DAMN WOLF! 8mo

Wounded & exhausted, Jon imagines all the friends he‘ll see when he reaches the Wall.
When he gets there to warn the wildlings are coming to the gate, hardly anyone is there to defend &no Ghost. He hears of Mormont‘s murder, the Maester tends to his wounds. He tells them about Mance‘s search for Horn of Winter &about Ygritte. Grenn tells him about Sam the Slayer. They tell him Winterfell is gone, Bran& Rickon dead. …but he saw the Direwolf.

Without the sun Arya can‘t tell which way they travel. She fears the Hound is taking her to KingsLanding. They reach a river &need to be ferried across, the Ferrymen won‘t take an IOU from Beric. Arya has tried to escape/kill the Hound but he‘s thwarted her. Arya tells the Hound how she was captured by his brother. The Hound tells her how he saved Sansa. He‘s taking her to the Twins for the ransom, maybe they‘ll make it in time for the wedding.

Robb has left his wife behind &they head to the wedding with hope that if Edmure &Roslin are wed happily Frey would be appeased.
Robb &Jeyne have been trying to conceive, he needs an heir for Winterfell, currently it would pass to Sansa &Tyrion. Cat tells him to name an heir; a Vale lordling. Robb says it will be Jon. She gives many excuses against it, only 1 good 1.

Balon Greyjoy is dead, knowing this will cause infighting, Robb plans an attack

BethM @majkia @5feet.of.fury I don‘t understand how she‘s so mad at him still but not Ned. 8mo
5feet.of.fury @BethM it makes me so mad! He didn‘t ask to be BORN Catelyn! 8mo
Sargar114 While I don‘t love her dislike of Jon, I feel like it makes her more human and real as a character. She‘s flawed and that makes me appreciate her a little more as weird as it sounds. 8mo
BooksNBowls @Sargar114 I totally understand what you are saying! I just didn‘t understand she had so much conviction for how she treated Edmure and Robb, but none whatsoever about Jon. 8mo
BooksNBowls @BethM that good ole boys will be boys mindset 🙄 8mo
Roary47 I don‘t understand why she is mad at Jon either. Like she loves Ned and they probably worked it out. @majkia @BethM I have a strong feeling that his mother died so she in her mind can only take it out on Jon. Still not right, but in her mind her anger needs to go somewhere. We didn‘t find out who his mom is yet right? 8mo
5feet.of.fury @Roary47 It‘s still a mystery 8mo
