The News from Paraguay
The News from Paraguay: A Novel | Lily Tuck
11 posts | 7 read | 9 to read
A historical epic that tells an unusual love story, "The News from Paraguay" offers a kaleidoscopic portrait of 19th-century Paraguay, a largely untouched wilderness where Europeans and North Americans intermingle with both the old Spanish aristocracy and native Guaran' Indians.

Living in Paris among the elite, Ella Lynch meets a handsome stranger and ends up going to his home country, #Paraguay, with him. Never marrying, she is effectively his wife, as they have multiple children together, he secedes his father as president, and the country devolves into war. I quite liked this—the perspective is unique and the extreme violence is balanced by a thread of wry humor.

So I'm a total lover of historical fiction so for me this was a great read. Romance and conflict (Paraguayan war) I knew very little about and engaging characters really kept me entertained. And may have led to many Google searches for things that I found interesting. #ReadingTheAmericas #bookspin @thearomaofbooks @librarybelle @BarbaraBB

I decided to give this historical fiction set in #Paraguay a listen although it didn‘t have great reviews. Ella is living in France when she becomes involved with Francisco and goes to Paraguay as his mistress. They stay together as he becomes dictator and embroils his country in a devastating war. I never became invested in the characters or events, although I thought there was great potential for a fascinating story.

Just finished this historical novel set during the Paraguayan War (1864-1870). It follows Ella Lynch, a young Irishwoman who begins a passionate affair with Francisco Lopez, Paraguay‘s ambitious and violent leader.

Good morning! I‘m at just about 14 hours (my stopwatch just cleared itself for no reason, so give or take 10 minutes) and starting this historical novel.

Hope all you other readathon-ers are going strong!

BarbaraBB Curious of this book! 6y
readtheworld @BarbaraBB I saw it at a library book sale and had never heard of it — which is surprising, given that it won the National Book Award in 2004. I‘m only 20 pages in but enjoying it so far. 6y
BarbaraBB I will look forward to your review. I am really interested in Paraguay! 6y

I finished it. That's something. My mind wandered constantly while reading; not sure if that was a result of life happenings or a reflection of the book. Either way, done and won't attempt to reread.

#booktober Day Two: Books set in South America. So I went through Goodreads for the past four years and realized that I got nothing SOLELY set in South America. I found these two on my shelves though, so I will have to rectify this soon.

tricours I'm equally bad, I think I've read one and I absolutely HATED it 😛 8y
RealLifeReading Yes I think many of us haven't read much set in S America! 8y

One thing I love about historical fiction is learning about people or places of which I previously had no knowledge like Paraguay. Very interesting read 📖
