Infused | Henrietta Lovell
Henrietta Lovell is best known as "The Rare Tea Lady". She is on a mission to revolutionize the way we drink tea by replacing industrially produced teabags with the highest quality tea leaves. Her quest has seen her travel to the Shire Highlands of Malawi, across the foothills of the Himalayas, and to hidden gardens in the Wuyi-Shan to source the world's most extraordinary teas. Infused invites us to discover these remarkable places, introducing us to the individual growers and household name chefs Lovell has met along the way - and reveals the true pleasures of tea. The result is a delicious infusion of travel writing, memoir, recipes, and glorious photography, all written with Lovell's unique charm and wit.

I already loved tea, but now have a whole new level of appreciation. Lovell‘s passion is infectious! I started this back in December and it turned out to be ideal for dipping in and out of during the cold winter months. Very cozy and comforting. I‘d recommend this not only to my fellow tea lovers, but to anyone who enjoys travel &/or food writing.

Aimeesue Lovely cover, too! 2y

“Together we huddled around warm cups of rescue and comfort…It made me think of the wagons bringing tea to bombed-out cities in the Second World War. If I ever have fortunes to blow, I‘d like to take tea to refugee camps. I‘d like to have a tea disaster-recovery unit, with special planes and equipment so we could be there, on the scene, giving out tea. Proper tea to make the heart glad, so that all is not lost when all seems lost.”

Lovely idea.

9 years ago, I clutched my tea mug for hours after getting a frantic early morning call from my brother on the east coast: our dad was being rushed to the ER after suffering a heart attack and his prognosis was not good. I cried and I waited and I drank tea. I‘ve always loved tea, but it has held a special place in my heart since that fateful morning.
Read this beautiful ode to tea if you: ⬇️

sarahbellum A tiny warning about the audio: the author narrates and, at certain points, is almost whispering. I found it to be distracting and made the prose in those sections a little purple. A small critique for an otherwise very enjoyable listen! 2y
mabell I can‘t imagine! 💔 What a testament to tea that you were able to find comfort in it. 2y

Three stars for the writing and an extra half-star for the recipes.

As a tea lover, I was intrigued by this book. The author, a true tea lady, is highly knowledgeable about tea. She travels the world searching for the perfect tea leaves and talks in depth about the farms she visits. She shares recipes for her favorite drinks. The author talks about her personal life and struggles she endured with cancer. She narrates the audiobook and it‘s excellent! Her voice is so calming and conveys her passion for tea.

Nute Oooh, this sounds interesting! I am a tea lover as well.🙂 Traveling the world in search of perfect tea leaves…I‘d like to know the stories behind those journeys. btw…the coloring of your lily is stunning. 3y

You need a good cup of tea while reading this book! It was so delightful and non fiction semi-bio is not usually my jam. There was a little history on tea, British blending and how to dry the different types of tea. She awakened tea life in me when it's been dormant for a bit and now I want to go spend my money on some really good loose leaf!

I burned through half of this audiobook today and I‘ll probably finish it tomorrow. Phew, such wonderful tea descriptions. Definitely going to purchase some of the teas mentioned when I finish.

Moony That sounds lovely. Perhaps it is also a book for @Silberloewe he likes tea, too. 4y

Has anyone tried her teas? Are they as good as they sound? I am so tempted by her descriptions.

LeahBergen Yes! I ordered some after I read this book. The Silver Tip Jasmine White tea is an absolute favourite and I HAD to try the Malawi Antlers White tea (it‘s very weird and very good). There is a little sample box you can buy and you get 10% off your first order when you sign up for her emails (they‘re not frequent and intrusive). Oh! And she always seems to offer worldwide free shipping around long weekends or holidays. 4y
SkeletonKey Uh oh, my tea supply is about to grow again. 4y
umbrellagirl @LeahBergen Those are the two I most wanted to try. The antlers sounded so interesting. 4y

I constantly wanted to be drinking tea while reading Henrietta Lovell‘s memoir / globetrotting travelogue. She is eloquent on the subject of her passion. She is also candid about her health challenges—battling cancer after divorce. Some sleepless nights, she‘s “a shivering weed in an abandoned asphalt tennis court.” I learned from Lovell to use slightly cooler water on my tea leaves and to shorten the steeping. Best morning tea now.

LeahBergen I really enjoyed this book (and I have even ordered some of her tea. The Malawi Antlers tea is so cool!) 4y
Cathythoughts Nice review 👍🏻❤️I know the water shouldn‘t be actually boiling for coffee. Is this her advise for tea too ? 4y
Lindy @Cathythoughts Lovell describes why different water temperatures are best for different types of loose tea. She has a good rant about why tea bags are bad, then acknowledges that they are the only form of tea that needs boiling hot water to extract flavour. 4y
Lindy @LeahBergen I think it was you that brought this book to my attention. Her teas sound very special. ☕️🌱❤️ 4y

In 18th-century London, tea was known as scandal water.
[Samuel Johnson]: “tea is a liquor not proper for the lower classes of the people, as it supplies no strength to labour, or relief to disease, but gratifies the taste without nourishing the body.”

Josee.lit.a.lu.et.lira Scandal Water 😅 4y
batsy That's really interesting considering the connotations of the phrase "spill the tea" i.e. getting the real story/gossip! 4y
Lindy @batsy Good point! I hadn‘t thought of that expression. 😊 4y
Lindy @Josee.a.lu.lit.et.lira Being an avid tea drinker, I find the label funny too. See @batsy ‘s comment above. 4y
Josee.lit.a.lu.et.lira @batsy 😮 totally. Great meaning connection! 4y

I could single out the rooibos, knowing that scent so particularly. It was like the violins soaring in a full orchestra of smell.

Centique That is a GLORIOUS bloom. I feel like I could smell it through the screen! 4y

Also in January, I've traveled with Henrietta Lovell, discovering tea farmers from all around the world.
While I enjoyed her passion for tea, it was sometimes overwhelming with information, and I wish it was organized chronologically or thematically.
I really liked the little recipes she gives along the book to prepare some of the teas, or to prepare tea cocktails ;)
