Stalingrad is the prequel to Life and Fate, one of the twentieth centurys greatest novels. This is its first publication in English. In April 1942, Hitler and Mussolini plan the huge offensive on the Eastern Front that will culminate in the greatest battle in human history. Hundreds of miles away, Pyotr Vavilov receives his call-up papers and spends a final night with his wife and children in the hut that is his home. As war approaches, the Shaposhnikov family gathers for a meal: despite her age, Alexandra will soon become a refugee; Tolya will enlist in the reserves; Vera, a nurse, will fall in love with a wounded pilot; and Viktor Shtrum will receive a letter from his doomed mother which will haunt him forever. The war will consume the lives of a huge cast of characters lives which express Grossmans grand themes of the nation and the individual, natures beauty and wars cruelty, love and separation. For months, Soviet forces are driven back inexorably by the German advance eastward and eventually Stalingrad is all that remains between the invaders and victory. The city stands on a cliff-top by the Volga river. The battle for Stalingrad a maelstrom of violence and firepower will reduce it to ruins. But it will also be the cradle of a new sense of hope. Stalingrad is a magnificent novel not only of war but of all human life: its subjects are mothers and daughters, husbands and brothers, generals, nurses, political officers, steelworkers, tractor girls. It is tender, epic, and a testament to the power of the human spirit.

Evefr Wow - I love that passage! We had a beautiful spring day today and it certainly helped to lift my spirits and make me thankful for the things of this world even amidst all of its cruel and inexplicable realities.☀️🌱🌷 4y

It's still pretty early in the year but quite a bit of 2020 reading so far has taken place and/or by writers from Eastern Europe/Russia. Not sure if this is intentional. And now I start this tome.

Back to school has hit our family like a ton of bricks. I‘ve watched Fleabag AND You - and I‘m not much of a TV gal and managed to get in 50 pages a week for the #chunksterchallenge2020. It‘s about half what I‘d hoped but half is so much better than none!

Amiable Excellent progress nonetheless! Great job! 4y

The older I get the more I‘m horribly daunted by chunksters. Even if it‘s a book I really want to read. On page 50 and it looks like this... 😱

Lindy 😱falling apart in chunks? Old glue? 4y
ljuliel Same here. I used to like books the thicker the better when young. Now, really thick ones sorta scare me off a bit. Not sure why. 4y

4⭐️ It took me 5 weeks to finish this doorstopper; the book cover has turned curly! I did get emotional experiencing the war with the characters, but I found that Grossman over-romanticized the good sides of humanity. Most of the characters are of good personalities, hard-working, and patriotic. Where are the bad guys? All for Nothing by Walter Kempowski is more realistic in picturing the mess that war brought to the people

Cathythoughts Great review! Well done .. that it‘s a big book 👍🏻❤️ 4y
sisilia 😃 Thanks, @Cathythoughts ! I was very patient, plowing through the pages 4y
Tamra I admire your patience! I have to wonder what drives the plot if there are no “bad” guys or at least ambivalent characters. (edited) 4y

sisilia @tamra How the war changed the civilians‘ lives, and also we followed the soldiers‘ journey marching to Stalingrad and all risked their lives there. No wonder this book could get published in Russia. I‘m curious about Life and Fate now; I want to know why it was banned 4y
Tamra @sisilia I get it, a glimpse in the life sort of book. That is curiosity re: ban! 4y
BarbaraBB Well done!! 4y
arubabookwoman I really want to get to that soon. I loved Life and Fate. I‘m stacking the Kemposki book, which I hadn‘t heard of. 4y

So my plan to finish off Stalingrad over the weekend has failed. I was distracted! There‘s a new season of Midnight Diner on Netflix, and my friend told me about The Morning Show on AppleTV🙃😅 I just had to watch it!

I‘m only 15% in, and I‘m in love with this book 🥰

I imagine all the male characters as Jude Law, Joseph Fiennes, and Ed Harris. The ladies are Rachel Weisz and her derivatives. How‘s that for a compelling story? ❤️

Cathythoughts 👍🏻♥️♥️ 5y

It‘s going to take me ages to finish this book, not that I‘m not enjoying it. I‘m facing two major problems now:
1. The Russian names! I have limited memory bytes and it is truly a struggle here 😅 I‘m writing them down and it helps a bit
2. This book smells so good I keep stopping to sniff it 🙈I have book sniffing addiction! 🐽🐽🐽

Wish me luck!

Cathythoughts Good luck 👍🏻♥️sounds great... look forward to your review & might even be tempted ...( . I‘m always writing names down .. I‘ve a terrible memory ) 5y
Leftcoastzen Yay book sniffing!I think there should be a rule that Russian books have a list of all the names , many do . 5y

sisilia @Leftcoastzen Oh it has a list at the back... but not in chronological order, so I‘ll keep it for later when most of the characters are introduced 5y
JulietReads 🤣 Someone needs to set up a BSA (Book Sniffers Anonymous) convention. 📖👃 5y
Leftcoastzen Oh good! I can understand you setting it up your way , makes sense. 5y
arubabookwoman I bought that when it first came out but haven‘t gotten to it yet. I loved Life and Fate, also very long. 5y
sisilia @JulietBooks Hahaha that‘s a good idea 😆 5y

Intimidating... but my curiosity wins 😆

sisilia I have not @Leftcoastzen ☺️ The plan is to read Stalingraad first, and hopefully Life and Fate soon after. I heard that the latter is life changing. My life won‘t be the same after I read these two 😆 5y
Leftcoastzen I feel bad that I have not read Stalingrad. When I read Life and Fate , Stalingrad had not been translated yet. I would have preferred to read them in order. 5y
sisilia Aww it‘s never too late @Leftcoastzen It‘s the same translator (Robert Chandler) as the one who worked on Life and Fate; and he said that he did it better with Stalingrad 5y
Leftcoastzen Good to know ,I definitely need to get to it. 5y

Immediate TBR stack. Those on the right are books I read this year

Leftcoastzen Life and fate was incredible! 5y
sisilia @tamra Have you read “Augustus” and “Nothing but the Night”? 5y
See All 12 Comments
sisilia @Leftcoastzen ❤️ I hope I do the right thing by reading Stalingrad first 🤞🏻 Keeping the best for last 😀 5y
Tamra @sisilia I haven‘t. I‘m glad you mentioned them because I had forgotten! I already have “Night” on my Kindle and it got buried. “Augustus” I wouldn‘t have been attracted to before I took my antiquity lit course, but now I am. Thank you for asking! 5y
Tamra @sisilia beware “Night” has a super creepy cover. 😮 5y
Tamra I just borrowed the audio version of Augustus. 😁 5y
LeahBergen The top 3 are on my TBR, too. 👍🏻 5y
arubabookwoman I loved Life and Fate, and preordered Stalingrad for my Kindle on the strength of that. It‘s been a while, but I haven‘t gotten to it yet. Soon..... 5y
sisilia @Tamra Oh yes, the eyes on the cover 😱 John Williams is too good to ignore. After Stoner, I‘m determined to read all of his novels. Thankfully, he only wrote four. If he were Georges Simenon, I‘d die and go bankrupt 😅 5y
sisilia @LeahBergen Yay! 🙌🏻 5y
sisilia @arubabookwoman I‘m so glad that I hear more and more people loving Life and Fate. I heard that Stalingrad has less impact but is similarly awesome 5y
