1984 & Animal Farm
1984 & Animal Farm | George Orwell
14 posts | 41 read | 2 reading | 8 to read
Two of the greatest and most influential works of the twentieth century, together in one edition: 1984, with an introduction by Charlotte Wood, and Animal Farm, with an introduction by Don Watson. George Orwells novels about the dangers of tyranny, the corruption of the state and the enslavement of the individual are essential reading. In an era of doublespeak, they remain chillingly prophetic. George Orwell, born Eric Arthur Blair (19031950), was a teacher, novelist and journalist. He also served his country including in the Home Guard during the Second World War. He later became the literary editor of the Tribune and wrote for the Observer and Manchester Evening News. The author of nine books, Orwell is best known for the allegorical Animal Farm (1945) and dystopian satire 1984 (1949). They have gone on the become two of the most influential books of the twentieth century. There are no replacements for George Orwell, just as there are no replacements for a Bernard Shaw or a Mark Twain...he pricked, provoked and badgered lazy minds, delighted those who enjoyed watching an original intelligence at work. These two stories were good but also scary how easy it seems to come to that state. Definitely feel like we should be learning from these stories and not letting hate control people. All in all very good

Haven‘t posted in a week cuz I had such a book hangover from Michelle Obama‘s Becoming. Now it‘s time to reset and do a bit of reading while it‘s raining outside

After listening to an episode of the #BunnyEars #Podcast, I was inspired to read #AnimalFarm. I don‘t think it was one of my required reads when I was in high school, but I am sure at the time I wouldn‘t have read it anyway. I am eight chapters in and really enjoying it. I can also say that I would have appreciated it as much back then as I do now.

I had read Animal Farm before, but this was my first time for 1984. I loved 80% of 1984, only so-so on the last 20%. But over-all I'm glad I read them. Now I need something cheerier for sure though.

Look what I ordered from Etsy. I can't wait for it to get here. It's $22 if you are thinking about getting one. I'm not affiliated with the store in anyway, just a customer.

Alfoster Very cool! What is the company name on Etsy? 8y

This came to mind when I heard Trump‘s speech from Hershey today. What he had said in the speech was "We will have peace in strength”
