Diamond Doris
Diamond Doris: The Sensational True Story of the Worlds Most Notorious International Jewel Thief | Doris Payne
7 posts | 7 read | 21 to read
In the ebullient spirit of Oceans 8, The Heist, and Thelma & Louise, a sensational and entertaining memoir of the worlds most notorious jewel thiefa woman who defied societys prejudices and norms to carve her own path, stealing from elite jewelers to live her dreams. Growing up during the Depression in the segregated coal town of Slab Fork, West Virginia, Doris Payne was told her dreams were unattainable for poor black girls like her. Surrounded by people who sought to limit her potential, Doris vowed to turn the tables after the owner of a jewelry store threw her out when a white customer arrived. Neither racism nor poverty would hold her back; she would get what she wanted and help her mother escape an abusive relationship. Using her southern charm, quick wit, and fascination with magic as her tools, Payne began shoplifting small pieces of jewelry from local stores. Over the course of six decades, her talents grew with each heist. Becoming an expert world-class jewel thief, she daringly pulled off numerous diamond robberies and her Jewish boyfriend fenced the stolen gems to Hollywood celebrities. Doriss criminal exploits went unsolved well into the 1970spartly because the stores did not want to admit that they were duped by a black woman. Eventually realizing Doris was using him, her boyfriend turned her in. She was arrested after stealing a diamond ring in Monte Carlo that was valued at more than half a million dollars. But even prison couldnt contain this larger-than-life personality who cleverly used nuns as well as various ruses to help her break out. With her arrest in 2013 in San Diego, Doriss fame skyrocketed when media coverage of her astonishing escapades exploded. Today, at eighty-seven, Doris, as bold and vibrant as ever, lives in Atlanta, and is celebrated for her glamorous legacy. She sums up her adventurous career best: It beat being a teacher or a maid. A rip-roaringly fun and exciting story as captivating and audacious as Catch Me if You Can and Can You Ever Forgive Me?Diamond Doris is the portrait of a captivating anti-hero who refused to be defined by the prejudices and mores of a hypocritical society. Diamond Doris features 20-30 color photographs.

This was like a real life, one woman Ocean‘s 11. It‘s a short book, telling Diamond Doris‘s story. She‘s pretty unapologetic about what she calls her career, stealing jewelry that would be worth millions today. Some of the book may be embellished but it was a fun true crime story.

WHAT??? An 80 + year old granny, lighting up a joint reminiscing about her incredible life of crime. This story will blow your mind, however it will also leave you bewildered. Do we root for Doris, a scrappy 8 year old raised in abject poverty or do we condone Doris an 88 year old narcissist, who showed no remorse for the decades of thefts she committed? Talk about CHUTZPAH - Doris has a mouth like a drunken sailor & a set of brass b@lls👇🏽

Cinfhen This is a wild ride and narrator Robin Miles really brings Doris to life. A quick read which will make one hell of a movie 🍿 3y

#pop21 #aGemMineralOrRockInTitle #NF #Audio #Hoopla Robin Miles is such a great narrator and Doris Payne is one spunky lady, although she‘s legitimately a thief “Just because you give something a different name doesn‘t mean it‘s something different.” So far I‘m enjoying this audacious story. Have you listened to this one @Megabooks @Reviewsbylola

Megabooks No not yet. 3y
Hooked_on_books LOVE Robin Miles! She‘s one of my favorite audio readers. 3y
Reviewsbylola No, this one is unfamiliar to me! 3y

Cinfhen I think you‘d LOVE this @Reviewsbylola and Doris lives in Cleveland, so she‘s a hometown girl 😉 3y
Cinfhen Robin Miles is EXCELLENT @Hooked_on_books it‘s funny/ I‘m now becoming a narrator fan girl 🥰 3y
Hooked_on_books It‘s easy to do! I initially didn‘t pay much attention to narrator‘s when I was starting into audiobooks, circa 2016, but now, yes! I haven‘t developed any strong narrator dislikes, but there are certain narrators that can get me to try a book if I‘m wavering. 3y
Cinfhen EXACTLY @Hooked_on_books who are some of your favorites??? 3y
Hooked_on_books Other than Robin, I‘m a fan of Bahni Turpin (do I even need to say that?), Nancy Wu, Dion Graham 😍, plus Dominic Hoffman and Nicole Lewis are becoming favorites. How about you? 3y
Cinfhen Marin Ireland, Julia Whelan, January Lavoy, Imogen Church of course Bahni & Dion and I like Michael Beck for a white southern male accent. I‘m sure there are more I‘m forgetting/ @Hooked_on_books

Cinfhen Im not familiar with Nicole Lewis or Nancy Wu @Hooked_on_books 3y
Hooked_on_books Nicole Lewis has done A Space Between Worlds, Such a Fun Age, A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor, Office of Historical Corrections. And Nancy Wu did Severance and The Iron Will of Genie Lo plus many more I haven‘t listened to as they aren‘t quite my preferred genre (a fair amount of fantasy like Warcross). 3y
Cinfhen I haven‘t listened to ANY of those books @Hooked_on_books but I looked on Audible and I have listened to both narrators @Hooked_on_books 3y

This was a wild book detailing Doris Payne‘s life as a jewelry thief over many decades beginning in the 1950s. She stole extremely expensive pieces of jewelry from high end jewelry stores all over the world and while I don‘t condone her crimes it was a guilty pleasure to read about them. It looks like this is going to be made into a movie and seems like a story that will lend itself well to the big screen.

I had a few spare moments this weekend to wander the nearby bookstore, and found a few newer books that caught my eye! #TBRtemptation

I usually don‘t go for books like the 💎 Doris one, but we happened to have shopped at the Charlotte David Yurman store the same week she stole a $33,000 💍 in 2015. 😲 It‘s a weird coincidence, so I‘m intrigued by the book.

MsLeah8417 I‘ve heard nothing but good things about Diamond Doris...Amistad Press has some great books coming out (edited) 5y
alisiakae @MsLeah8417 Good to know! 5y
