Between Two Thorns
Between Two Thorns: The Split Worlds - Book One | Emma Newman
13 posts | 11 read | 22 to read
Beautiful and nuanced as it is dangerous, the manners of Regency and Victorian England blend into a scintillating fusion of urban fantasy and court intrigue. Between Mundanus, the world of humans, and Exilium, the world of the Fae, lies the Nether, a mirror-world where the social structure of 19th-century England is preserved by Fae-touched families who remain loyal to their ageless masters. Born into this world is Catherine Rhoeas-Papaver, who escapes it all to live a normal life in Mundanus, free from her parents and the strictures of Fae-touched society. But now shes being dragged back to face an arranged marriage, along with all the high society trappings it entails. Crossing paths with Cathy is Max, an Arbiter of the Split Worlds treaty with a dislocated soul who polices the boundaries between the worlds, keeping innocents safe from the Fae. After a spree of kidnappings and the murder of his fellow Arbiters, Max is forced to enlist Cathys help in unravelling a high-profile disappearance within the Nether. Getting involved in the machinations of the Fae, however, may prove fatal to all involved. BETWEEN TWO THORNS shows the darkness beneath the glamour of the social Season. Learning to be a young lady has never seemed so dangerous.Mary Robinette Kowal, Hugo Award-winning fantasy author Emma Newman is an extraordinary new voice in SF/F.Paul Cornell, Hugo Award winner and author of LONDON FALLING and SAUCER COUNTRY

This is a cute fantasy. It's set in Bath. But it's fantasy and most of the action takes place in the in between so maybe not the Bath research I was pretending to look for. It's a series. I may not read the next one tbh. Low pick.

This was okay. Nothing mind blowing. I like her novella series a lot more.

Cathy and Max both had interesting stories. Loved how they paralleled and intersected. World building was interesting, imaginative, and well-executed. Looks like a promising series to read.

I would love to live in the Ether. Not with the Fae touched families but with a Sorcerer. The treatment of women in this world is appalling.

If you like the Shades of Magic series then you should read the Spilt Worlds. It's full of magic, Fae, manners, tea and feminism.

It's a rare day when I can actually shut work down at 5:30, but this is my ideal: peanut butter cup, a cuppa, and a book 😊

Between Barnes & Noble and Thriftbooks, a lot of books came home this week. And between novel research and two college classes, I have to read ALMOST ALL OF THIS by December. #NoSleepTilBookland

LeahBergen There are some great ones in that stack. You got this. 👍🏼 8y
LectricSheep What does the encyclopedia of mystical and paranormal experience look like? It sounds interesting! Especially for October. :D 8y
Peterdamien @LectricSheep it's so odd. It's a proper, sober encyclopedia, calmly exploring in tremendous detail all manner of odd stuff. From "lucid dreams" to "drugs" to "false face society"...and that's just me flipping at random just now. VERY October indeed :) 8y
LectricSheep @Peterdamien very cool! There are a ton of inexpensive copies online-- I might have to pick up a copy! What a great coffee table book-- I mean, depending on your taste in coffee table books. :) 8y

Reading buddies. First book was super, looking forward to the next. I just hope it's at home in Vegas and not floating around up here or I'm gonna be mad when I drive home ):

I have zero impulse control at the bookstore, especially when I turn and says to myself, "Self. I want this."

"No."
"But Self," I explain reasonably. "It looks neat."
"No!"
"EXECUTIVE DECISION IS GO, THANKS SELF!"
"Motherfu..."

Zelma Beautiful covers. 8y
mahasoor yes! aren't they? they made me think of Mike Shevdon's "court of the feyre" urban fantasy book covers. I love how each book, the color contrast is as vivid and grabbing (for me anyway! ^.^) as the next 8y
mahasoor *I love how, for each book, the color contrast is as... hurr. I was too excited to pay attention to what I was doing. talk about books omg yay! 😹 8y
